We’re joined by author Robert Duncan. He’s led a pretty rock & roll life. He saw the Beatles live, walked out of The Who on their first US tour, & played “22” with Mitch Ryder. One of his first writing assignments was interviewing KISS the same day Paul Stanley got his infamous rose tattoo.
He became the first managing editor at Creem Magazine, working with the legendary Lester Bangs and wrote the first ever unauthorized biography of KISS. His amazing story of how he met his wife led to his honeymoon with Blue Oyster Cult. And he’s also serenaded Sammy Hagar & Liza Minelli.
Go buy his novel, Loud Mouth. It’s hard to put down. Follow him on the socials to get news on his new books & possible movie. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Let’s welcome drummer Andrew Toy to the Performance Anxiety family. He’s played in so many genres of music that I lost count. He likes to use music genres like chords; building one on top of another to create something unique. And it began by playing on a cruise ship! Now he’s got a solo album out that is full of experimental percussion. And it’s a true solo album. He plays everything. It’s called Guardrails and you really need to check it out at andrewtoy.net or @atoydrummer on social media.
Check this podcast out @PerformanceAnx.
You can buy us a coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety.com.
Merch is available at performanceanx.threadless.com.
So let’s give a Performance Anxiety welcome to Andrew Toy.

Dale Crover joins us. You may remember him from one of his many bands: The Melvins, Altamont, Redd Kross, or maybe The Dale Crover Band, who are releasing a new album. If you’re not familiar with Dale’s solo music, it’s definitely a separate entity from The Melvins. But Dale tells some great stories about Gene Simmons & KISS, meeting Buzz, playing biker sleepover parties as a teen, & Greg Bissonette. He’s also done a little acting. He played both young AND old Neil Young in the Harvest Moon video. There’s a few great stories about that experience too. A quick disclaimer, though. There was a not unusual buffering issue when we recorded. So occasionally Dale may sound like he’s talking a little fast. That’s the buffering. Follow Dale @drcrover on social media. Buy his album, Rat a Tat Tat!. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Buy us coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Please enjoy Dale Crover on Performance Anxiety, won’t you?

Today’s guest may have the hardest last name to pronounce. Christian Kjellvander joins us to discuss his new album, About Love and Loving Again. But first we have to figure out how he got there. His career started as a Swedish slacker. But he soon realized how much he loved creating music. That’s when his sound changed. His bass voice combined with the Americana vibe of the music is familiar but he likes to throw listeners some curveballs, like recording a doom country album with Tonbruket. He also had to race home while on tour when COVID began closing borders across Europe.
Christian’s new album is perfect for driving at night. It’s a very loose album and one of my favorites of 2020. Give him a follow on social media. Pick up the new album wherever you buy music. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Subscribe, rate, review. Consider spotting us a cup of coffee on ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. So let’s dive into this episode with Christian Kjellvander on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

I’d like to welcome Peter Milton Walsh of The Apartments to the show. Peter’s life has been full of triumphs and unimaginable tragedy. He survived the drug fueled 70’s Brisbane music scene and moved on to the form the band The Apartments. He moved to New York for a fresh start and then relocated to England where he signed to Rough Trade. After his first a couple of EP’s and a full length album, he found a coveted spot on the soundtrack for the John Hughes film, Some Kind of Wonderful. But in 1997, Peter’s son, Riley, was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disorder. In 1999, at 3 years and 8 months of age, Riley lost his battle and Peter stepped away from music. Sixteen years later, Peter was convinced to give music another go. He’s been playing and writing ever since. The band is strong & the music is honest, just like the man who wrote it. His new album In and Out of the Light saw Peter trying new techniques with wonderful results. Check out the album wherever you buy music or at https://www.theapartments-music.com/ or on their Facebook page. Follow us @PerformanceAnx & maybe buy us a coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety.com. So let’s get right into Peter Milton Walsh on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Welcome to a very special episode of Performance Anxiety. Today we tackle a very sensitive subject: The defense of hair metal. No other podcast will touch this volatile topic. But we here at Performance Anxiety, a proud member of the Pantheon Podcast Network, are willing to traverse the minefield that is hair metal. We tangle with topics like the best hair metal for the gym; What hair metal band will clear out a wedding; and is there a new batch of hair metal bands emerging? But we start the entire show off by teasing out a top three list of hair metal bands from our panel of experts: Jason Tompson of Vast Robot Armies, Ryan Smith of Ryan & Pony and Soul Asylum, and Mike Hsu of 100FM The Pike in Worcester, Mass & the Long May You Young podcast on the Pantheon Podcast Network. Follow all of us on social media (you’re obviously intelligent enough to find the accounts), & think about supporting us at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. There’s no gentle way to start this conversation, so let’s rip off the band-aid In Defense of Hair Metal!

This was such a cool episode. First of all, I’ve got my new mate Spencer Cullum co-hosting with me. But just as exciting is my guest B.J. Cole. B.J. has played on some of the most loved albums of all time. He’s played with Elton John, Sting, T. Rex, Bjork, Gerry Rafferty, Robert Plant, Richard Ashcroft, & The Verve.
He & Spencer talk about how the role of pedal steel is changing, even in Nashville and their scariest moment on stage (and it’s basically the same moment for all pedal steel players). At one point we’re even joined by Spencer’s dogs. Follow Spencer & B.J. on social media. Check out BJ’s new album of Hawai’ian music and Spencer’s solo album, Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection. Follow us all on social media. Subscribe, rate, & review. It’s a huge help! And don’t forget ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Now let’s slide into this chat with Spencer Cullum & B.J. Cole on Performance Anxiety.

This is a weird episode. It’s all about music and the paranormal. But the really weird part is the panel I’ve put together. I’m joined by former guest Morgan Geer of Drunken Prayer, first time guest Josh Moss of The Modern Folk, & my daughter Maggie. We discuss Mothman, Bigfoot, ghosts & their loopholes, & the music written about them. I would love you guys to check Drunken Prayer & The Modern Folk on bandcamp. Drunken Prayer has a great Christmas single out now & you can pick up The Modern Folks’ entire discography (all 22 releases) for $5.
This show was a lot of fun. A little silly, a little serious, and a lot strange. If you enjoy this podcast, consider treating us to a cup of coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety.com There’s no commitment. I hope you enjoy this episode. If not, keep an eye out for the men in black, because I know they’re fans.

Welcome Sarah Safaie & Evan Taylor to the show. Together they are Purple Witch of Culver. They’re an experimental, jazz, electro funk duo with an infusion of poetry. Sarah tells me that one of her musical influences is Lisa Simpson and Evan’s parents have an unusual way of showing their support for his choice of career. Oh, and Evan’s mom calls in the middle of the podcast. The duo has three singles out right now and they’re like nothing else that’s come out in 2020. The sound is a mix of vintage electronics & St. Mark’s Poetry Project. Check out the music on bandcamp or through streaming services. Follow them on social media to find out about upcoming releases. They’re planning on one per month. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Subscribe, rate, & review. And if you like the episodes, consider saying thanks with a cup of coffee. We’ll pass it around! You can do it once with no commitment. Now let’s get things going with Purple Witch of Culver on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.
