Things get just a little deeper in this shorter installment. We will REALLY dig in Part 3 - Episode 26! This is wild!
Keep this notion in mind! Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I WILL challenge Susan. These things should not be taken lightly.

This is part 1 of my first discussion with Susan Lindauer. There will likely be others. We have some differences of opinion on a few things, some profound. But it is an interesting conversation.

I don’t want Pete Hegseth fired. The troops love him. And I knew the moment he was picked there would be some frat boy kinks that would have to be worked out of his system. And I wish Mike Walz hadn’t been demoted. But a very public ass chewing for both would have been appropriate. My problem with the Signal debacle runs deeper than the sloppy use of a commercial communications app.
So here’s the pickle. The alternative to using Signal would be to use the slow, clunky, often compromised Department of Defense SIPRnet or another classified network. Not only is the use of it inefficient (nobody is running around with a cellular device that can make good use of those nets - not whole teams anyway), but the Chinese, Koreans, Ukrainians, Russians have set up shop on those nets many times before.
I heard a report a few years back that a Chinese hack had been discovered at DoD, probably through a contractor’s computer, and no one knew how to get the bug off the network! They believed it may have been there for up to two years! It was just Xi shopping for military weapons designs. Nothing to worry about.
So when people got the vapors over the use of Signal, which until last month came pre-installed in devices issued to some federal employees, which the previous administration instructed their people to use for secure point to point communications, which is far more secure than SIPR, I didn’t go all wide-eyed and spit out my coffee. But I did smirk and shake my head.
Here’s why.
For all the money we piss away at the Pentagon, our tech is still ham-handed and amateurish. That’s because it is all design-by-committee, each member wanting to have their fingerprints obvious on the product. And these people are not the crem de la crem of the IT world. For an unclassified example, go to a government website and navigate it. It is NOT intuitive, it is NOT user friendly and the cover pages are crammed with representations of lists of every organization in that space. Some have improved over the years, slowly and far behind private sector products. Even the stuff designed by contractors is weighted down by MILSPEC and credit hounds.
So I get no comfort that people are using “secure” systems, which run on the internet, over encripted point to point apps. But there ARE problems with the apps.
The first is the obvious problem Pete had in March. There is no mechanism that defines a user, no restrictions. “Need-to-know” is replaced with “Hey, check this out!” Walz’s deputy threw together a distro for the Yemen group. How HE would have ACCIDENTLY included a NYT reporter is beyond fishy. But I am not here to deal with that right now. No matter the medium, such lists should not be wide. They should be very narrow and carefully considered.
This was extra embarrassing and harder to explain when another sensitive Signal thread was reported to include Pete’s wife and brother, and a number of people without clearance. The attitude in these threads, at least prior to the leak, seems to be a bit too chatty, chummy and extraneous. So not only do we have a communications hardware problem, we need to tighten up on chatter.
The second and REAL problem with this form of communications is historical preservation. Unless you leak the shit to a reporter, there is no historical record of what was said and done. I know there are people who read that last sentence and said so what! Who cares if there is no history. They can make notes on the side. For people who don’t understand history, that’s why we keep real time records of comunications.
Without those comms, we have no near term lessons learned for an exercise. We have no legal record in the event actions are challenged and we have no long term record for historians to piece together an accurate record of events. Requiring records also makes potential shadow government operations more difficult. It isn’t too difficult to operate in the shadows, but the gaps leave a trail almost as well as messages might.
So where does that leave us. I think the key take-away is we need a closed, stand-alone network that works like Signal. Quick, agile and encrypted end to end. It should be capable of dropping a copy of all comms in an archive. (See, right there, the storage creates a vulnerability - a point of failure.)
I’ve spoken to people who really don’t care about the use of Signal in official comms. And I know people who are livid about it. I see why both feel that way. But the choices versus efficiency and real security suck.
Update 1
We had the annual rich bitches version of Nerd Prom last night. The theme for the Met Gala was a now-outdated, race obsessed pander to empty-headed rick black people and their guilty white liberal pals. The red carpet was a mix of amazing clothes and idiots who looked like the threw a granade into a thrift shop and wore whatever landed on them.
