  • Part-Time Fanboy Podcast: Ep 604 Fred Van Lente Plunders Blood Soaked Seas in Vampyrates!

Fred Van Lente is a writer who is never lacking in ideas. But when it came to his latest book it was his artist collaborator, Luca Pizzari, who inspired the project with just one phrase that happened to be stuck in his head..."Vampyrates!" When Fred heard that word escape from Luca's lips, a new comic series was born. One that was focused on a world of swashbuckling vampires, living in an alternate history where a thousand year eclipse has made vamps the masters of the seven seas and beyond. On this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast, Kristian chats with Fred about his newest series being published through Boom! Studios. Fred talks about why the idea of blending vampires with pirates was so appealing to him, which half of the Vampyrates! combination he likes better, buccaneers or bloodsuckers, and how his role playing game expertise helped him in creating the setting in which his new comic book takes place.

  • Part-Time Fanboy Podcast: Ep 603 Chris Ryall Accomplishes the Uncanny With the Publication of John Byrnes’ X-Men Elsewhen!

A little over five years ago, comic book legend John Byrne started randomly drawing X-Men comic book pages and posting them on his online forum. Without any fanfare or expectation of payment or publication, Byrne began telling his own alternate timeline version of X-Men history. He branched off from the original intended resolution of the Dark Phoenix Saga where Jean Grey survives the merry band of mutants' confrontation with the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. Reaction from the online community was immediate with fans expressing everything from disbelief to unbridled joy. Questions abounded: Why was John Byrne doing this? Was this an official Marvel project? Will this ever be published? Is this even legal???

On this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast Kristian chats with Chris Ryall, the editor responsible for bringing John Byrne together with Marvel editor C. B. Cebulski so that X-Men Elsewhen could be officially be published in print by Abrams ComicArts. Kristian chats with Ryall about the history behind Elsewhen, they speculate on why Byrne even started doing what he did, and how Chris managed to help get a project in print that was never meant to be published in physical form.

    Episode Six Hundred is here!

Gabe Cheng is a writer who's had lots of success on Kickstarter with one shot comics like The Problem With Parallels, Crashlands, and Requiem in Relke. For a long time Gabe's not really been interested in exploring a narrative past one single issue. His comics have been examinations of different stories in different genres that only stuck to one self contained tale...until now. With his newest comic, This Seems Normal (now funding on Kickstarter) Gabe has decided to not only go past one single issue but to tell a fun filled romp of a story that tackles all of the genres at one time. On this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast, Kristian chats with Gabe about why he decided to abandon the single story format he'd been working in for so long, how his latest work has deep ties to his own relationship with his family and siblings, and why he decided to let go of the preconceived notions of what a comic story should be so he could just enjoy telling the stories he wanted to tell.
