Don, his brother Max, junior, Duncan, and a couple more. The dad's name was Mac Sr. And the mom was Dorothy. They were all terrific folks, and I've lost touch with all of them, and that's my fault."

"And this book was so great, it inspired me, that once I finished it, I wanted to go and visit some of the places and follow in their footsteps as much as I could. And so I started this adventure near St. Louis at the mouth of the Missouri river, where they had camped before setting off. And they were traveling upstream on the mighty Missouri river. And it was very difficult, but their determination kept them going for months until they finally found the source of the Missouri river."

"And there was a breezeway probably 8ft across. And all you could see from our kitchen window was this other old brownstone apartment. And this particular window was wide open. And this nice old lady, probably 80 years old, was smiling. And she had a Hershey bar in her hand and she tossed it across between the buildings. And my mom caught it in her right hand and smoothly handed it down to me."

"Now I'm going to put a photograph here of her when she was a lighting person. And you can see she's wearing those heavy gloves because those lights were very hot. And later on she became a model. And then I showed up and messed up the whole thing and she became a mom. But she encouraged me as a child to be creative. She helped me set up a dark room, which was her idea. She knew about how to process film."

"I wanted to tell you about this bizarre dream I had last night. I hadn't spoken to or seen my old pal Donovan in decades. We were really close friends way back when. We even made a documentary film about motocross racing together when we were about 20 years old. Unfortunately, we simply lost touch over time. You know how life intervenes. I had gotten married to my sweetheart, and I was busy with work, and I failed to stay in touch with my old buddy Donovan."

"But he, from the time he was a young teenager, was in trouble and constantly being charged with crimes, spent time in prison. By the time these horrible events happened in 1969, he'd been in prison half his life. And frankly, when they tried to release him, he was incarcerated at prison in Los Angeles, and I think it was Terminal Island Prison. And he'd been a petty criminal. He'd been forging checks, stealing cars, things like that."

The great Director Bill Friedkin has passed away today.

William Friedkin, the Oscar winning director behind The French Connection and The Exorcist and many other films, was on my mind for some reason. And I started checking to see interviews on YouTube with him because he was a brilliant filmmaker. And I started to wonder, is he still around?"
