Common Core-Aligned and Other SEL Curricula

Because SEL is so prevalent in the Common Core standards, it is similarly infused into Common Core-aligned curricula. Many such curricula emphasize not just the SEL of identifying and controlling one’s own emotions, but the more political SEL of learning how to manipulate others’ emotions to achieve a goal. One example is the first-grade English Language Arts curriculum, Voices, approved for use with the Common Core in Utah:

“In the Voices Democracy theme, students use their voices to advocate solutions to social problems that they care deeply about [assuming that six-year-olds “care deeply” about social issues]. They are involved in learning the following theme related social knowledge and skills: social role models, social advocacy, and respect for each other” (emphasis added).

“Tell students when they write a call to action, they should include emotional words to get readers to feel so strongly about a problem that they want to do what is being asked of them” (emphasis added).

This curriculum goes far beyond helping first-graders get along with their peers and delves into political manipulation. It’s never too early, apparently, to use SEL to create little community organizers.

An Education Week article discussed how SEL is being infused into academic subjects to motivate students toward political action. Given that this article was published in 2017, presumably these lessons are aligned to the Common Core standards for use in most public-school classrooms. SEL proponents enthuse that “[a] reading or math lesson can teach students to see their personal challenges as part  of  a wider struggle, where people work together to bring about change, what these teachers call social justice.”

A noteworthy example is an online math course used in high school:

It’s that sense of control that math teacher Kelly Boles wants to impart to her students in her statistics class at Betsy Layne High School  in  rural, eastern Kentucky. Boles also co-leads a Teach For America-sponsored online course on the  edX platform called “Teaching  Social  Justice Through Secondary Mathematics.” She teaches students to respond rationally to data that provokes strong emotions, without immediately responding with arguments. She does so by having them focus on the wider implications of data. It’s making math relevant, but the ultimate goal is to get kids to start asking certain questions of the data that ultimately could lead to civic action.

The first foothold SEL gained in federal law came through the Goals 2000: Educate America Act, signed by President Bill Clinton in 1994 (not coincidentally the same year CASEL came into existence). An early foray into standards-based education reform, Goals 2000 was largely based on OBE. States were required to adopt the statute’s National Education Goals to receive federal funding through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), reauthorized also in 1994 as the Improving America’s Schools Act. This ESEA reauthorization also marked the first time the federal government required statewide standards and tests, which opened the door to more federalized control of education in No Child Left Behind (NCLB), Race to the Top (RttT)/Common Core, and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). SEL was a prominent part of all of these statutory reauthorizations and initiatives...

Even though parental involvement is mentioned, many parents questioned whether the schools, and the federal government, should be setting norms for, or mandating anything related to the emotions and beliefs of their children. Nor did these parents consider themselves mere “partners,” subservient to government entities in this realm. Parents and pro-family organizations have long argued that based on unalienable rights and thousands of years of history, as well as legal precedent, they have the right to direct their children’s education and care, and especially the formation of their children’s attitudes, values, and beliefs. But as shown by Goals 2000, the progressive-education establishment is headed in the opposite direction.

It’s important to note that the Head Start Act conflicts with other federal law that prohibits federal direction or control over school curriculum. The General Education Provisions Act (GEPA) forbids:

…any department, agency, officer or employee of the United States to exercise any direction, supervision, or control over the curriculum, program of instruction, administration, or personnel of any educational institution, school, or school system…

But even though HHS would certainly fall within the “any department” language, HHS through the Head Start Act includes no fewer than eight mandates concerning curriculum. For example, the Act requires “alignment of curricula used in Head Start programs and continuity of services with the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework.”

The Head Start Act itself prohibits HHS involvement with curriculum:

     (a) Limitation - Nothing in this subchapter shall be construed to authorize or permit the Secretary or any employee or contractor of the Department of Health and Human Services to mandate, direct, or control, the selection of a curriculum, a program of instruction, or instructional materials, for a Head Start program.

     (b) Special Rule - Nothing in this subchapter shall be construed to authorize a Head Start program or a local educational agency to require the other to select or implement a specific curriculum or program of instruction.

...So what is different about the new SEL push? For one thing, it transfers the focus of instruction from family, civil, and religious institutions to the school (effectively, to government). It also formalizes and expands what teachers do naturally as part of running a classroom, perhaps with its own standards and curricula—either stand-alone or embedded in academic materials. It includes assessment of how well students perform pursuant to these standards and curricula. Is David sufficiently “empathetic”? Does Jennifer exhibit sufficient “leadership skills”?

