Fernando Tatis Jr. scored the go-ahead run in a wild pitch in the top of the 9th inning, and Robert Suarez slammed the door shut in the bottom half 

Tatis doubled to lead off the top of the 9th, stole 3rd base, (#8) then scored on a slider in the dirt from Pirates Closer David Bednar to put the Pads ahead for good.

Suarez pitched the 9th to pick up his 13th save of the season. Jason Adam (3-0) pitched a perfect 8th to earn the win.


Manny Machado ripped a line drive home run (his 3rd) in the 7th inning to tie the game at a run apiece and make it a battle of the late-inning bullpen guys, and that’s where the Padres have their biggest advantage most teams, with Adam & Suarez.

Yuki Matsui and Andrew Jacob each threw a scoreless inning in relief of starter Randy Vasquez to help the Pads get to Adam and Suarez.

Vasquez gave up just a run on 6 hits while walking 5 in 5 innings. The crafty right-hander kept making the big pitches to get the big outs when he needed them, especially in the 5th Inning when he struck out Alexander Canario to leave the bases loaded after a visit from pitching coach Ruben Niebl.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning on O’Neil Cruz’s RBI single.
