Addys Castillo, MS is a juvenile/criminal justice practitioner with over 20 years of comprehensive experience as a public administrator working for vulnerable populations. She has worked with numerous State agencies and non-profits.  Addys is most passionate about working towards creating sustainable systems that improve outcomes for children and build community trust. As the Executive Director of the Citywide Youth Coalition, Inc. in New Haven, CT, she organizes and convenes youth, community members, and youth-serving organizations towards building a youth-led grassroots activism that will result in systems reform as it impacts young people’s ability to succeed.  Addys is a trainer in training with the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond, and is an anti-racist organizer in the city of New Haven. Addys a National Urban Fellow and holds a Bachelor’s of Arts in Sociology from Central Connecticut State University; a Masters of Science in Criminal Justice and Professional Certificate in Forensic Psychology from the University of New Haven; along with a Masters of Public Administration from the City of New York Baruch College’s School of Public Affairs.

Los Beneficios de la Terapia Emocional Enfocada para Parejas y Matrimonios.

En este episodio, le hablare de los beneficios de la Terapia Emocional Enfocada (EFT) por sus siglas en Ingles. Los estudios demuestran que las parejas que optan por esta forma de tratamiento mejoran en un 90%, 70-73% producen un cambio de un estado disfuncional a un estado funcional incluso después de haber terminado tratamiento, los resultados también indican que el 60% de parejas mantienen lo que han ganado u obtenido en terapia o simplemente siguen en sus relaciones hacia delante.

In this episode, we invited Aviva Rizel, LMFT who speaks to us about the benefits of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in treating and helping couples. EFT was developed primarily by Dr. Susan Johnson back in the 80s. Its primary roots come from experiential, person-centered, systemic and attachment theory.

Research outcomes demonstrate that couples that undergo this form of treatment have 90% of significant improvement, 70-73% rate of shifting from distress to recovery, even after treatment has concluded, results show that 60% maintain gains or simply continue to move.

In trying to connect, distressed couples get caught in negative repetitive sequences of interaction expressing secondary emotions rather than primary emotions.

In this episode, Mayra and I introduced you to the Ramos’ family who shared with us their story of pain due to being threatened with a deportation order involving Mr. Ramos.

Native from Ecuador, Mr. and Mrs. Ramos, parents to their children, Jason and Eric, United States Citizens, fight a battle to stay in this country where they’ve lived for over 20 years, have raised their children here, and have contributed to their community by being responsible members.

Here in this episode, we’ll give you the Ramos children's version and the impact caused by the persecution of immigration authorities towards vulnerable families such as the Ramos despite having no criminal records.  Integrated Bilingual Counseling thanks this family for sharing their story, allow themselves be vulnerable in public with the only intention to create awareness in our communities and provide support to other families that are struggling with the nightmare of deportations.

In this episode recorded in Spanish only, Mayra and I invited Dr. Michelle Silva, Psy.D., who is the Associate Director of the Connecticut Latino Behavioral Health System and has worked extensively with the Latino population in CT. She enlightened us about the POST SOCIO-EMOTIONAL EFFECTS OF IMMIGRATION here in the USA. To name some:

Loss of natural supports: immigrants, leave behind their families in the pursuit of better days.

Loss of identity: once arrived, the cultural shock and the questioning of one’s role in the foreign country.

Loss of social status: most of the time, a modus vivendi in a country of origin, is sacrificed once arrived in the USA.

Uncertainty: starting from zero in a foreign country, and leaving everything behind, creates a lot of uncertainty and when homeostasis is not reached, conditions such as depression and anxiety are among the most common.

PTSD: for many immigrants, leaving their country of origin is the only alternative given their circumstances of violence that include gangs, organized crime, drug cartels, human trafficking, etc. For some experiencing PTSD symptoms is part of their baggage and is exacerbated during the process of immigrating to a foreign country due to the experience of walking for days or nights with limited support and risking their lives or even worse by being victims of further violence during their journey.