Honorabel mentions: Kendell Jenner, Serena Williams, Tyla and Diana Ross looked amazing. And there were others who looked really amazing. Kamala and Doug looked like rich whities crashing a Motown party. Lauryn Hill, Demi Moore and Walton Goggin took nice clothing ideas and made them stupid [Look at me! Look at me!]. Madonna achieved a look Elton wishes he could have pulled of, but he was a pudgy little guy.
There were a few people who took the theme, which droned on about the black diaspora and how fashion was a form of resistance (I swear you can’t make this stuff up) and turned in on its ear. These folks were plainly trying to portray themselves as the worst self-parody you can imaging. They were trying to be goofy stereotypes. These included Jenelle Monae, Tramell Tillman, Andre 3000, Rege-Jean Page, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz.
As it has been for some years now, the gala was just another gathering of conceited, rich, mostly showfolk. They strutted their conspicuous consumption while telling the world they are apalled by income inequality. And as a bonus this year, the really, really, REALLY cared about black people. I can just see the absurdly rich blue blood, Anna Wintour planning this years theme…Those blacks like to play dress-up. Let’s do something with that. And, ya know, talk about poor people too.
Update 2
We’re still working the Wisconsin thing. And just so you know, there are probably Wisconsin people subscribed. But they would have come over from my Wordpress days. They wouldn’t show up on my Substack subscription heat map. Only newbies would. AND I WANT TO SEE WISCONSIN TURN ORANGE!
Update 3
Friday’s show will be an interesting conversation with CIA whistle-blower Susan Lindauer. It may end up being an episode with a sequel later as I have a lot of material to research in support of an extensive interview. I broke my own rule by letting her name out of the hat before the interview is in the can. But she’s flogging a book, so hopefully, all will go smoothly.
Update 4
The Navy and the Army are celebrating their 250th birthdays this year. Get onboard with the festivities. DC and Philly are gearing up for some serious events. More no those events later.
You can get some Army and Navy gear at Po River. Enjoy the year.
More things you MUST think about with Trump’s tariff policies
I am not a tariff supporter. I don’t blindly oppose the tariffs. At THIS MOMENT I am a tariff agnostic. That’s because I don’t know how serious Trump is about tariffs to begin with, or what he intends to accomplish with them.
Generally, tariffs are a stupid idea. All trade barriers are. They cost citizens, in the countries with the barriers in place, more for anything they want to buy from the targetted nation. The more ciritcal the item, the more unethical the placement of tariffs are. They are unethical because they help absolutely NO ONE but the companies protected by the barrier.
Here’s a counterintuitive example. Subsidies. They are a trade barrier too. Just like tariffs. Any time a government interferes in the price of a product or service it is an insult to free trade and a sop for one crony or another.
In the case of the American sugar industry, you pay a slighly cut rate for you sugar. The price is kept artificially low to keep foreign sugar from being conpetitive. We destroyed the British Honduras’ (Belize) economy this way. What you don’t feel is the billions of your tax dollars go directly to sugar producers on top of what you already paid them.
When countries legitimately make thing cheaper than we do and ship them here, we howl about how unfair it is. When governments use tariffs or subsidies to thwart our products, we howl. But it’s okay for us to wreck small economies to keep rich cronies rich on our tax dollars.
That’s a the general argument about these schemes. But they exist across the globe, governments everywhere lick the toes of the cronies that own them and interfere with free trade all day long. We just have the lightest touch at this time. So if tariffs are a reality, what is the Donald’s plan for them?
Right now, he appears to be flailing and pissing ideas all over the wall without a reasoned approach. That may be because he is keeping his views close to his vest in an effort to fool his neogtiating partners into favorable agreements. (The most beautiful agreements. So beautiful. Agreements like you’ve nobody has ever seen.).
OR he’s pissing all over the wall without a reasoned approach.
We can’t know what is true because he has offered two diametrically opposed versions of what the end game is. With one, he wants a big beautiful income for the United States government from a permanent tariff scheme, so much so that he can cut or eliminate the income tax. This is the most stupid of the two outcomes. What you don’t pay in income tax, you’ll pay in tariffs. And if you avoid foreign goods, or buy used to avoid the tariffs, they have to raise you taxes again. Thanks, Don.
The other option is to force countries to remove their tariffs and practice free trade. At that point we’d remove our tariffs. BOOM! We have free trade where you pay for what you want and don’t pay for anyone else.
