Architects should be well versed in public speaking as it is another tool that allows us to communicate our ideas to others. It allows us to reach out and inspire our clients and the general public. But we don’t always say the smartest things.
Eric and I discuss some popular (not necessarily in a good way) quotes that Architects said in 2014 based on an article published by Dezeen magazine. We’ve selected a couple of our favorites and discussed them in this episode.
“98 per cent of what gets built and designed today is pure shit” – Frank Gehry
“It’s not my duty as an architect to look at it” – Zaha Hadid
The building that Eric mentioned he loves: http://www.zaha-hadid.com/architecture/heydar-aliyev-centre/
One highlight of the year was Moshie Sadie:
“We are producing urban places which are disjointed and disconnected and not worthy of our civilisation” – Moshe Safdie
“The criteria for architecture after the tsunami is humbleness” – Kengo Kuma

We’ve all felt the urge at one time or another to say “screw this job I’m going out on my own.” But without a carefully laid out plan and clear vision of what lies ahead, we could be doomed before we get started. That’s why we interviewed Mark R. LePage, the Entrepreneur Architect to avoid all of those mistakes.
We’re joined by the Entrepreneur Architect, Mark R. LePage, to talk about the business of architecture and how Architects should think about the business side of things when setting up their practice. Whether you are studying for the Architect Registration Exam or a seasoned Architect, you’ll pick up some great practical advice and tips that you can use in developing your business strategy. You’ll also hear why Mark believes the idea of “entrepreneurship” is an important mindset to adopt for a successful practice.

The use of the term “Architect” has garnered a lot of attention lately. Some say it’s misused, others say Architects are too protective of the term and should focus on issues that matter.
We’ve put together a panel for today’s discussion including Stephen Hopkins, a recovering Architect, Brandon Kent, a designer in San Francisco, Evan Troxel, host of Archispeak Podcast, and our own Eric Corey Freed. We discuss Stephen and Brandon’s article called “Daniel Libeskind is No Architect.” We also discuss the legalities of practicing architecture and the perception of the word Architect in global marketplace.

There was an article published a few months ago called “Why I Left the Architecture Profession” that started a bit of controversy in the architecture community. Is there merit in the article? Or is it all hogwash?
We discuss the article written by Christine Outram that appeared in archdaily last fall called “Why I Left The Architecture Profession.” It created waves within the architectural community so much so, that Guy Horton, author of the Indicator Column at archdaily followed up with his own rebuttal a week later called “A Rebuttal to Why I Left the Architecture Profession.” Today, we are joined by Guy Horton to discuss the merits of Christine Outram’s article as well as his rebuttal and the reason he felt the need to respond.

We’ve all seen how Architects are portrayed by Hollywood, and in many cases it amounts to a superficial brush stroke at best. But is that the case for all of the portrayals?
In this episode, Eric and I discuss a few movies that feature Architects in starring roles and we also discuss whether the role of the Architect is central to the story.
Inception – 2010
Ellen Page – Architecture Student, not an Architect. She is the heroine and a powerful feminine roll. She is the glue that holds the extraction team together.
One Fine Day – 1996
HouseSitter – 1992
Death Wish – 1974
Indecent Proposal – 1993
The Towering Inferno – 1974
Sleepless in Seattle – 1993
The Fountainhead – 1949
Fear – 1996
