Implementing Social and Emotional Learning in Physical Education Programs:A Panel Discussion with Inservice Practitioners 

Session Description: In this interactive session, a panel of practitioners who have experience and expertise related to implementing social and emotional learning in their own school environments will answer questions and provide advice for PETE.

All are welcome in the PETE Collaborative. We ask that all participants bear in mind the sense of community that we have striven to develop through the PETE collaborative. We hope to be able to discuss all topics, including problems and challenges, through the lens of opportunity and growth.

Dr. Murray Mitchell from the University of South Carolina discusses his co-authored chapter ‘Perspectives on the Future of Doctoral Programs’ published with Hal Lawson, Hans van der Mars, and Phillip Ward. The chapter brings an action-oriented analysis of doctoral programs for physical education teacher education programs. It is part of a special issue in JTPE.

David N. Daum, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at San Jose State University. His area of expertise includes physical education teacher education, curriculum design, assessment, and technology. He provides leadership in the physical education community related to online physical education with a multitude of presentations, publications and guideline documents. Dr. Daum’s research areas include K-12 blended and online physical education curricula, how that curricula is implemented and the impact of that curricula. In addition he is interested in how technology is defined and utilized in face-to-face classrooms and in the preparation of future teachers.

Laura is a Senior Lecturer within the Faculty of Education at Monash University, Australia, with her main responsibilities relating broadly to Health and Physical Education. Her research has inclusion and teacher professional learning as it's central threads. Recent publications have explored phenomena such as fitness testing as a context for learning, critical inquiry, and stereotypes in Physical Education.