BUT…
He’s talking about imposing a permanent 10% tariff against foreign goods. Let’s say that works. Everybody agrees. Their cronies got a 10% bump. US cronies get a 10% bump. And it’s not enought to offset the income tax - ALL OF WHICH YOU WILL PAY ANYWAY!!!!!!
So what the fuck is the end game? The markets, and to some extent the economy, went batshit at the disorganized announcement of the tariff schemes. Then they calmed down when a 90 day hold was announced. They’ll go batshit again at the end of the 90 days if the whole issue hasn’t been buttoned up.
That’s because we don’t know what the hell these knuckleheads advising Trump wish to accomplish. We don’t know what the point is. If it is anything other than free trade (And it won’t be free trade. I’ll explain in a second.), the markets will take another giant dump on about 50 days from now.
So how do I know free trade is not the intent of this nonsense?
To establish a true free trade we need OUR political whores to stop licking the toes of cronies in this country. They need to be told that no barriers will be set up on either end to support them. If you want to make widgets, but can’t compete on the foreign markets, you can’t export you widgets - downsize!
Unions need to become what they were intended to be; a safe work environment and a living wage. If a worker wants to stay on the line and not move up, he won’t make $80k with full benefits. The company will hire a young guy. You move up or out.
Welcome to the realities of free markets and free trade. If you settle for anything else, you’d be stupid to bitch about the cost of goods or the governement being too involved in your life.
There are people who call themselves conservatives cheering the Donald pursuing the big government, central planning option. Who wants to be the first to tell them?
Blind followers will support anything Trump does, no matter how poorly executed - no matter how poorly communicated. People suffering from TDS will oppose it because ORANGE MAN BAD! But thinking people don’t have a position because of all the flailing. We have no evidence to support it. We have no evidence to oppose it. We have no evidence at all. We just see numbers being tossed around. Even Treasury Secretary Bessent didn’t give us a sense of an end game in front of Congress today.
Without at least an outline of what trade will look like after the dust settles (they don’t have to tell us exactly how they intend to get there), reasonable people have no basis on which to debate the value of the idea.
Here is a short education in free trade with extra links. I highly recommend you read it.

Zinging Kinzinger…Again
The man who got weepy over the J6 mini riot has spent every day of his life, from that day to this, in a constant display of TDS. He will say anything, often ridiculous things, either because he is truly stupid, or he doesn’t mind looking stupid, in order to please his Lefty friends.
His latest rant involves Ukraine vs Russia. In it he echoes all the emotional, illogical talking points we’ve been force fed for three years now.
Ukraine is “winning”.
Russia is losing 1,000 men per day.
Russia is the enemy.
Ukraine is the front line of freedom and democracy.
Trump is an advocate for Putin.
And oh no! What will we become?
There’s more, all just as simple-minded stuff, but I don’t have time for it all.
Winning?
Let’s start with the first rant: Ukraine is winning. For a guy who spent time in uniform, who is educated and should be expected to analyze a situation with a bit more skill, this is among the most dangerous of all his rants - and easily, the most ignorant.
When political whores make exclamations like this they embolden the war monger, shiny object, military-industrial power players to keep wars going! In this case the war itself is a complete waste of time, money AND LIVES!
To win a war, you MUST take all disputed territory and ALL the enemy’s territory, and eliminate the enemy’s ability to resist your will. Anything else is a negotiated outcome. Anything else is NOT victory. There is no conceivable scenario in which Ukraine marches on Moscow, defeats Russia and gets its territory back. This a physical and mathematical non-starter. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!
In fact, the leadership of Ukraine knew this early on. It was the West, emboldened by people as stupid as Adam or as bent as Biden, who kept that war going. Hell, they could have prevented it to begin with if they REALLY put Putin’s nuts in a wringer BEFORE Russia stepped off. But they didn’t. They telegraphed all their “sanctions” for months and spent TWO YEARS implementing them. THEY WANTED THIS WAR AS BADLY AS PUTIN DID!
Since that time, Ukraine has sent kids into the meat grinder KNOWING there was no end game - no return for their sacrifice. By the time this is all over, Ukraine still won’t have Crimea or the Eastern provinces back. It will all have been for nothing. And that was the numerical reality BEFORE the war started.
Did the Ukraine surprise ALL of us by standing tough all this time? YEAH!They even pinched off small bits of territory. But that is of no STRATEGIC significance.
