In early June 1967, reality in the Middle East changed drastically. Following increased tensions on the borders of Israel and its neighbors and the closing of the Straits of Tiran by Egypt's President Nasser, Israel executed a preemptive strike on Egypt, sparking the infamous Six Day War. When the dust settled and the sun set on the region upon the signing of the ceasefire agreement, Israel more than doubled its size by way of seizing the Golan Heights, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula. The region had undergone major changes in a very short amount of time, leaving the Arab nations surrounding Israel kneeling at the boots of their enemy. It is at this moment in history when occupation began in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip; an occupation that remains to this day. Israel solidified its control over the Palestinian people and still has yet to relax its grip. These six days at the beginning of June 1967, will continue to loom over Palestine until the military occupation of the territories seizes to exist. The outside world knows this conflict as the Six Day War; Palestine knows it as an-Naksa, the Setback.
