This week, Rex Chapman is talking about the great Dr. Jerry Buss! Dr. Buss bought the Lakers in 1979 and turned them into one of the most exciting franchises in professional sports. We couldn't think of anyone better to talk about Dr. Buss than his daughter and current owner of the Lakers, Jeanie Buss! We talk about Jerry buying the Lakers, his love of nightclubs, and how he brought Showtime to LA and, eventually, the entire NBA!

Welcome to OWNED! A podcast, hosted by Rex Chapman, about the wild world of professional sports team ownership. For our first episode we thought we'd bring you an uplifting story (they're not always like that...) about an actor from Australia who made some money in America, and decided to use some of it to save his childhood Rugby team from....Rupert Murdoch? It gets better though, we're not just talking about Russell Crowe, we're talking TO Russell Crowe.

In our final episode, we launch our campaign to get James Dolan to sell the Knicks. But what can we offer the billionaire who has everything?
From elderly computer hackers to riled up law students, fans have been trying to get Dolan to sell the team for pretty much as long as he’s owned it. These efforts have only succeeded in making Dolan more grumpy.
But today, Dolan is pissing off the politicians who regulate him, and pissing away billions on a new venue in Vegas. Maybe he’s feeling the pinch. Or maybe he’s finally ready to make a real commitment to his music career. Is the time finally right to get Dolan to sell the team?

Just as the Knicks start to gain some respectability on the court, Dolan finds a new way to squander any possible goodwill. He orders Garden security to use facial recognition to ban thousands of fans.
But this dystopian technology is actually just the latest example of decades of strong arm tactics. The Dolan security state fights beloved players…as well as fans, celebrities, and the Girl Scouts. It’s an all out effort to protect Jim’s ego. And the tactics get ugly enough to put Dolan on the radar of New York’s Attorney General.

James Dolan finally finds someone to blame for the Knicks losing ways…the media!
After Knicks players give a reporter a story that angers a huge segment of the fan base, Dolan starts an all out war with the press that drags on for decades. Reporters are tailed by security, spied on by PR minders, and sometimes banned from asking player’s questions. But, in a twist, JD let’s one lucky journalist backstage with his band, and into his heart.

After a string of disastrous seasons, James Dolan brings in Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas to help fix the Knicks. With Thomas as president, the franchise continues to flounder. And instead of firing his chief basketball guy, Dolan doubles down on the Isiah Experience, and makes Thomas the head coach as well.
When Dolan and Thomas decide to fight a sexual harassment lawsuit, the heavily publicized trial drags the Knicks’ reputation to new lows.

Long before James Dolan became the most hated owner in sports, he was just a kid from Long Island who wanted to rock with his band. At first young Jim rebels against his billionaire father, but he finally joins the family’s cable television empire.
After years climbing the ranks (and a trip to rehab), Jim gets a new assignment from his dad: running the New York Knicks. He quickly takes centerstage at Madison Square Garden—and begins his infamous reign of error.

Buckle up for a wild trip behind the scenes of one of the most exclusive clubs on earth: the world of professional sports owners. A mix of comedy, tragedy, and everything in between, OWNED is the first podcast ever to take listeners way above the court or field into the luxury boxes where billionaires roam. Each week, former NBA player (and current Twitter all-star) Rex Chapman is joined by a cast of reporters, athletes, and comedians to dissect the politics, scandals, and scores of these eccentric moguls who hold our hopes and dreams in their hands. It is fun, funny, dynamic, surprising, and based on incredible stories; a hybrid talk show that combines the wit and flair of SmartLess with the reporting, storytelling, and production muscle of Campside Media, creators of hit shows like Chameleon: Wild Boys, and Suspect.