Russia is losing 1000 troops per day.
I said before, quoting heads pointier than my own, Ukraine had to kill 8 Russians for every Ukrainian for years in order to FORCE Russia to cease hostilities. They haven’t done that. And Kinzinger is careful not to quote Ukrainian losses. They range from 17,500 per month, according to the documents leaked from the Pentagon, to 30,000 per month from some media outlets. That’s a range of 600-1000 lost per day. Based on the crybaby’s numbers, I don’t call that winning. Ukraine is a smaller country with a smaller population. Keep in mind, I don’t know if any of these numbers are correct. You don’t know. And Kinzinger DAMN sure doesn’t know. But his article is emotion-based, not fact-based. So, he doesn’t need any facts.
Those losses are magnified by the fact that the war is being fought on Ukrainian territory. Not just soldiers are being killed. Civilians are killed every day. There have been months during this war that were worse then the entire Blitz over England. The more the West pumps money and encouragement into the conflict, the richer the oligarchs IN UKRAINE become and the more soldiers and civilians die. Ukraine does not have an inexhaustible supply of humans. Ukraine is flush with corrupt mobsters.
Does that mean Russia will win? NO!!!! But they won’t be overrun by Ukrainians either. This will be, if it isn’t already, one of the ugliest stalemates since Korea. Nobody is “winning” this fucking thing. Every life lost, on either side, especially among Ukrainian civilians, is a life wasted.
Joe Biden’s handlers - Obama, Jarrett, Klain and others - WANTED this war and wanted it to continue right through the last election. Now, they don’t care what happens in Ukraine. They only pitch fits NOW because they are against ANY action Donald Trump takes on ANY issue, including peace in Ukraine! If their protests or stupid remarks like the ones Kinzinger made in his post lead to more deaths, that’s fine with the Left. So long as they think they can make the Donald look bad, they’re okay with it. And the EU feels exactly the same way as Biden’s handlers do. The EU can’t even have an adult conversation about free speech, for chissake!
Russia is the enemy!
Really, candy ass?
I’ll admit that over the years, I have said a lot of accusatory things about Vladimir Putin. I believe they are all true. I used to tell my intel buddies, in a past life, to NOT take their eye off of Central and Eastern Europe because Putin never got the memo that the cold war was over. That met with tolerant smirks, even after Georgia was attacked.
I have repeatedly referred to Putin as the Little Russian Jerkoff on this Substack. I think that is the perfect characterization for this corrupt, hyper-sensitive, sexually dubious…meh, over-compensating punk.
BUT!!!!!!
Those were my personal observations. They do not constitute a REAL enemy. We are NOT at war with Russia. The West is NOT at war with Russia. Therefore, unless you are a candy ass, ex-GOP crybaby, or a media hack, Russia is not OUR enemy. They ARE Ukraine’s enemy. And Ukraine, before the war was not our friend. They’ve been an occasional plaything. They were nothing to us. So you can’t even say the enemy of my friend is my enemy. Nor would that be good policy, which should always be about American interests first, last and always.
But we do find ourselves at odds with Russia, specifically Putin because we’ve let him get away with hell for two decades, while provoking him geographically at every opportunity. Why? Shiny object, remember? It was actually B. Hussein Obama, peace be upon him, that was the MOST friendly with Putin throughout Putin’s expansive years. But switching to the “Putin is the enemy” talk gives them a shiny object. There’s no honest policy-making involved. There’s no concern for loss of life involved with the Dem leadership and toadies like Adam.
But there are people, people like Adam, who would love to see Russia become an actual enemy. They’d love to see our kids thrown into the meat grinder. That would let them appear manly, until such a war becomes costly, at which time they would undermine the Commander-in-Chief. But no worries. We don’t have anybody in the White House right now stupid enough to go to war for no reason. So no, whatever the Little Russian Jerkoff constitutes, he’s not our enemy.
Then there’s the whole “frontline of freedom” thing.
Why is Ukraine NOW the front line of freedom? Crybaby Adam’s exact words about defending Ukraine were “It’s defending a front line of freedom, and it’s in our national interest.” [emphasis his] There is so much wrong with this assertion.
