Gloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute (PCI) and author of Parenting Well in a Media Age, talks with Gregg and Nicole, parents of two boys, ages ten and eight.

Gregg and Nicole got a surprise over the past six months as they saw their sons growing dependency on playing video games—and then having major meltdowns when told to stop playing. The tantrums and anger afterwards along with their totally preoccupation with playing the video games any chance they could get started driving Gregg and Nicole nuts. Fun times and harmony as a family were getting harder and harder to achieve. And along with those concerns came another one. Gregg and Nicole found out that Minecraft is not only addictive for playing non-violent fun games, but also Minecraft gives their sons access to The Hunger Games video game—a game modeled after the book and the movie and one Gregg and Nicole doesn’t want their sons to play. “This has got to stop,” they said to themselves and to each other.

In this podcast we discuss the impact of the video games on the boys’ attitudes and behaviors in light of child development. The brains of young children are fragile and are much more easily conditioned to wanting to play these games. It is no surprise that they have been affected in this way. With more understanding about Brain-Compatible Parenting, Gregg and Nicole were able to develop a plan to implement for the next 3-4 weeks. Tune in to find out the specifics of their daring plan. Then check back in a month for an update to see how things are going.
