Supply chains are also in the news globally at this time with the keen focus on the roll-out of the various COVID vaccines all across the world.

Another crucial element of global supply chains over the last 20 years or so has been the growing role of China and its transformation into the factory of the world and a lynchpin of many global supply chains - remember the PPE scramble in spring 2020? We are going to hear a lot about supply chains in 2021, not least because they will be swinging into action around the world in the roll-out of the various COVID vaccines that are being approved.

On top of that they are an essential concern of the sustainability agenda of international businesses as they, their customers and their investors become ever more sensitive to the environmental impact of their activities.

Supply chains will also be heavily impacted here in northwestern Europe in the countries that trade most with the UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland and of course the UK itself, when the UK Brexit transition period ends at the end of the month, whether there is a deal or no deal.

    • Mark Wolf, CEO of LavaFish Advisors, a consultancy specialised in helping businesses address their sustainability ambitions based in New York City.