But let’s stick to my question first. Ukraine is NOW the front line (not of freedom. Ukrainians live under the yoke of a REAL oligarchy as opposed to a Bernie Sanders version of oligarchy) of anything? They are the front line because since 1994, 5 years after the Berlin Wall fell, we have been snapping up Central and Eastern European countries and putting them in NATO. And that is precisely what we had promised Russia we would not do.
“Not an inch to the east”, we swore, if the Soviets would just clear out of Europe. With each succeeding breach of this commitment Russia would howl. When Putin showed up he warned he intended to do more than howl.
Granted, there is not much he can do to stop NATO expansion, which has gone far beyond it’s mandate. But what he can do, and has tried to do gradually, is create his own buffer zone along his borders. He attacked Georgia in two places under Bush 43, he’s established slave states like Belarus, took the Crimea with barely a whimper from Barry O. Even with the UN, EU and NATO behind him, Obama was left with his thumb up his ass. Now the Little Russian Jerkoff wants to tear another chunk off Ukraine.
If he could, he’d go all the way to the mountains in western Ukraine. Some think that was his goal in attacking Ukraine in ‘22. I have my doubts. The near settlement in the first weeks of the war would indicate his limited intentions.
Abkhasia, South Ossetia, Crimea. We let him get away with it all. And now it’s a few provinces in eastern Ukraine. Putin is a thief, an ankle biter backed by organized criminals, massive strategic resources and nukes. He’s not a military genius, nor are any of his generals.
And what is he facing in Ukraine? Well, mostly it is a constitutional mess, created in part by the US, UK and the EU. All real power in Ukraine, as in Russia, is held by criminal oligarchs. The difference being that Putin is the mob boss in Russia and Zelenskyy is a puppet - a figurehead. Between the two forces there is a shooting war that predates Zelenskyy. Two of the contested provinces had already declared themselves independent states.
Despite dangling NATO membership over the heads of numerous Ukrainian governments since 1997, something which is intended to provoke Putin (remember Orwell’s assertion - oppressive governments NEED enemies, even if it means creating them), nobody since Bush 41 has given a damn about Ukraine. They’ve all known it to be a black market sewer with a really good agricultural sector. If you need proof of this, look no further than Gazprom, the Biden crime family and “well, sonofabitch!”
So, Kinzinger, there is no real freedom on the line here. And the line is where NATO and the EU intended the line to be. They intended to poke the bear.
But I know, I know, Adam. Your fairy tale surrounds the possibility of Russia suddenly marching across Ukraine and attacking NATO. Yeah, right! As I’ve said here before, if that happened, France, Poland and Sweden could draw straws to see which one would drive Russia from the field. Putin stands NO CHANCE against NATO. That is a non-factor and Ukraine doesn’t make it a factor.
Trump is an advocate for Putin?
This pissy complaint deserves special attention because it not only demonstrates the crybaby’s unoriginal thinking and petty nature, it also shows how ignorant he and his ilk truly are.
Quote:
But instead of holding Russia accountable, Trump has become Putin’s loudest advocate in the United States. He refuses to even say that Russia is the aggressor. He can't utter a sentence condemning the illegal invasion of a sovereign democracy. Why? Because in Trump’s world, standing up to a dictator doesn’t earn you applause — submission does. This isn’t foreign policy; it’s capitulation wrapped in cowardice.
First, let’s dispose of who is a coward and who is not. DJT returned to Butler and had outdoor functions whenever he could BECAUSE he’d been shot at. He always takes the path that will lead to the loudests attacks by his critics, because his pursuits always threaten the permanent governing class. And he has been brutally punished for that.
Adam Kinzinger, on the other hand is not only a sycophant of this governing class, he is a willing puppet. When the Wretch, Pelosi chose her crew of DJT haters for her illigitimate J6 committee, did Kinzinger tell her he’d only serve if the minority on the committee reflected the desires of the GOP caucus? Nooooo. He jumped right in, still wiping his tears from his J6 speech. He feared the Wretch and wanted everybody to like him, so he got the most severe case of TDS in history. Those around him, on that very committee held him in complete contempt. But they were glad to have his voice and the false image of bipartisanship. What a gutless tool.
Now to his criticism of the peace process.
Again, opposition to peace talks, which are ongoing, has nothing to do with taking a moral stand on the war either way. This certainly isn’t the case with Kinzinger. It is entirely about slinging mud at Trump. As Schumer said in a recent speech, his goal is to reduce Trump’s popularity and support. Nowhere in that speech did Chuck the Schmuck have a single idea to serve the electorate. It’s all Get Trump! And so it is with Ukraine.
