Pittsburgh Steelers Podcast | Steel City Underground

Cam Newton signs with the New England Patriots and for some reason, Steelers Nation keeps going bonkers about backup quarterbacks!

Stop it!

That’s what Joe Kuzma and Brian E. Roach are pleading fans to do on today’s episode, where everyone from Mason Rudolph, to Duck Hodges and Paxton Lynch, plus Newton, Colin Kaepernick, Jameis Winston and well, just drudge up a name and they can be Ben Roethlisberger’s backup because… the Steelers absolutely need one?

Right.

Tune in to hear why the 2019 season’s result was far from a couple of backup quarterback’s faults!

On the latest SCU podcast, Joe flies solo, answering a question he was asked, and addresses in an upcoming article on the website: which of the Pittsburgh Steelers games do you think would be the best to go to?

Picking out the best games to go to can be very subjective, especially at a time of the year where we’re unsure of how teams may pan out. However, Joe gives it a shot, going by potential matchups, previous storylines carrying over to this year, and the atmosphere surrounding the game.

With that in mind, tune in for some games every Steelers fan should pencil in on their calendar.

Joe and Brian are back during this “dead season” of June to talk about some Steelers history, based on a recent (and nearly yearly update) of Ed Bouchette’s articles on the same topic: who are some of the best free agent signings of the Kevin Colbert era?

Of course, the hosts couldn’t leave it at that, so expect a few more surprises – and no spoilers on who the worst are! (That will be coming later this week!)

Joe and Brian have some fun with the latest Steelers inspired podcast, this time taking a look at some legends, for better or worse, to have played under center in a Pittsburgh uniform.

Taking a mostly modern-era approach to the program, the hosts bring up names that many fans may have forgotten – and one that Brian most certainly doesn’t want to remember!

It’s a great look at how playing quarterback in the NFL is a difficult job even when you’re successful.

Joe and Brian tackle a new topic today: what might the Steelers 2020 training camp sessions look like?

The NFL sent out a memo last week “sending teams home” for their training camps and effectively ending a 52-year run at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania for the Steelers.

Now there’s rumblings that the team could take their camp to Heinz Field, but does that mean it’s open for fans? And what happens with the players? Do they get to sleep in their own beds or will they be camped elsewhere like the dormitories in Latrobe?

These questions and more are answered in the latest edition of the Steel City Underground Podcast.

Joe and Zach jump on the horn and take a look at how the Steelers 2019 season was impacted by injuries: not just overall, but from a week-to-week perspective.

Even the hosts, who are immersed in football 24/7, had forgotten the names of several players who received snaps on the Steelers offense last season!

Revisit each of these games with a new understanding of just what happened over the team’s 2019 campaign and how that didn’t help several players play up to their full potential, plus stick around for the most surprising statistic about the offense that you’ll only hear from Steel City Underground.

Some citizens of Steelers Nation just won’t get off the subject, so Joe and Brian are back on it too.

The discussion of the day revolves around backup quarterbacks, particularly those who have played behind Ben Roethlisberger: do we remember some as having better games, careers, and/or stats than the really had?

And what of being a passer in the NFL overall?

Drafting, signing or otherwise acquiring a quarterback doesn’t always translate to instant success. The hosts point out many examples of successes and failures with signal callers from around the league, including a specific focus inspired by a social media post which praised Michael Vick’s time as a Pittsburgh Steeler!
