Pinch-hitter Gavin Sheets’ game-tying home run kickstarted the Padres’ four-run rally in the 7th inning after the San Diego bullpen went 6 straight scoreless innings to close the game and beat the Atlanta Braves 7-4 on opening day.
 

Jackson Merrill drove in four runs, Fernando Tatís Jr. had three hits, Luis Arraez and Manny Machado added seventh-inning RBI singles, and the Padres roughed up 2024 Cy Young Award winner Chris Sale for 3 runs on 6 hits over 5 innings.
 

Ozzie Albeis hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs for the Braves. Austin Riley also homered for Atlanta.
 

Michael King couldn't escape the 3rd inning for the Padres, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks.
 

Tatís and Machado scored on Merrill’s 1st-inning single. Pinch-runner Jason Hayward scored the go-ahead run on Luis Arraez's sac fly 3 batters after Sheets' HR.
 

Machado then drove in Tatís with a double, stole 3rd and scored on Merrill's short flyout.
 

Padres’ Closer Robert Suarez made it interesting in the 9th- allowing 2 baserunners before securing the save.
 

Sheets connected off Héctor Neris (0-1) after San Diego had managed just 1 baserunner in the previous 3 innings. Sheets surprisingly made San Diego's roster after signing a minor-league deal last month, and crushing home runs all over Arizona in Cactus League play.