Adam, when a head of state enters into negotiations he may or may not butter up his opposite number. But what he won’t do, if he wants to be successful, is add recriminations to the mix. …Well, unless he’s a complete morin like yourself. Do you remember when Trump brought North Korea to the table in his last term. He came into office calling Kim a lunatic and rocket boy, anything but good guy. He threatened to sanction NOKO into the stone ages if they didn’t stop launching missile all over the Pacific.
Lefty poofs, similar to Adam Kinzinger now, cried all day about how destabilizing Trump’s rhetoric was. “He’s going to cause war with North Korea! Nuclear war! WWIII!”
But Kim blinked. Trump saw an opening. Right away Trump went into deal mode. He spoke very kindly toward the crazy fat kid. And Trump did something NO other president had done. He started a conversation with NOKO.
And how did the panty-clad Left and their fluffers in the media react? Without skipping a beat, they said Trump supports dictators, Trump caved to the crazy fat kid.
And so it is today. Obama’s puppet never once tried to wind down the war in Ukraine. Neither the puppet nor the puppet master has a clue how to handle foreign policy. It bores Obama. And like everything else, it confuses Biden. So, other than putting on sanctions VERY SLOWLY over two years, there was no effort made to end the war, only prolong it.
Trump spent his entire campaign saying he was going to end the stupid war. It’s needless killing, and NOT in our interest no matter who wins or loses. The EU and the Middle East may feel differently about that, but that’s not our problem, it is therefore not Trump’s problem. And the press laughed at him. They said he would never end the war. He only wanted to help Putin conquer Ukraine.
Inside of 45 days, Trump had the parties at the table. Did the naysayers like Kinzinger take a pause and say, well that’s a good thing anyway. Nope. They doubled down on the Trump loves dictators bullshit.
But if we don’t defeat Russia (in this case over mountains of dead Ukrainian bodies), what will we become?
This has been the underlying message since the shiny object war started. If we don’t keep paying to drag this war out we will be…what? Inhumane? Uncivilized? Big, fat jerks? What?
Prolonging the war serves criminal oligarchs in Ukraine and political whores in the EU and US. It sure as hell doesn’t serve the people of Ukraine. And what choice are Ukrainians looking at? A life dominated by rich criminal punks in Kiev or rich criminal punks in Moscow.
Our involvement in Ukraine, as it was in Vietnam and Korea and Central America, is a pecker contest with Russia. They have never devolved to our advantage or Russia’s. Pecker contests are always counterproductive and embarrassing to watch.
So far, we have been complicit in the needless loss of hunderds of thousands of lives. Whatever we might “become” by stopping the meat grinder, it would be a far better thing than what girly shills like Kinzinger would have us be.
Stop the killing. Ignore Karens like Kinzinger. Cheers.

Delaware County, Pa has become a microcosm of everything that is wrong - everything that is failing - in America. My hometown was once a solid, middle class success story. Some of it still is. But the political hacks that run the county are working hard to turn it into a failing Blue zone.

We will discuss, with an authority, Green Scams, the viability of wind and solar farms and will just start to touch on some of the troubles we see in Europe. We will continue that discussion, and get more deeply into REAL energy solutions, in Ep. 20. Cheers.

Apropos of nothing, but have you caught the last two Mall rallies in DC? They were a circus of old fogies trying to rekindle the 60’s (they think their youth was more important than anyone else’s) and young ‘uns who heard of the 60s and are desperate to have a 60s of their own. It’s embarrassing to watch. The geriatric political hacks two weeks ago at the podium with a guitar trying to get the audience to sing folk songs…ugh!
And both “rallies” were staged events. There was nothing organic or grass roots about either event. They started and stopped on the clock.
Has anybody seen my old friend Bobby? Can you tell me where’s he’s gone…. Oh, Christ!
And what the hell are they protesting? DOGE is working around the clock to prevent the waste of the your money that the government has it’s filthy meat hooks all over. The goal is to eventually get it back to you. No benefits have been cut. No rights have even been discussed, nor will they be.
But so far, this nonsense is the only approach the Left has to the real business of living.
Oh, well. To business!
