  • 663: 91.06 Ayelet Fishbach -Glass half full or half empty
    NUGGET CONTEXT

Ayelet speaks about how we should think about “glass half full or empty” when it comes to motivating ourselves or others around us. Do we look at the ground we have traversed or the distance ahead? She speaks about the nuance involved here and when each of the approaches might make sense for us to motivate ourselves or others around us.

    GUEST

Ayelet Fishbach, Ph.D., is the Jeffrey Breakenridge Keller Professor of Behavioral Science and Marketing at the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business and the author of Get It Done: Surprising Lessons from the Science of Motivation. She is the past president of the Society for the Study of Motivation and the International Social Cognition Network. She is an expert on motivation and decision making.

In the podcast conversation, we start with her journey from the sharing economy of the Israeli Kibbutz which is based on the principles of equality, public ownership and voluntariness. From there she goes to the other extreme which is the University of Chicago which is all about Capital Markets and incentives drive human behaviour. We then dive into her recent book and talk about the various elements of motivation – how we think about goal setting, psychological reactance and what it can teach us about parenting, motivating ourselves during the long middle, mining the silent graveyard of failure, the power of joint goals as illustrated by Madame Curie and much more.

  • 663: 91.08 Ayelet Fishbach -Mining the silent graveyard
    NUGGET CONTEXT

Ayelet speaks about how there is much more information in failures and in us mining the graveyards of failure than trying to overanalyze the factors behind success. Her assertion is that there is greater heterogeneity in failure that leads to richer information that could be helpful than the relative homogeneity of successes. She also goes on to speak about how we think about sharing positive and negative feedback with people.

  • 662: 90.00 Alisa Cohn on her book - From Start-Up to Grown-Up
    GUEST

Alisa has been coaching startup Founders to grow into world-class CEOs for nearly 20 years. She has recently authored the book - From Start-Up to Grown-Up.

Alisa is a guest lecturer at Harvard and Cornell Universities, Henley Business School and the Naval War College. She serves on the board of the Cornell Advisory Council. Her articles have appeared in HBR, Forbes, and Inc and she has been featured as an expert on Bloomberg TV, the BBC World News and in the New York Times.

In our conversation, we spoke about how Start-up founders should police their passions, think about "giving away their Legos”, monitor their triggers, handle the Boards, transfer context when senior leaders come on Board and much more. Given my work with Founders, I have come to realize that this transition from a Founder to a CEO is like getting your Pilot training certification in your first and only flight where you are learning as you are learning to fly the plane.

  • 662: 90.01 Alisa Cohn - Triggers and Dopamine Hits
    NUGGET CONTEXT

Alisa speaks about how she gets every Founder to reflect on 4 things – Strengths, Development Areas, Triggers and Dopamine Hits. She goes on to expand on the notion of Triggers and Dopamine Hits and the implication of this on Leadership.

  • 662: 90.02 Alisa Cohn - Giving away your Legos
    NUGGET CONTEXT

Alisa speaks about the phenomenon where the Founder, as the company scales up, has to give away some part of the job that he or she really really enjoyed. As the company scales up the Founder often needs to get involved with the building of the company and not really the specific activity or function that really brought him or her energy. And that can be a non-trivial transition.

About Play to Potential Podcast

From the publisher's feed

This Podcast is created and curated by Deepak Jayaraman (an Executive Coach and a Leadership Advisor). He lives in Mumbai and works with successful Senior Executives by helping them play to their unique potential but with a sharp focus on transitions (business or career). Just like businesses need to think about "where to play" and "how to win", leaders need to be coherent about "where to go" and "how to grow" in their journeys. Deepak works with them during pivotal moments to help them with these two questions. To know more click here.
