The idea of hell as eternal conscious torment didn’t dominate Christianity from the beginning—it developed over time.

In the earliest centuries, many influential Christian thinkers—like Origen and Gregory of Nyssa—taught forms of restoration or purification, where God’s judgment was ultimately healing, not endlessly punitive.

The shift began in the late 4th and early 5th centuries, especially through the influence of Augustine of Hippo. Writing in Latin (rather than Greek), Augustine strongly argued that hell was eternal and unending for the wicked. Because of his immense influence in the Western Church, this view gradually became the dominant teaching.

By the Middle Ages, eternal hell was firmly established in Western Christianity, reinforced by church tradition, art, and preaching. Meanwhile, the Eastern Church retained more emphasis on mystery, purification, and God’s restorative justice.

In short: Hell became a dominant doctrine between the 4th–6th centuries, largely due to Augustine’s influence in the Western Church.

Throughout church history, Christians have held three primary views of hell: eternal punishment, annihilation, and ultimate restoration. Each finds support in Scripture and has been defended by sincere believers across the centuries.

But which view fully proclaims the victory of Christ over death, sin, and the devil? Which one truly reflects the grace and love revealed in Jesus?

In this episode, we explore these three perspectives and ask a deeper question—not just what is possible, but what is most consistent with the character of God as revealed in Christ.

You may have heard claims that ancient religions had “dying and rising gods,” or that stories of miraculous births existed long before Jesus. The argument usually goes something like this: since similar stories existed earlier, the story of Jesus Christ must have been copied from them.

But when we look closely at the historical evidence, the claim does not hold up.

First, it’s important to understand that Christianity did not arise in a mythological culture detached from history. It emerged within Second Temple Judaism, a tradition deeply rooted in history, Scripture, and strict monotheism.

The earliest followers of Jesus were Jews who believed strongly in the God of Israel and rejected pagan mythology. These were the same people who preserved the Hebrew Scriptures and fiercely resisted adopting pagan religious ideas.

The idea that they would suddenly invent a pagan-style myth about their Messiah runs directly against the worldview they held.

Let’s also look at the historical context. The life and execution of Jesus are not only recorded in the New Testament. They are also acknowledged by non-Christian historians.

My story.... For over 30 years, I held to the view of eternal conscience hell. I wasn’t passive in that belief. I was all in. I provided Pastoral care at a Church of five thousand members and worked with many Evangelism Ministries worldwide. I wrote "Hell" sermons for pastors. I poured my heart into evangelism. I believed, like Jonathan Edwards, that eternity hung in the balance and that fear saved souls. I wasn’t intimidated by the weight of that message, I carried it boldly, convinced I was defending truth.

But then something unexpected happened. God began to transform me. This journey led me to what is often called Patristic Universalism (a term that was not used until after the publication of the book Patristic Universalism). In this episode I share how a committed evangelist, shaped by decades of eternal conscious torment theology, was transformed into someone who now sees the heart of God through a different lens. I invite you to listen, share and follow our podcast.

The Restoration view is one that some early Church Fathers held. Today we’re taking a closer look at the Lake of Fire—one of the most misunderstood images in Scripture.

Is it endless torment… or something deeper?

“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life." John 5:24The soul of man was not created for darkness,
nor fashioned for separation,
nor destined for decay.

It was formed for light.

For there is One who is called Light—
and not merely light as we perceive it,
but the true and living Light,
of whom it is written:

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”

This Light is none other than Christ,
the Wisdom and Word of God,
through whom all things were made,
and toward whom all things are drawn.

Consider, then, the nature of the soul.

It is not satisfied by shadows.
It is not nourished by illusions.
Even when it turns toward lesser things,
it does not cease longing for what is eternal.

For the soul, having come from God,
retains within itself a memory—
faint though it may be—
of divine goodness.

Why then does it wander?

Why does it cling to that which cannot give life?

It is not because it was made for such things,
but because it has become accustomed to them.

Just as eyes long kept in darkness
fear the brightness of the sun,
so too the soul, having grown used to lesser lights,
hesitates before the radiance of truth.

Yet the Light does not withdraw.

The Word of God, in His great mercy,
has entered even into the depths of human weakness.

He has taken on flesh,
not to condemn the soul for its wandering,
but to call it back.

In this episode: Rediscovering the Early Christian Hope

The debate over eternal punishment versus restoration is not simply a modern controversy. It reflects two different streams within Christian history.