I’ll start with an acknowledgement that few mention, especially among the blind followers of the tariff regime. The Unites States of America is SUPPOSED to have trade deficits. We are at once the richest nation in the world. More and more, that is just a reality on paper. But we are. We are one of the two most productive nations in the world. We sell more and consume more than anyone. So, yeah, you cannot BALANCE that out, and you don’t want to. That does not excuse the rest of the world for putting up artificial barriers on our goods. In doing so they hurt their own people as much as they hurt us. If their people want our goods THEIR GOVERNMENTS make them pay anywhere from 10% to 290% more for those goods.
That’s cowardly and stupid. If a Canadian pays $3 extra dollars for American milk, that’s $2 less each has to pursue other activities. Read Economics in One Lesson by Hazlitt.
It’s not accident I use the example of Canada and milk. They slam our milk with insane tariffs and destroy millions of gallons of milk every year to keep the price of domestic milk UP! And Canadians put up with that shit! I also use Canada a lot in these discussions because they stand the most to lose if they get this wrong. If the libs remain in power there, their economy WILL tank.
As I said before, on this Substack, the idea of allowing other countries to fuck with our trading status was born out of their need to rebuild after war or develop so they could become players in the global markets. A noble and forward-thinking approach to commerce. But the tariffs we tolerated were only intended to be a shirt term cash infusion to stand up manufacturing and infrastructure.
Sadly, countries like Canada have made the existence of tariff income a permanent pillar of their economies. Several generations of economists and politicians came of age factoring the extra money, a tax on their own people and a barrier to our goods as a constant factor in making economic decisions.
They have literally built everything they have on the backs of American workers and entrepreneurs. That means their status vis-a-vis the United States is artificial. It isn’t sound economics. It’s a form theft. It’s theft we have tolerated. To be certain, through the use of “speaking fees” (BJ Bill), contributions to “foundations” (BJ Bill’s wife and Obama) and outright cash payments (the Biden crime syndicate and Mitch McConnell) these nations were able to keep tariffs in place long after they should have been countered by the US. Certainly their is a much longer list of politicians who have gotten some kind of kickback, even if it’s campaign donations, to keep the economic abuses in place.
For better or for worse, Trump has finally said, “no mas!”
There are all manner of ways the Trump Tariff scheme succeeds or fails. If you’ve been with me for more than a few weeks, you know I would not have used tariffs as my weapon of choice. That doesn’t mean they won’t have the desired effect. They might. But tariffs are a drag on any free-market economy.
As this saga unfolds, and I listen to the TDS victims, I am reminded of how the world usually treats Israel. Since 1948, with the exception of the ‘67 war wherein the armies of 5 nations were already formed at Israel’s borders, Israel has always RESPONDED to attacks. They didn’t look for opportunities to launch them.
In every case we’d immediately hear how BOTH sides need to practice restraint and how evil Israel is for punching back. The initial attacks that cause the fighting get a passing mention at best, always smothered with excuses offered by what is supposed to be an honest media.
Now, we have Trump FINALLY deciding punch back on a world that has been jacking us up for decades, pricing our goods out of the market, or at best just making them less competitive in their domestic markets. The indignation by political opponents, and “academia” douche bags, is Orwellian. I have read repeatedly that tariffs are bad and Trump ought not employ them.
Wait…what? Nations around the globe have been doing it to us since WWII. Never a word has been uttered about it (except by Democrat politicians in the 90s). No, it’s all how bad Trump is for imposing tariffs. I have yet to hear a single talking head in legacy media or read an article, even in the WSJ, railing against tariffs imposed on us!
That idiot PM of the UK says global trade is dead because of Trump’s tariffs. Everyone else’s tariffs, they’re okay. We put them up and trade is dead. Can you see the absurdity?
So how will it all pan out?
The possibilities are too numerous to capture entirely. However, we can make general assumptions.
Politics
First is Congress. There are Dems and a few Swamp rat RINOs already submitting legislation to stomp on Trump’s plans. NONE of these political whores has an alternative solution to the kind of trade imbalances. As we’ve seen many have a financial interest in keeping their own country behind the eight ball…Mitch! Read Secret Empires by Peter Schweitzer.
If the House leadership stands their ground and let’s this thing play out, we WILL see incentives for companies to move here. This is something that must happen quickly. With the potential damage we could do to China, it needs to happen 5 years ago!