SEL doesn’t assume the presence of licensed counselors or other trained clinicians for its implementation. Rather, as illustrated by this CASEL report on recommended SEL programs, standard procedure is to offer some sort of training to teachers and perhaps designated administrators and have them teach the material and evaluate the results (as discussed in detail throughout this paper, this means to assess whether students’ personality or character traits are developing as desired).

Because the data from these assessments may be included in the statewide longitudinal data system, to endure forever and perhaps to shape the child’s future path, there is much justifiable concern about the source and subjectivity of SEL standards and the qualifications of the implementing personnel. Carried to its logical conclusion, SEL can replace parental influence with the ultimate nanny state.

But concerns aside, enormous sums are being poured into SEL in public schools. One 2017 study by a pro-SEL organization estimated that K–12 public-school systems spend approximately $640 million each year on specific programming and practices designed to instill SEL. Teachers also reported that they spend about eight percent of their time on SEL, which would translate into another $30 billion annual investment. Any movement that is claiming such a substantial share of resources should be examined to see what, if anything, its accomplishing, and what problems it may create for children and their families...

In a nutshell, SEL is latest educational fad teaching students to rely on themselves, their peers, and the progressive culture, not the truths proposed by their faith and their families. Progressive social norms become their moral authority. PRIE opposes the “whole child” concept, including character and ethics education, psychological insights, and group dynamics, training children in consequentialist (moral relativism) moral reasoning.

The current popularity of social-emotional learning (SEL) represents progressive education’s greatest victory in its 100-plus-year campaign to transform our public schools, and, thus, the nature of America itself. Since it began, the mission of progressive education has been to liberate American students from the “shackles of traditional wisdom.” John Dewey and his legion of educationalists saw the elementary and secondary schools as the vehicle to form the New American, one who would be liberated from the prejudices of family, church, and tradition.

In the early 20th century, their ideological victories were largely symbolic. They captured intellectually shallow schools of education, but not the public schools themselves. Those schools were rooted in their communities, reflecting local values and governed by local citizens. Post-World War II, the “in loco parentis” tradition of school gave way to more and more control, first by states and more recently by federal intervention. Input from parents on what was to be learned and how schools were to be conducted gave way to ever larger educational commissions and more distant experts.

Instead of parents’ deciding on the ultimate question of education, “What is most worth knowing?” for our children, the new controllers of public education stepped in. Enter the progressive educators. The term “public” came to mean “secular.” The long-held view of the public schools—not only teaching the core disciplines, but also helping children develop a sense of right and wrong and the good habits to put morality into practice—became the battleground. The wisdom of the past, with its history of wars and bigotry, had to be ignored. Prohibited, too, was any reference to God and organized religion. The only source of moral authority for the secular progressives was and is science and “empirically verifiable knowledge.”

The problem with this plan is that science and the empirical method do not lend themselves well to dealing with the questions of the moral life. The ultimate questions of life, which were once a staple of an education, such as “What is a good person?” “How should I live my life?” and “Is there a God?” cannot be answered by the scientific method. Thus, these questions and issues have been eradicated from our schools.

Into this barren educational landscape entered the pseudo-scientific SEL and its claim that social-emotional learning can fill the gap in the lives of America’s children. SEL advocates see teaching students their five “competencies” of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making as the effective replacement for schools’ former moral education and character formation. Committed as they are to development of “the whole child,” progressive educators are promoting these skills as a secular replacement for what parents used to instill in children according to their faith, and to cultural and family beliefs and values...

  • Comprehensive Sexuality Education, PART 3: NOT SAFE or HEALTHY!

Tell us whatcha' think! Send a text to us, here! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our podcast.

CSE Curriculums mislead students to trust contraception, but the Medical Accuracy is bogus

Condoms, touted in all CSE curriculums cannot provide complete protection. Why? Condoms are only being used correctly about 1 time in 5, only 20%. In addition, it is common knowledge STD infections such as HPV and syphilis are still infectious despite condom use, with overall true STD infection rate of 70-80%.

Curriculums do not warn young girls/women of their high risk for STDs. The immature cervix has only 1 cell layer, putting females at particular vulnerability to infection.

PRIE has concern regarding male and female student experimentation with anal sex, believing it is “safe,”  What they are NOT told about is the high risk for infection, tears, and fissures, and bowel incontinence. The fact condoms are not created for anal sex, and commonly break, is replaced with the lie that using a condom assures students’ safety.

