This week our special guest is contemporary romance author Suzanne Winslow. Suzanne has just released her debut book, Burned (Smoke and Fire Series Book 1). The book is very well written, and a sweet story about second chances and blended families.

This week our special guest is contemporary romance author Suzanne Winslow. Suzanne has just released her debut book, Burned (Smoke and Fire Series Book 1). The book is very well written, and a sweet story about second chances and blended families. Suzanne is a fairly new reader of J.D. Robb’s “In Death” series, but has some great insights to share!

We discuss how Eve and Roarke started their own families, first Roarke with Summerset, then Eve with Feeney and Mavis. Eve and Mavis’ relationship puzzles AJ…but it makes perfect sense to Suzanne. We all love Peabody, but who doesn’t? Jen feels like McNab is one of the most underrated characters of the series. Both Jen and Suzanne love Baxter, and may have to fight over him, while AJ much prefers Jake Kincaide, (but that’s a bit of a spoiler). Eve has a good mother figure in Mira, and we all love how Eve has a bit of a crush on Mr. Mira.

For Roarke, the sad part is that he doesn’t seem to have many friends. he has Richard and Elizabeth, but they are not around much. So we’re so happy that Nora gave Roarke a whole big biological family in Ireland. We also all love Brian Kelly.

We also talk about how their family circle is growing with Mavis and Leonardo’s daughter, Bella, and discuss the ever present question of “when are Eve and Roarke going to have a baby?”

Suzanne brings up Summerset as Roarke’s father figure…the character we love to hate. Undeniably, Summerset and Roarke have a special and unbreakable bond. We do think that despite everything, Summerset and Eve really do like each other. After all, Eve did advocate for Summerset when he had a broken leg and wanted the cat.

Jen as a lifelong Michigander, is thrilled to find out that Suzanne’s whole “Smoke and Fire” series is set in Grand Rapids, which is where Jen lives! AJ is in Southern California, and she and Suzanne talk about the gorgeous Temecula Valley wine country!

We're talking about "Rapture in Death"! This is one of the best books of the series, but we say that every podcast, so...

For this week's discussion, we welcome back Tara Corkery of the Basic Snitches podcast!!

This book is all about mind control. People are committing suicide due to subliminal messages put into VR goggles. The obvious choice for the culprit here is Jess Barrow, who is Mavis' new producer, and who is also a huge dick. Eve tries hard to pin it on him, but can't quite do it.

Eve does a couple of stupid things, like climbing out on a ledge to try to save Cerise Devane who wants to jump off her building, and trying on the VR goggles, only to find they are playing a sex fantasy program. Did she just cheat on Roarke? She decides to confess, but he seems fine with it. She just can't try it with actual humans, and she's fine with that.

The sex scenes in this book are doing real work here to show Eve and Roarke as they are normally and Eve and Roarke when they were victimized and mind controlled. Even though the first "mind control sex" they have is really hot and it's overall a great scene, we're not at all happy why and how it happened.

Second time "mind control sex" happens, we see "Scary Roarke" and who could blame him. It's also interesting that the "sex in the closet" scene is the first time Roarke uses Gaelic around Eve. He keeps saying "Liomsa," which means "mine."

Later, Roarke teaches Eve to say "a ghra" which means "My Love," and from that point forward, we hear this phrase a lot from Roarke.
