  • A new investigation is shedding light on the secret double life of Thomas Crooks, who tried to kill President Trump in Butler.
Thomas Crooks left no manifesto or explanation for why he tried to kill the former and future president in Butler a year ago. But a CBS News investigation is shedding light on his secret double life. Before Thanksgiving 2023, Thomas Crooks' online life was fairly routine for a 20-year-old. But the just-released investigation shows a plan for mass violence was brewing, and for it to succeed, Crooks had to compartmentalize his life. CBS reports that in the summer of 2023, Crooks bought a rifle from his dad and signed up for a membership at a shooting range. He became a regular at Clairton Sportsmen's Club, signing in to the rifle range more than 40 times in the last 11 months of his life. In the month before July 13th, Crooks researched the presidential candidates online more than 60 times. He visited the Butler Farm Show grounds in person on July 7th and searched for Butler Farm Show photos. The probe shows Crooks was planning an assassination, all while pursuing a career in engineering.

  • Six Secret Service agents have been suspended without pay for security failures led to deadly gunfire during the Trump rally in Butler.

Corey Comparatore was killed by a gunman on the roof of a nearby building and two other men were critically wounded. On the Big K Morning Show, Corey's sister, Kelly Meeder, shared her reaction on the timing of the suspensions.
Meeder also said it is unfair for the agents to return to their jobs when her brother will never come back. The special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh field office is one of the Secret Service employees being suspended and at least two agents are appealing.

The change is reportedly in effect at Baltimore/Washington, Fort Lauderdale, Cincinnati, Portland, Philadelphia, New York LaGuardia and LAX. We've reached out to Pittsburgh International for comment and are awaiting a response.

  • Reconstruction work shut down a major highway ramp this morning
Reconstruction work shut down a major highway ramp this morning. The exit to Route 8 north from Route 28 south near Etna closed at 6am and will remain closed around the clock through July 31 while crews reconstruct the exit ramp. The official detour tells drivers to stay on Route 28 south, exit at Millvale and reenter Route 28 going north. The project is located between Baker Street and the 62nd Street Bridge and will include milling and resurfacing, retaining wall repairs, and the installation of a barrier to separate travel lanes from a future shared-use path. The work is part of a $9 million project in Pittsburgh, Etna and Shaler that started in August 2024. The project is expected to end late this year. County Controller Corey O'Connor says Allegheny County spent 45 and a half million dollars more than it took in during Fiscal Year 2024....nearly double the amount from the year before. O'Connor says the current situation is unsustainable....even after County Council approved a millage increase that went into effect this year.

  • Pittsburgh Regional Transit has approved a budget calling for service cuts and a fare hike.
The PRT Board today approved its new budget....and the 539 million dollar spending plan includes the 35 percent service reduction and nine percent fare increase that had been the subject of multiple hearings. Those cuts may still be averted, though. PRT CEO Katherine Kelleman says the budget approved today is to meet a mandated deadline....and she remains hopeful that a long term solution could be in place. Transit funding is a key part of Governor Shapiro's budget proposal...including 40 million dollars for PRT. However, state lawmakers say the chances of getting the state's budget passed by Monday's deadline are slim to none. In part, because Harrisburg is trying to determine what it will be getting from Washington as the President's so called Big Beautiful Bill is still being considered by the Senate.
