October 26, 2023SEPTA driver shot and killed in Germantown on 23 bus route
The KYW Newsradio All-Local - Thursday, October 26, 2023 (Evening Edition):
A SEPTA bus driver was shot and killed in Germantown Thursday morning. Police say a female passenger opened fire on the Route 23 bus. There were other passengers on the bus at the time of the shooting, but they were not harmed.
Mayoral candidates Cherelle Parker and David Oh generally agree that more police are key to fighting Philadelphia’s violent crime problem, but slight differences became evident in the one face-to-face debate of their campaigns, here at KYW Newsradio.
Members of the Air National Guard based in Atlantic City were sent to the Middle East along with a squadron of F-16 fighter jets. They join a few other squadrons of aerial combat aircraft, in addition to intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets.
The Prince of Monaco was in West Philadelphia on Thursday to observe the Philadelphia Zoo's educational programs. The prince saw other ambassador animals, including Rowan the Hawk, inside KidZooU and lions, Makini and Tajiri overhead in the Zoo360 trail.

The KYW Newsradio All-Local on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023 (midday edition):
In the debate between the candidates for mayor of Philadelphia, Democrat Cherelle Parker and Republican David Oh, gun violence was a major topic. Both candidates agreed that there should be stricter enforcement of lower-level crimes.
Parker said her plan for year-round school is about making sure students have access to every tool they need to be successful. Oh said he wouldn't send his kids to a year-round school because he wants them to have time with their family and for religious education.
A Philadelphia police officer's right to stop and frisk people suspected of having a weapon is a point of contention for candidates Oh and Parker. Oh said stop-and-frisk, or Terry stops, is a tool that can only be used when justified. Parker voiced her support for Terry stops.
The proposed Sixers arena was also a hot topic. Both candidates said they need to see more data on the potential impact of the structure in Chinatown.
The issue of school choice and charter schools has been front and center in the debate over education in that city. Oh says he wants to ensure every child has access to good schools, but strong public schooling is fundamental to that. Parker touted her background as a product of the city's public school system. She says she wants to foster collaboration to dispel the narrative of charters versus public schools.

A West Virginia man has been found guilty in Montgomery County of two counts of third-degree murder for killing a pregnant woman and her unborn in a deadly crash last summer.
New Jersey on Wednesday defended its package of gun restrictions, which includes a ban in sensitive spaces, in federal court. The judges are now considering the arguments.
A program at the Camden County Jail to help people suffering from opioid addiction is being celebrated as a national model. A new report finds the plan is working. The medication for the program was unveiled in 2018, and it’s undergone several updates since then.

It was a frustrating night at the ballpark for the Phillies, who were unable to clinch the pennant and now face a winner-take-all situation with Arizona.
The final suspect wanted for last year’s shooting outside Roxborough High School was arrested on Monday afternoon in Germantown after being on the run for more than a year.
There’s just about a week left in the contract between SEPTA and its largest union, so the two sides have convened to hash out a new agreement. Far more than wages and benefits are on the table.
A special program in Delaware County has mental health experts and law enforcement working side by side. Officials are looking at the program’s early progress as they discuss what steps they should take next.

Tonight is the 40th postseason game in the history of Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies are 28-11 in playoff games at the ballpark. If they beat the Diamondbacks tonight, Rob Thomson's Phils will repeat as National League Champions.
A third person is confirmed dead from the fiery fuel tanker crash in Montgomery County on Saturday. None of the victims' identities has been released yet.
After six weeks without a contract, the Philadelphia Orchestra's musicians and their management have agreed to a new deal.
Tonight is the first public viewing for Richard Mendez, the Philadelphia cop who was killed in the airport parking garage. The viewing will be at the Givnish Funeral Home in the Northeast. It's scheduled to go from 5:30 to 8:30.
