The San Diego Padres’ bullpen- more specifically the four horsemen- tossed 4 2/3 innings of 2-hit, scoreless relief in back of starter Randy Vasquez, and the Pads won for the 6th time in their last 8 games with a 2-1 squeaker over the Marlins in Miami.

Robert Suarez worked the 9th to pick up his MLB-leading 29th save, Jason Adam pitched the 8th, Jeremiah Estrada worked a perfect 7th, and Adrian Morejon gave them 1 2/3 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts.

The Pads’ bullpen leads the major leagues with 44 saves. The  are 44 and three when leading after eight innings. They have won 22 1-run games, 2nd in MLB.

Jackson Merrill’s RBI single and Martin Maldonado’s RBI double- both in the 2nd inning off Miami starter Eury Perez- gave the Padres all the runs they would need.

Merrill singled in Xander Bogarts, who had led off with a double and went to 3rd on a wild pitch. Maldonado doubled in Merrill, who scored on a sweet head-1st slide.

Vasquez (4 1/3 innings, 7 hits, 1 earned run) and the bullpen (4 2/3 innings, 2 hits) took care of the rest.

Miami left-fielder Kyle Stowers, who I’ve been talking about all year as a potential trade target for the Padres, hit a solo home run. The SoCal native is hitting .295 with 22 homers & 60 RBI’s.

Bogaerts continues to be hot. The San Diego shortstop is slashing .321/.410/.434 in his last 15 games.
