The Padres got 3 consecutive hits to start the game- and didn’t score- before Dylan Cease walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the 1st, and the Dodgers made him pay. scoring 3 runs (and 2 more in the bottom of the 2nd) in a 6-0 win that puts them back into sole possession of 1st place in the National League West.

Cease, who had put together back-to-back outstanding starts coming into tonight, walked 6 hitters in 3 1/3, and gave up just 2 hits. Jackson Merrill didn’t help him any, dropping an easy fly ball in centerfield that allowed 2 runs to score.

Teoscar Hernandez hit a solo homer in the 5th off David Morgan to finish the scoring for LA.

The Padres ran themselves out of 2 innings tonight, allowing Dodgers’ catcher Will Smith to throw out 3 runners attempting to steal in the same game, a career-high.

The Dodgers are now 7-2 against the Padres the season, 5-1 at home.