The Domestic Market
There will obviously be a shift in purchasing. Wherever there is a choice on offer, more people will buy American IF most American manufacturers and retailers don’t respond to this new market like a pack of drooling assholes. Let me explain:
We use foreign-made wrench A, Domestic wrench B and Domestic wrench C. We’ll assume all three are of the same quality. The principal will apply to all goods.
A sells for $23.
B sells for $27
C sells for $27
With the new tariffs, we’ll say wrench A is from China and now sells for $32. The domestic tool manufacturers consider their positions. B decides to sell their wrench for $31.50. He knows he can still beat the foreign brand and make a killing. C says, “I am now competing with other domestic brands, so I will assume some market volatility and and inflation, so I will price my wrench at $28 and still make a profit.
In the last round of tariffs we saw American appliance manufacturers chose the B route. So the consumer got a double whammie. Higher prices for foreign goods and ALMOST equally higher prices for domestic goods. Then the American manufacturers complained of slacking sales despite the tariffs. Greed can make you stupid.
If domestic companies play the long game, like wrench C, and don’t kill ALL the apatite for their goods, they will move mountains of goods by volume and we all prosper. I am not sanguine, kiddies.
Wall Street
As I said in a recent post, the reaction to the tariff scheme is fueled by two things. One is the fact that investment banks and high rollers have money in funds and equities all over the world. It will take a while for them to balance out their portfolios to reflect the new reality. They will sell billions of overseas assets, then watch. They may buy back some based on unexpected strength. They may sell off more after seeing further decline on market share of XYZ foreign equity.
Many amateurs and shitty brokers, who have no business trading stock, will panic and drag the market down further. It’s worth noting in 2008/09, amateur day traders did better than professionals in many cases.
But the coolest heads on Wall Street right now are quietly BUYING. This is a temporary downturn. The market WILL come back. The coolest of heads are going to make a killing as the first two groups come back into the market. If Trump is using the tariffs to create real free trade on the back end, they’ll all make money, a lot of it.
What is Trump’s game?
We don’t know yet. We’ve heard him speak enthusiastically about countries offering zero for zero on tariffs. We also heard Trump say the Tariffs will be a source of revenue for the government to pay down debt and possibly replace taxes. If zero barrier, free trade is the goal, GREAT! We’ll get there pretty quick and all the smart countries will benefit. Consumers will benefit the most. If his goal is the latter - revenue - we WILL end up in a tariff war and after a ridiculous pissing contest, we will return to a world not unlike the one we were in before the first tariff was laid on by the US. All consumers will be poorer for it. We will have accomplished exactly nothing. That’s how all tariff wars end.
My Alternative
I have criticized every pundit and knucklehead, who have gotten the vapors over the Trump tariffs, for not having an alternative to offer. So it is incumbent upon me to provide one. And I can!
For the hardcore P4B fan, this will not be a new concept. IF YOU WANT FREE TRADE, SIMPLY INSIST ON FREE TRADE. And then be prepared to carry it out yourself. And this goes to subsidies as well. You announce by a date certain that all foreign goods being sold in the United States will have no barriers in place upon them. All good we export will not be subject to barriers of any kind. That’s no tariffs on things coming in and no subsidies on goods going out. No exceptions. Watch out sugar industry! Stand by oil industry!
A subsidy is the mirror image of a tariff and an abuse of the end user. Does China want to sell us middling computer chips and medicine bottles, fine! Bring it. And our wheat will pour into your country unabated. If any country has a problem with that, okay. We feel ya. But you’ve sold your last widget in the USA!
You can make it easy on them as well. Give them a year to wind down their tariff and subsidy programs so their markets and manufacturers can adjust. Now we have a global FREE market based on REAL economics, not the market manipulation and political chicanery we call economics today.
Oh, but MJ! What about quality? What about countries that use pesticides or GMO or cheap rubber…blah, blah, blah…. Right. Shop for the alternative. Buy quality. And good luck with the pesticide thing. Expensive, mushy, wormy food isn’t my idea of good eatin’.
And guess what, boys and girls! We’d still have a trade deficit with just about every country, because we’d still be the richest country with the most consumption on the planet. It comes with the territory.
But consumers would pay what a thing is actually worth in a competitive market - no surcharge, no discount, unless the retailer is running a sale. We can’t ask for more. And we shouldn’t.