One stream, strongly shaped by Augustine, came to dominate the Western church.

The other stream—represented by theologians like Origen and Gregory of Nyssa—held onto a hope that God’s redemptive work in Christ would ultimately bring healing and reconciliation to all creation.

Exploring these early traditions invites modern Christians to reconsider an important question:

If the gospel proclaims the victory of Christ over sin and death, what does that victory ultimately look like?

For many early Greek-speaking Christians, the answer was clear: God’s love will ultimately triumph, restoring what sin has broken and bringing creation back into harmony with its Creator.

David and Wendy discuss the purpose of evangelism and why it remains central to the Christian faith. Drawing from Wendy’s 25 years of experience working in evangelistic ministry—including with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association crusades, Need Him Global, and Fish the Net Ministries—she shares insight into how the gospel is meant to invite people into a restored relationship with God.

Through the perspective of Patristic Universalism, evangelism is not driven by fear, but by love. Its purpose is reconciliation: calling people to experience transformation now, to become a new creation in Christ, and to walk in the peace that comes from being restored to God. David and Wendy explore how sharing the gospel is ultimately about inviting people into the life of God and the healing of the human heart. In this episode, we explore the true purpose of evangelism through the lens of Patristic Universalism. Evangelism is not about fear, coercion, or escaping punishment—it is about inviting people into a restored relationship with God. The message of the gospel is the good news that through Christ, humanity is being reconciled to God and called into transformation.

The early Church understood salvation as more than a future hope; it is a present reality where hearts are healed, lives are changed, and people begin walking in the peace of God. Evangelism becomes an invitation to experience that reconciliation now—to move from spiritual death into life, from brokenness into restoration.

Join us as we discuss how the gospel calls people not only to believe, but to be transformed into a new creation, living in the peace and love of God while participating in His ultimate plan to restore all things.

Conditionalism also known as Annhilation is gaining support, but is it truly the view that supports a victorious Savior, and victory over death?

The New Testament repeatedly proclaims that Christ came to defeat sin, death, and the devil. The gospel is not simply about rescue for a few—it is about the ultimate triumph of God over everything that has corrupted creation.

But when we examine some theological views about the final destiny of humanity, we have to ask whether those views truly reflect the victory that Scripture describes.

Two views often discussed are annihilationism and eternal conscious torment. While they differ in important ways, both share something in common—they ultimately leave death as a permanent outcome for part of humanity.

Annihilationism teaches that some people will ultimately cease to exist. In this view, God finally destroys the wicked, removing them from existence entirely.

Another traditional view, Eternal Conscious Torment, teaches that some will suffer eternally without end.

But when we step back and consider the gospel message, an important question arises:
If death continues forever for part of humanity—whether through annihilation or endless torment—has death truly been defeated?

The New Testament repeatedly declares that Christ came to conquer death itself.

We discuss and compare two very different views. Patristic Universalism and Unitarianism.

Patristic Universalism is not a modern theological innovation. It is rooted in the early church and arises from the writings and reflections of respected Christian theologians who lived in the first centuries after the apostles.

These early Christian thinkers upheld the core doctrines of the historic Christian faith. They affirmed the divinity of Jesus Christ, the Trinity, the incarnation, the death and resurrection of Christ, and the authority of Scripture. Their hope in the ultimate restoration of all things was not outside the Christian faith—it was a theological reflection on the victory of Christ.

Several early church fathers expressed this hope. Among them were Origen of Alexandria, Gregory of Nyssa, and Gregory of Nazianzus. These were not fringe thinkers. They were leaders in the early church who helped shape Christian theology.

For example, Gregory of Nyssa, who was a major defender of the Trinity, spoke of God's redemptive purpose ultimately healing creation. In his writings he expressed hope that God's goodness would finally overcome all evil.

This belief was not based on philosophy alone—it was rooted in Scripture.

Listen to the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 4:10:

"For to this end we labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe."

Paul also writes in Colossians 1:19–20:

"For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross."

And in 1 Corinthians 15:22–28 we see the sweeping vision of Christ’s victory:

"For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive… Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father… that God may be all in all."

Patristic Universalism takes passages like these seriously. It asks whether the redemptive work of Christ might ultimately accomplish what Scripture declares—that Christ truly is the Savior of the world.

It is also important to recognize that the early fathers who held this hope fully upheld the foundational doctrines of Christianity.