Recent statistics for Washington state show the Chlamydia and Gonorrhea infection rate of young girls ages 15-19 is at almost epidemic levels today.

    What’s the risk? When it’s you, it’s 100%.

Again, why are students encouraged to practice oral sex as a form of safe sex, when the Oral Cancer Foundation states 26 million Americans are infected daily with oral HPV virus, and a dramatic increase in oral cancer caused by HPV16 is occurring among young adults?

The UK Lords and Commons Family and Child Protection Group find that their version of CSE, Relationships and Sex Education, has not slowed the increase of STDs. In addition there has been an alarming increase of self-mutilation, and a 169% increase in suicides for adolescents aged 15-19 is occurring from 2010-2015.

Even though Schools in our urban centers have been using the CSE curricula for some time, STD rates and suicides continue to rise.

According to the CDC, since CSE was introduced in Washington state the rates of oral cancers and STIs in youth 15-25 have skyrocketed. CSE explains the most common STIs (gonorrhea, and chlamydia) can live on parts of the body not covered by a condom, therefore one is at great risk of contracting an STI even when using a condom.

Usually, there is no mention of dangers associated with anal sex; incontinence, anal tears, fissures. The fact condoms are not created for anal sex and commonly break, is replaced with the lie that using a condom assures students’ safety.

  • Public Schools, Educational Institutions or Social Service Agencies? EQUITY vs EQUALITY

Tell us whatcha' think! Send a text to us, here! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our podcast.

Jordan Peterson argues, "equality of outcome" is an IMPOSSIBLE goal & TERRIBLE idea. Equity: When the Left Goes Too Far, Jordan Peterson

In fact, it is a Marxist premise which works only in theory. Here’s why: people are individuals. Everything about us is different. We have different interests, talents, gifts, passion, life experiences, and backgrounds.  Our families are different. Some good and some no so great.  Our founders knew this when they drafted the US Constitution...

Dr. Neil Shenvi, a homeschooling theoretical chemist who lives in Durham, North Carolina with his wife and four children, published an article on August 20, 2020 titled, North Carolina Considers Using Public Schools To Discriminate In The Name Of ‘Equality’

“If the board of education is proposing we prioritize equal outcome over equal treatment, it will have to draw clear lines to ensure it doesn't inscribe injustice on the heart of our educational system. It has drawn no such lines.”

    What Is Equity?

Equity is a buzzword in education today, with numerous major school systems (New York, Oregon, Illinois) committing to incorporate it into the curriculum. If you consult the dictionary, “equity” means “the quality of being fair and impartial,” something no parent or educator would dream of opposing. Given this definition, it’s natural to assume equity is merely a synonym of “equality.”

A popular image commissioned by the Interaction Institute for Social Change illustrates the difference between equality and equity in practice. The picture shows three individuals, one tall, one medium height, and one short in stature viewing a baseball game from behind a fence. They are all standing on boxes of equal height. Everyone can see except the short person, who remains shorter than the top of the fence, even with aid of his box. This image is labeled Equality. The next picture features the same scenario, except the tall person has no box, the medium height person has one box as before, and the short person has two boxes to stand on, giving them all similar abilities to see over the fence. This image is labeled Equity.

Note that equality entails giving all three people equal resources but leads to an undesirable outcome, while equity produces a desirable outcome by supposing that some people require unequal resources to offset their disadvantages.

At first glance, the North Carolina resolution appears to be defining equity in terms of equality of opportunity. It maintains that the state Constitution legally obligates the board of education to “ensure equity, demanding ‘equal opportunities shall be provided for all students.’”

Elsewhere, it explicitly defines “educational equity” as “the belief and practice of ensuring that every student is treated in a fair and just manner” and even says that “equity is equality of opportunity.”

Tell us whatcha' think! Send a text to us, here! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our podcast.

Parents’ Rights In Education is definitely not in favor of teaching anti-American political theory to our students. The public school system is funded with local, state, and federal taxpayer money. The practice of teaching US students the US Constitution should be abolished, replaced with Marxism, is against our government and everything we have fought for over the last 250 years! Not only is it wrong, it is treasonous.

