  • Josh Caterer (Smoking Popes)

Josh Caterer is our guest. And he’s got quite a story. He started a band with two brothers which became the Smoking Popes. They decided to let Josh sing because he was the best at singing and playing while not looking at his hands. They quickly went from recording 18 songs in a day to opening for bands like Green Day. There’s a funny story about that. But with all that success came a pretty big fall in the form of a cocaine overdose. Josh survived and found a new purpose in his Faith. But trying to integrate that into his music was a challenge. After forming Duvall, forming his occasional blues band Jackson Mud, and then returning to Smoking Popes, Josh is releasing a new live solo album. It’s a mix of Popes songs and cover songs. Pick up physical copies from Pravda Records or digitally on Bandcamp. Follow Josh @joshcaterer. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. We accept coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. I hope you enjoy Josh Caterer on Performance Anxiety part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

  • Rob Marshall (Humanist, Mark Lanegan)

I’ve mentioned this list I made early on of “unicorn” guests. Well today I get to check another one off the list. Rob Marshall is one of the most incredible people I’ve had on this show. He’s an amazing guitarist, but more importantly, he’s a great human. He began making walls of sound with Lyca Sleep & Exit Calm. When that period ended, he began writing for & with Mark Lanegan, culminating in the his project called Humanist. And that album is a masterpiece. If you haven’t heard it, stop this podcast and listen to it. Seriously. I get some great behind-the-scenes stories of how it all came together; like how the centerpiece of the album is a 9 minute improv with otherworldly vocals. Follow Rob @HUMANIST on social media. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Support us with a cup of coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. And now I’m truly honored to welcome Rob Marshall to Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Tim Foljahn has had a very interesting career. He’s worked with Steve Shelly, Lee Ranaldo, and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. He’s toured extensively with Jad Phair, Half Japanese, Cat Power; Thurston Moore, Townes Van Zandt, and others. He’s been in a TV band called Side Boob on Orange Is The New Black. He’s pursuing a Master’s degree in psychoanalysis. AND...he has a new album coming out. It’s called I Dreamed A Dream and it’ll throw some of the coolest curveballs at you. • Benjamin Wright (Benjamin Jayne)

Benjamin Wright joins us on Performance Anxiety. And I’m going to stay in touch with him because in addition to being a musician, he’s a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. He’s releasing his second album with his sister Amanda, under the band name Benjamin Jayne. Benjamin lives in Vermont but Amanda lives in Barcelona. Spain. Not New York. So the pandemic rally didn’t change how they wrote music. In fact, their first album was really just an exercise in staying in touch. The new album is a step forward in every respect. Benjamin explains how his music is really something he has to do, not something he wants to do. And being in psychiatry, he knows how important creative outlets are. Give them a follow on social media. All their links are on their website benjaminjayne.com and you can order their album there as well. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Rate & review the shows! We accept coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. And you know, sometimes a podcast is just a podcast. But not this time. Enjoy Benjamin Wright of Benjamin Jayne on Performance Anxiety, part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

  • Elizabeth McCullough & Jamal Hassan (Alpha Cat & Kid Anansi)

This is an interesting episode. We have a previous guest returning with a new guest. We have a singer/songwriting and a poet/comedian/rapper. We are joined by Elizabeth McCullough, also known as Alpha Cat and Jamal Hassan, who raps under the name Kid Anansi

We talk about the two sides of Jamal’s poetry. One of the worst experiences he’s witnessed at a poetry event. What inspired and continues to inspire him to write. How he’s been working on his poetry during the pandemic and how the UK’s art has suffered as an export.

Elizabeth’s remastered the Alpha Cat album Pearl Harbor. Incredibly, all the files were lost. Luckily she had copies of the premasters to work with. She tells us the wild story behind the album’s bonus tracks and the effect art can have on people.

We also hear how they met and began working together and Jamal’s upcoming album. How he got over his anxiety about rapping. How food influences everything. Follow Alpha Cat & Kid Anansi on social media. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on Twitter & IG. You can get us a cup of coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is available at performanceanx.threadless.com. Rate & review our episodes. We now join our conversation with Elizabeth McCullough & Jamal Hassan already in progress on Performance Anxiety part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

  • Richard Black (Shark Island)

I know I’ve mentioned that when I starting thinking about doing this podcast, I had a top ten list of guests I wanted to have. Some were obvious and others less so. This one is one of the top three. Richard Black is the singer for the band Shark Island. They played in the LA area beginning in the late 70’s through to the early 90’s. They released one major label album and a handful of songs on soundtracks. But that was it. Richard fronted the short lived hard rock supergroup Contraband and then left music completely. But after finding a new passion in metal sculpture, Shark Island has returned with 2 studio albums and one live release.

Richard is very candid with me and we spent a long time discussing his careers; setting bars low to avoid disappointment; watching grunge change the musical landscape, particularly in LA;demoing songs with Skid Row as his backing band, and recording in 432 instead 440. Check out the music at sharkislandmusic.com and follow their socials. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Please rate & review. You can buy us a coffee @ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch designed by Mark Dancey of Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger fame is at performanceanx.threadless.com. Let’s dive into Richard Black of Shark Island on Performance Anxiety, part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

  • Keith Kenny

Keith Kenny is a one man band. But not the kind with an accordion and cymbals on his knees. He does use a suitcase as a drum, but more on that later. He's known for his multiple extended and varied sets. I mean how many people do you know who can pull off a one man, acoustic based Tool medley? His new album Lifetimes Ago Motel is out after a six month delay. But it's well worth the wait. Follow him on social media. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Buy us a coffee at ko-fi.com/perfomanceanxiety. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. Rate & review us! Now let's catch up with Keith Kenny on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

  • Christopher Harold Wells (The Neverlutionaries)

Christopher Harold Wells joins us on this episode. Growing up, his house was full of music and sports. His dad was a linebacker for the Eagles. But Christopher’s passion was music. He’s jammed with some incredible people like Lauryn Hill & Bubba Sparxxx. He’s released an album under the name The Neverlutionaries and it’s a wonderful mix of genres and styles. The album was recorded at Hyde Studios and was produced by Jamison Durr, who’s produced albums by Sammy Hagar, Wyclef Jean, & Joe Satriani. The album features performances by guitarist Kenny Olson (Bootsy Collins, Sheryl Crow), drummers Chris McGrew and Nick Baglio (Gucci Mane) and guitarist Jonnie Axtell (Psychefunkapus). Follow Christopher and The Neverlutionaries on social media. They should be easy to find. Pick up the self titled album. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Buy us a coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Give us a review wherever you listen. Pick up merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Now let’s slide right into this discussion with Christopher Harold Wells on Performance Anxiety, part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

  • Laura Carbone

This week Laura Carbone joins us from Berlin. She’s released a Live album, Live at Rockpalast that’s the closest thing to a live show we’ve had in over a year. Why? Because it’s a live album with absolutely no overdubs or corrections. We talk about how an accidental gift of Nirvana’s Nevermind changed her musical perspective, causing her to put down her flute and pick up a guitar. She also talks about why she used demo vocals in the final mix of an album to get a true take over a polished one. And I wanted her to explain the differences between European and US audiences. Follow her on social media. Pick up Live at RockPalast on Bandcamp. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Give us a review and help us rise on the charts. There’s merch designed by Mark Dancey of Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger fame on performanceanx.threadless.com. Or treat us to a cup a coffee on ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Now let’s join the conversation with Laura Carbone on Performance Anxiety on Pantheon Podcasts.
