Pittsburgh Steelers Podcast | Steel City Underground

Joe welcomes Mitchell Reese, the latest addition to the Steel City Underground team, to the show to discuss the backup running back situation in Pittsburgh. Many people already assume James Conner is the backup to starter Le’Veon Bell, but that may not hold true for a variety of reasons.

Joe and Mitch discuss those competing for the job, plus what last year’s backup, DeAngelo Williams, has been up to this offseason.

D-Will thinks he could still have a role somewhere, including with the Steelers, but he also discussed retirement and some teams he might not want to play for!

Today Brian and Joe tackle a topic that has nothing to do with what happens on the field: the speculation of “lists” like the NFL Top 100 and a recent Pro Football Focus ranking.

These lists are always subjective; and they don’t mean a thing. However, it’s important to analyze whether or not we should take them at face value. For example, is there really a better running back than Le’Veon Bell or a better wide receiver than Antonio Brown? How many quarterbacks should be ranked ahead of Ben Roethlisberger?

And what about Pro Football Focus ranking the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line behind one that has never played a snap together?

Making sense of this stuff isn’t easy, but the hosts will try their best!

Rookie tight end Phazahn Odom joins today’s program to talk about his experience so far with the Pittsburgh Steelers, including rookie minicamp and “football in shorts”.

We also learn a little bit about Phazahn’s nickname and something the 6-foot-8 athlete isn’t keen on doing as well!

If you haven’t seen or heard of Weslye Saunders in recent weeks you aren’t looking hard enough. With the #WhyNotWes campaign sweeping social media, we welcome the former Steelers and Colts tight end to the show to clear the air on what some feel are unconventional methods for drawing attention to teams potentially interested in his services.

While it’s not a traditional approach, the “Why Not Wes” campaign is also bigger than any one person; Saunders’ story is one of perseverance in the face of adversity and serves as a source of inspiration to never give up on your dreams.

Terry Fletcher is back again to join Joe Kuzma and talk about all of the various WTF stories which have transpired during the NFL offseason.

Some of those stories borderline on silly speculation while others focus on serious accusations.

No matter if it’s here nor there, the duo will respond with the usual three letters: WTF!

Back to football… football talk that is!

After a departure from the norm, we head in the other direction to discuss deals: who’s getting a new contract, who isn’t and which one(s) aren’t that big of a… deal? (Get it?)

Brian talks about the situations surrounding Le’Veon Bell, Alejandro Villanueva, and Stephon Tuitt; when, where, how, and why each player may, or may not, cash in during this offseason, and how every little “detail” has been blown out of proportion.

Steelers Nation, we need to step aside and share the spotlight for at least one episode as Joe talks about Pittsburgh being the “City of Champions”. That means discussing all things black and gold, and that would not be complete without including your reigning and defending, two-time, back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins!

Now, don’t you worry Steelers fans: there’s plenty of stuff here for you too. But today is a special episode which departs from “football in shorts” and wild speculation to talk about whether or not the city of Pittsburgh has the greatest sports teams, and if that could be a burden on those franchises.

And if so, does that raise the expectation for fans across all of the three major genres?

Don’t adjust your sets! This is a different show, albeit part two of examining the Steelers opening game roster.

This time Joe and Brian dig into the defense, to come up with a way too early projection of who will fall wear on the depth chart! It’s an early look, but as it stands, the duo warns fans to not expect a lot from this year’s rookie class: at least not early on.

As always, these sort of topics are generally impossible to predict so early in the offseason, but it is fun to think about!