Ever since the reaction to George Floyds’ death we have received reports of local student demonstrations, and announcements of new anti-racism curriculums, all inspired by Black Lives Matter. Parents and Teachers are serious about their opposition to this. parents are pulling their children out of fall public school programs, and teachers are refusing to attend Anti-Racism Trainings or teach it to their students. We are making ready to acquire legal defense for any teacher challenged by their district. Are you in agreement?

    MEMO: School Boards and Parents!

School Boards have two primary responsibilities:

    1. Determine policy. Districts have local control when it comes to policy making. They are expected to study policies and agenda items and participate in the process. This is where they need our help and support.

    2. Hire or fire the Superintendent.

  • Comprehensive Sexuality Education, PART 2: CSE is NOT Sex Ed!, Washington State, Initiative 1109

Tell us whatcha' think! Send a text to us, here! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our podcast.

A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by a Washington state counterpart in Spokane area, LeAnna Benn, National Director of Teen Aid. Her primary focus for over 39 years has been development of 15 different life skills curriculums. These successful curriculums have been used by schools internationally.

It was exciting to hear about  LeAnna’s newest project: Initiative 1109. We are so proud of Washington citizens for going to the next level with political push back!

Initiative 1109 offers the OPT-IN requirement for all sexuality curriculums.

Washington Parents’ Rights In Education worked hard to collect signatures to place Referendum 90 on the November ballot. They are now campaigning for its passage. Don’t forget! Check to REJECT!

    “Why is Initiative 1109 needed?”

When Referendum 90 passes, it will roll back the SB5395 which mandated explicit comprehensive Sex Education in all districts. Parents and citizens are furious about the curriculum content  promoted in that bill.

Right now, and even before SB5395, that content is controlled by the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), not at the local district board level, and definitely not by parents.  The curriculum choices, OSPI offers to schools all have the same tone, information, and philosophical foundation. They are all inspired by Planned Parenthood.

Initiative 1109 gives control back to the local school boards. Now, even if Referendum 90 passes, OSPI can easily change the standards and choices of curriculum. How can that be? The Healthy Youth Act passed in 2007, forfeited local control by school boards, to OSPI. Local school boards must have OSPI approval in accordance with their philosophy. Initiative 1109 also repeals the Health Youth Act!

But parents need final the say, right?

Parents, concerned about the emotional and well-being of their children have been left out of this decision making process. Many have strong values which are not respected by these Standards. Parents want real equity in the process. Many are blindsided when they learn their children have been taught ideologies and information they deem inappropriate. This is wrong and biased against these families.

Opt-Out puts parents on the defense. Often, even with a request on file, students are exposed to assemblies, outside speakers, and curriculum from which their parents have requested an exemption.

The default has to be OPT-OUT, giving parents choice and peace of mind knowing their children will not be exposed to medically inaccurate, unhealthy and age inappropriate teaching without their knowledge or consent.

OPT-IN protects the school and board members from unnecessary law suits if a student is mistakenly exposed to such curriculum. It is a Win/Win for both schools and parents.

Now, Washington parents may OPT-OUT. With Initiative 1109, will require OPT-IN! Parents sign their child into the program.

The bottom line is this…vote for Referendum 90 in November!

Help collect signatures to get Initiative 1109 on the November 2021 Ballot.

We must turn in a minimum of 320,000 valid signatures, which will require at least 350,000.

  • Comprehensive Sexuality Education, PART 1: THE KINSEY CONNECTION!

Tell us whatcha' think! Send a text to us, here! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our podcast.

    https://www.parentsrightsined.com/
Parents’ Rights In Education is concerned about the disproportionate focus on sexual relations in public schools beginning in Kindergarten. Designed to change traditional sexual and gender norms of society, controversial behaviors are taught to minors, including details of anal and oral sex, mutual masturbation, and gender options. Even in light of known negative physical and emotional health outcomes for sexually active children, and Age of Consent laws, minors are told they have a RIGHT to have sex early and often, that “[e]ngaging in sexual behaviors should feel pleasurable.”

On the Parents’ Rights In Education there is an ISSUES tab titled K-12 Student Health. We use this term “health” to make a point. This and all other subjects taught are considered by the education establishment, to be for our children’s health. The following information is part of the Comprehensive Sexuality Education issues page.

Kinsey, Father of Comprehensive Sexuality Education
Why the international frenzy to teach children, K-12 to be sexual?

