  • Chain Reaction Barfing / Songs To Kill Yourself To — Episode 557
Minus the barfing dog, I've lived through this experience.

Josh Bard of The Prompt Magazine swings by the studio in what turns out to be a celebration of the 1991 cinematic tour de force Problem Child 2 and its climactic scene - a sped-up carnival ride triggering a chain reaction of vomiting. Horribly enough, I experienced something similar in my childhood, which I dutifully share to the delight and disgust of the rest of the room.

But that's just a prelude to the episode's money shot - a list from each person in studio of the top three the songs they could come up with to kill themselves to. Morbid as all hell, but I defy you to listen and not come up with your own top three (which you should absolutely let us know about via Facebook, Twitter or email so we can mention your list on the next episode).

  • White Thoughts On Black Panther — Papa’s Basement 556
    ;)

The post title is mildly inflammatory for the clicks, but I am white and I did see Black Panther, so it works. Though it's a struggle to list the show topics for these stupid descriptions because so much of what we do is talk about each other regarding whatever springs to mind in the moment, two of Netflix's recent offerings, Everything Sucks! and an indie darling by the name of Goodfellas also get extensive coverage. Just listen and enjoy. If you want comedy, it's here.

  • RIP Frasier’s Dad — Papa’s Basement 555
Martin: I call him "Eddie Spaghetti".Daphne: Oh, he likes pasta?Martin: No, he has worms.

Forgive me taking forever to upload: I've been depressed lately which, combined with Netflix adding Goodfellas to its roster, has led to a week of sleeping, overeating and watching the best movie ever made (if you debate this, kill yourself now) three times a day.

This episode was recorded in the wake of the Eagles' Super Bowl victory, which left me in a fantastic mood. Not only did they vanquish Tom Brady and the Patriots, but the win rested squarely on the shoulders Nick Foles, a man who almost left the NFL due to circumstances beyond his control and wound up the Super Bowl MVP. We tell Foles's story of triumph, and you can practically hear the theme from Rocky in the background as we do.

We close the episode with another story that will make you feel you can change your crappy, half-lived life: That of John Mahoney, the actor who played Martin Crane on the show Frasier, who passed away a few weeks ago. Mahoney got into acting at 37 in one of gutsier life-moves I've heard of. We celebrate him and his stones on the latest Papa's Basement Podcast. (Oh, and please listen to this interview he did with Fresh Air's Terry Gross. Whether you're happy with where you are in life or you are looking to make a seismic change, it's 20 minutes that will leave you a whole lot better than you were before you heard it.)

  • The Secret Of Groundhog Day — Papa’s Basement 554
Which face will you be making by the end of this episode: Murray's or the groundhog's?

It is (was) Groundhog Day, meaning this episode is filled with all sorts of references to everybody's existential comedy...and the disclosure of a deep, dark secret held by both Pete Maybe and myself that threatens to turn you, the listener, against us like nothing else we have revealed before. We're laying it all on the line, people, and trusting you to love and accept us, even after you learn...the secret of Groundhog Day.

  • Stinker Lets Loose — Papa’s Basement 553
A chimpanzee driving a truck. Mike Sacks knows how to give America what it wants.

Before we start the episode summary, friend of the show (who's slumming hard by being cool with us), author Mike Sacks, has released an audiobook version of his latest masterwork, Stinker Lets Loose, featuring an all-star cast of Jon Hamm, Andy Richter, Paul F. Tompkins and countless others. The tale of a trucker tasked with bringing a six pack of beer to the President Jimmy Carter, Stinker pays comedic homage to the 70s-era CB radio cross-country capers of yore. It's available now over at Audible, and you can download it for zilch after trying the service for free.

Since that was a lot of typing, I'm going to keep the rest of the episode summary brief: Why Tom Brady and the dominance of the Patriots is the most un-American thing I can think of, what it is that made Tide Pods of all things look so much more delicious than all of the other delicious-looking poisons in your kitchen cabinet (this is an honest question if you think about it) and me asking my fellow crew if something I did over the weekend involving an ex and a car was creepy or not. Don't miss it!

  • This Is Why You’re Wrong About Aziz — Papa’s Basement 552
The real victims in all of this are us for having to imagine Aziz Ansari have sex.

I read an article about how to craft catchier post titles, so enjoy the result of that. We do talk the Aziz Ansari case, though (if you're unfamiliar, listen to the episode and, behold, you're all caught up), and I tell a story from my personal life in a semi-similar situation (minus the mouth-fingering) that I'd like to think will provide food for thought.

There's also the croaking of Cranberries singer Dolores O'Riordan adding to the cavalcade of "people from my childhood who are dead" and discussing maybe the first thing President Trump has done that I'm proud of: raw dogging porn star Stormy Daniels.

  • My Magical (Wink Wink) New Year’s Eve — Papa’s Basement 551
I'll be honest, I've done this damn show for ten years. I've probably used this photo before. If not, yay!

An abridged show filled with twice the laughs (go go power of suggestion!). I spill the beans on a crazy thing I did to spice up my New Year's Eve, and the rest of the guys in studio (including longtime former radio friend Ajay Atayee) talk about their nights as well. Plus, I make the case that Richmond, VA is heaven on earth (and that, conversely, Northern Virginia is pure hell).

  • Brandon Jones’s Parents Are Mighty Racist — Papa’s Basement 550
Brandon Jones's Uncle Clayton has a bit of a past on him, too.

The Internet's feel-good story of the week, bullied Brandon Jones being embraced by the online community, took its inevitable nosedive when it was revealed Brandon's parents had white power ties. We give you the details that have come to light because, if we can't celebrate the 48-hour rise and fall of a poor, scarred kid, what's this show for, anyhow? We also mention our homeland, Northern VA, landing on the national news map for a second week in a row due to a man freaking out in traffic, stripping naked and assaulting vehicles, dick flappin' in the breeze. And a dying Japanese businessman has an end-of-life party for his friends, begging the question (which we answer) of what YOUR death party would consist of?

  • RIP, August Ames — Papa’s Basement 549
Why, God? There are so many people out there that are unattractive and/or don't have sex on camera for my viewing delight. Why August Ames? F Victoria's Secret: She was a true angel.

Mere days after being harassed on Twitter for a Tweet that some people deemed homophobic, August Ames, a young, beautiful adult star, took her own life. It's a tragedy on countless levels, all of which we explore on the latest episode of the Papa's Basement Show. On top of that, we tackle a tragedy of almost equal magnitude, the installation of tolls on Interstate 66 in Northern Virginia. And we cap things off with a review of Jim Carrey's new Netflix feature, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, where he discusses pretty much going insane on the set of Man on the Moon.

  • The Prodigal Lingebach Returns — Podcast Episode 548
Just two men working it out.

Fans of the show are well aware of the saga that played out with Chris Lingebach a few months ago (you can catch up with everything here). Well, comedian Brendan Cooney, a mutual friend, snuck Chris in studio for an attempt at on-air reconciliation. What follows is 90 minutes of two men that will either kill each other or kiss. Enjoy.
