A 12-year-old is in stable condition after getting shot. Police say it happened after 8 p.m. Monday near Eighth Street and Linley Avenue. Josh Shapiro will be sworn in as Pennsylvania's 48th governor Tuesday on a stack of three Hebrew Bibles: one from the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, where a gunman killed 11 people in 2018; a family Bible, which he's used for every swearing-in since 2005; and a Bible carried by a Philadelphia soldier in World War II.Ever since the building boom began in Philadelphia two decades ago, city officials have tried to address a major downside of construction: the total closure of sidewalks in pedestrian-heavy areas. Some of the measures brought temporary improvements, but inconvenient, and even hazardous, sidewalk closures continue to be a problem.The city marked Martin Luther King Day with the traditional bell-ringing ceremony at the Liberty Bell. Government leaders and citizens gathered to reflect on King’s legacy.
