ST. JAMES — A signature win. That’s what the Pipestone Area Schools volleyball team earned during the St. James Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20, from the St. James Event Center. During pool play, the Arrows downed previously undefeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in three sets by scores of 13-25, 25-23, 15-13. “Like Windom and Canby, they didn’t allow the ball to drop,” said PAS first-year head coach Shelly Hennager about BLHS. “We rose to the occasion, and showed we were able to compete at a higher level.” The victory, in turn, made the crossover championship match versus Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton somewhat anticlimactic. The Arrows...

BURNSVILLE — Russell-Tyler-Ruthton middle blocker Ava Karbo was named to the all-tournament team based on her performance at the Midwest Warehouse Tournament Saturday afternoon. Karbo, and the rest of the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association Class A fourth-ranked Knights, claimed the Silver Division title by sweeping No. 5 Class A MACCRAY, 25-22, 25-19 in the bracket championship. “Ava stepped up as a true senior leader from creating energy on and off the court,” RTR head coach Daynica Brown said, “to her play from her aggressive hitting.” Brown said Karbo also transformed herself into a wall — with three key solo ace...

LAKE BENTON — In the late-2000s, Lake Benton made the decision to begin sending middle and high school students across state lines from Minnesota to South Dakota. However, Lake Benton Gymnasium still serves as host site for one volleyball match per season. "The gym is much smaller, which makes it far louder," ELB head coach Mikaela Hoeke said. "It's difficult to adjust to court awareness when the gymnasium size changes." Players from both teams also adjusted to a lower ceiling, which the coach commented can become an issue. Last Thursday, Sept. 18, De Smet needed four sets to beat ELB...

The Class AA No. 1 ranked Jackson County Central football team came as advertised in last Friday’s game at the Paulsen athletic complex. Most everyone talks about how prolific the offense is. But, what about that defense, too? The Huskies held the Arrows to just 46 total yards of offense in a 48-6 conquest. “They play fast and physical,” PAS head coach Scott Boomgaarden noted. Boomgaarden said the Arrows had “opportunities to move ball,” but it never quite materialized. Jackson County Central stopped one possible drive on an Isaac Hesebeck interception. Other times, quarterback Austin Musch had the ball sail...

EDGERTON — A goal-line stand in the second quarter propelled Edgerton Public to a 24-0 victory over Adrian-Ellsworth on Friday, Sept. 19. Brady Jandl made a key stop on third down, and the team built an impenetrable fortress on fourth down — stopping Adrian-Ellsworth’s Jackson Jenniges short of the end zone. “It was a good test to have,” Jandl said in post-game comments on the Christensen Broadcasting streaming service. There was plenty of history entering this game. At one point, Edgerton and Ellsworth formed a coop for football. A-E shifted to the nine-player game this year. After the stand, Colin...

The Pipestone Area Schools’ girls tennis team honored its seven seniors before a Big South Conference match versus New Ulm. Arrows’ No. 2 singles player Ava Boucher, one of those seniors, play inspired early on in her match versus New Ulm’s Natalie Fischer. However, Fischer eventually won 7-5, 6-0. PAS head coach James Skyberg served as the master of ceremonies for the ‘Senior Day’ festivitives — with video on the Pipestone County Star’s Facebook page. “It’s a big deal for us every year,” Skyberg said of the ceremony.
