  • American Craft Podcast Launches (and I helped)!
Over the past year Sarah Rachel Brown has been collaborating with American Craft Magazine to bring the Object As... Project from the pages of the magazine to your podcast feeds. The first episode launches APRIL 15th through the American Craft Podcast feed. Enjoy this sneak peak into what the project entails and subscribe now to American Craft Podcast.
    Object As...
Objects speak to our current cultural, political, societal, environmental, and social climates. Objects can serve as a form of resistance, as commentary on today’s world’s issues. Objects can be acts of rebellion, civic disruption, and speak to the future. Objects can create new conversations.
Six artists were commissioned to create an object to carry ideas that are relevant to them today. Through one-on-one interviews with host Sarah Rachel Brown, you will hear each artist speak to how these objects came into being and what they mean to the maker.
This project is just one part of a larger effort to use our organization's platforms and channels of communication to help illuminate and dismantle systemic racism, oppression, global warming, political issues, and continue exploring how the practices of craft can help build a better world for everyone.
    Let the conversations begin!

  • Part-time to Ownership: Jessica Armstrong of Pistachios

    PISTACHIOS NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!

In 2021, Jessica, the gallery’s owner, made the decision to run as a fully virtual gallery, closing the downtown Chicago location until a new space will be found.

to help her get back on track and to reopen a new Chicago location, she’s currently in the process of trying to get a grant through the COVID Rescue Fund.

You can show the gallery support by making a minimum donation of $5 HERE.

    More about COVID Rescue Fund:

The Covid Rescue Fund awards grants up to $100,000 based on a monthly vote and the finances of the business that the applicant lost.  Grants are awarded monthly.  To maximize a business’ chances of getting the grant, they need as many people to vote on their behalf as possible.

As this podcast is being released, I am very excited to announce that the voting for the month of May is closed and Pistachios is one of the businesses that will be awarded a grant.

What Pistachios needs now is donations because the grant matches the money the small business is able to secure whether that be through loans or donations.

The Fulcrum Project residency brought together active participants in the craftscape with eight residents who have been made vulnerable due to the high-risk they experience resulting from poverty and other structural forms of oppression and repression further emphasized due to the pandemic. With this project, the aim is to support residents with professional development as well as exposing residents to the multiplicity of possibilities that exist within a craft discourse. The outcome will be to give residents better tools and information on opportunities and structures to support young careers, while providing unrestricted financial support. Building upon the expertise and pool of knowledge of the presenters, the Fulcrum Project residency  provides residents with diverse and valuable resources, varying from practical and foundational proffesionalization strategies - such as bio, cv writing, portfolio compiling,... -, to more advanced conceptual discussions. As a result, residents gain [or improve existing] skills with which they will be able to use or subvert as they will have gained a better understanding of possibilities to make decisions with more rounded understanding of unconventional possibilities and paths to build a practice.  This format is inspired by Felipe Castelblanco’s parasitic university program, and shares an interest in using institutional resources to better a community at large.