“While no one noticed, at least 317 infants and children were sexually tortured by pedophiles for Kinsey’s allegedly ‘scientific’ child sex data, educators repeated his pedophile conclusions-children were sexual from birth…hence school sex education should be mandated.” Dr. Judith Reisman

Dr. Reisman is accepted as an international expert witness on human sexuality. Her study supports the conclusion that Alfred Kinsey's research was contrived, ideologically driven and misleading.

Contrary to popular belief, those who oppose Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) are not against sex ed. Typical accusations include cultural ignorance, and uncaring attitudes about premarital pregnancy, which is utterly and completely false.

Parents today want their children to be knowledgeable about their developing bodies, understand the risks associated with sexual relations at an early age with multiple partners, including pregnancy, HIV, and STI prevention. Although CSE curriculums address these issues the underlying premise, and actual curriculum focus is of greatest concern.

Alfred Kinsey, considered the father of CSE, built it on the premise children are born sexual beings. And because of it, they have a right to sexual pleasure by themselves, or with a partner. Even more incredulous is the notion children should be involved in regular sexual activity to maintain good health.

Inspired by these theories current law provides children rights to sexual privacy and autonomy, birth control, and abortion, purposely excluding parents. According to Kinsey followers, most societal sexual and gender norms, especially those based in religious beliefs are considered repressive, even unhealthy, and should be changed.

The following story is a true account by "research subjects" for the Kinsey human sexuality project at Indiana State University. This one is taken from Casualities of Kinsey, THE TRUTH ABOUT THE FOUNDER OF SEXUAL DECAY IN AMERICA published by Abstinence Clearinghouse featuring my friend, and renowned advocate for parents’ rights, Dr. Judith Reisman. http://www.ParentsRightsInEd.com
    Saturday August 8, 2020

by Suzanne Gallagher, Parents’ Rights In Education, Executive Director

Parents’ Rights In Education has worked hard over the last several years to build our base, informing parents and motivating them to action.

Something new is in the air, now…

The Chinese Virus in many ways has been a shot in the arm. Parents barely have time to brush their teeth, let alone pay attention to what the government schools are doing, and even less… memorize the names of their government servants!

But…Tiny Tony and Katie Brown have wakened a Sleeping Giant… PARENTS! They just “WOKE!”

    Public Schools are self-destructing!

Yes, it’s mostly about the un-opening of the schools for person-to-person instruction, and mandatory all-day masks…but now, the last straw is NO school but virtual school. It’s not clinically necessary, and it’s doesn’t work, academically.

K-12 Education is our focus. The present state of our education system is dire at best. We are falling short in every area imaginable,…and then some.
What began as a push against inappropriate sexuality courses, has now become a fight to stop Marxist indoctrination, and recruitment of student militant activists!

Is it tyranny to teach respect for God, country, the US Constitution, and family? No! Even more compelling, I ask you, is it treason for public schools to teach students to overthrow their government using militant force?

Back-to-School? We know this is political…and parents are furious! They have diligently responded to requests for participation and feedback from the ODE and their local districts, only to discover the real intent. Schools will not open for class until after the Presidential election!

E-mails don't work! Phone calls don' work! Even if you do send your child  back-to-school, instruction is compromised! Mandatory masks, anti socialization, and punishment if students do not comply, is unacceptable.

I remind you, there is  99.96% survival rate for the Chinese virus! These big government bureaucrats will not listen, because they don't have to, and they don't care. In fact…they don’t think parents have a clue!

I believe…what seems like a horror story, is going to be a miracle.

You will make your voice heard by Un-Enrolling your child! Hey, teachers strike, right? Why not parents? Show the bureaucrats we will not take this! By doing so, local districts will lose funding.

SEND THE MOST POWERFUL MESSAGE, YOU CAN!

UN-ENROLL! When you Un-ENROLL…YOU are in control.

You can always Re-enroll, when and if districts are willing to listen to your requests. We know for a fact the Teachers’ Union is against parents working with local school boards. They spoke loud and clear when they intimidated Molalla SD to rescind the Parents’ Rights In Education Proclamation, and replaced it with their own version, requiring parents to work with teachers, and not influence policy at the school board level, which is your right!

Choose Homeschooling. Parents are creating cooperatives and hiring certified teachers. Some parents are staying home full time, and others are working part time and sharing the responsibility with spouses and/or friends.

We believe in American creativity and resourcefulness. You can do this!

Children belong to their families, NOT the state, the teachers, the teachers’ union, or any other bureaucrat.

We believe parents have the final say, and call the shots.

Please stand with us, speak up, and join our cause!
