Before departing from New York City to Colombia in late February, Omar Watson made a solemn promise to his mother. Just moments prior to entering a rideshare vehicle bound for the airport, they embraced in the kitchen of their Brooklyn residence. She reiterated her sole request for him whenever he traveled.

I told him, Omar, if nothing else, make sure every time you get into your Airbnb at night, you message me and say, Mommy, I’m OK, Hyacinth Watson recounted to CNN. He assured her he would comply.

After his first full day in Bogotá on February 24, her 31-year-old son sent her a message. He continued to check in on the second and third days. However, on the fourth night, he failed to reach out, prompting her to call him instead.

That conversation marked the last time she heard his voice. On the afternoon of February 29, less than 48 hours after their call, Omar Watson was discovered deceased in the bathroom of his Airbnb.
