  • Managing Your Podcast Expectations – PCI 261
Starting a podcast is very exciting and nerve wracking, but there is something else you need to consider: managing your podcast expectations. There are plenty of tales out there from podcast hosts about how they made it big with an audience and sponsors right away. Be wary of those special cases and take a realistic look at what you can expect when you are a podcast.

    Best Practice
Manage Your Podcast Expectations: Know what to expect when starting a podcast

Podcasts start slowly (unless you are already have a large following)
If you really want to make a go of it, be consistent for at least two years

You will become an expert and subject matter expert in your niche (if you are not already)

Money won’t come right away. Podcasting is definitely not a get-rich-quick thing

You just might become famous in your niche
Prepare for some tech, whether you’re learning a little, or paying someone else to do it

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: I want my podcast to be ordered with the first episode at the top of the list. How would I do that?
Answer: Let me talk you out of it! I wouldn’t do that. Podcasts are episodic content, meaning it’s ongoing and traditionally the latest episode first and the rest in descending order. Podcast listeners are used to that and to turn that around would be both confusing and would cause everyone to listen to episode one and take a long, long time to get you your new episodes.

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: (from the Facebook group) My show has 800 episodes. I can only send up 300 max to be available. And old episodes DO get listened to. I'm thinking of making a 2nd podcast channel - called maybe The Chris Voss Show Archives? So I can have a feed of the older stuff? What do you think? I swear I heard of someone doing this?
Answer: 90% of shows globally deliver 90% of their lifetime download within the first 96 hours so it’s really a matter are you truly getting significant downloads for that old catalog. It’s very very rare for a show to have that type of organic long tail reach.
The 300 is a practical limit, not a true hard limit but I’m going to guess if you set it to 800 or 1000 the feed would be too large for any app to pull effectively.
For those shows with long-tail, this gives your listeners a reason to go to your site. ALL your episodes are available on your site.

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: What is caching? Why, as a podcaster, should I care?
Answer: Without getting too geeky, caching is a web technology that allows dynamically generated webpages to load quicker. It generates the webpage and stores it in memory for a time and serves it up to all visitors instead of generating the page every time. This also works for RSS feeds. When you change something in your RSS feed (add an episode) the RSS feed may be cached without the new episode. Once the cache is cleared, your new episode will be in the feed.

Question: Why can’t I find my podcast in Apple Podcasts search?

Answer:  Apple is a hardware company, not a search engine company.   :)    It can take a few days or weeks for your show to show up in search results in Apple.  Note, the only thing that Apple searches (currently) is the Title of the overall Podcast, Episode titles and the Author tag.   (DO NOT STUFF THESE WITH KEYWORDS)

  • Is It Time To Try a New Podcast App? – PCI 257
Many podcast listeners are dedicated to one specific podcast listening app. But, is it time to try a new podcast app? This goes for any podcast listener. No better time than now to encourage your listeners, friends, family, etc to try out a new podcast app.

    Best Practice
Encourage your listeners to to try another podcast app
With Apple Podcasts now delaying the release of new episodes, even to “Followers” of your podcast, maybe it’s time to try another app and encourage your listeners to do the same. Apps like Overcast for iOS are direct subscribing apps that allow you to get the episodes as soon as they are released instead of waiting the 4-24 hours or more that it takes Apple to update.

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: How early ahead of time should I submit my podcast to Apple, Spotify, etc if we have a specific launch date?
Answer: Apple says 1-5 business days, Spotify isn't specific but if submitted though Blubrry, it will be up within 2 days. What I would suggest is do you trailer or episode zero and submit the feed to all places at least 7 days ahead.

Have a Sound Focus: Why Good Sound is Important from Toby, on the Blubrry Pro team.

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: What’s the best way to cut down on background noise/extra sounds when you don’t have an official sound booth?
Answer: Toby talked about the WHY in the pro tip, this question gets to the how.
Do your best to record in a quiet place or a quiet time of the day.
You can try some of these things:

Use a dynamic microphone. Condensers are for a ‘soundproof booth’ Dynamics are for the rest of us.

Turn off any noise makers you don’t need. Such as heat, A/C, fans, laptops, or anything else that makes noise in the room.

Use the noise gate function if your setup has one.

You can turn down the gain of your mic and get much closer.

Edit the levels and add noise gate in post production (editing).

Don’t worry about them and call it ambiance :)

The noise filters in most audio editing software are not great. Most will make you sound underwater if you use it too much.

  • Podcast Call-To-Actions – PCI 254
Every successful podcast has a few things in common. One, great content, and two, a call-to-action. A podcast host wants listeners to do something, whether that's join their email list, recommend the show to a friend or subscribe; but something must be done. Most likely, they won't do it without your recommendation and polite encouraging.
    News

Spotify “opens” their premium podcasting service to some publishers and platforms.

    Best Practices
    Call-to-Actions (CTAs)
A specific call-to-action mentioned in a podcast can have a direct effect on the growth and progress of a podcast. We recommend mentioning these call-to-actions regularly, because often times people do not hear something once and then take action, it needs to be repeated.

Do you own your content? By Kate

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: What is the best way to build my email list?
Answer: In my opinion the best way is to ask your listeners in your show’s CTA (see best practice). Make sure you have an easy to find signup on your website.  Do not, necessarily use a popup, pop under, slider or anything like that. Some say they work, but my contention is that for every person that puts in their info, you have at least one that will leave your site to never return.

Pick an alternative just in case the one you want to see is not what you thought it was.

Most of the networking happens after-hours or in the hallways or on the show floor, not in the sessions.

Have fun but don’t drink too much.

Take notes or get business cards (if they use them) from people you meet.

Visit the booths on the show floor, you might learn something new.

Visit the small venders as well. Someday, they might be big and you may have made a good contact.

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: I want to stop podcasting. Do I have to pay my podcast host to keep my episodes online?
Answer: Yes, Blubrry and most other hosts will remove your episodes after you cancel your hosting plan. It’s just like the electric bill, you still have a minimum payment even if you never turn on a light that month. In podcast hosting, you have to keep the plan open to keep the files stored online. Most hosts (Blubrry included) allow you to switch to the lowest plan and ALL your back episodes will stay online.

  • Taking Care of Podcast Gear – PCI 252
It's important to take care of your podcast gear, regardless of the original cost. Podcasters should take the time to clean, properly store and travel with their podcasting gear such as microphones, headphones, mixers, recorders, etc.

    Best Practice
Studio Hygiene, how to take care of your gear.

Keep it clean (dust free is best!)

If you have to set it up to do your show every time, find a good place to store your gear. A protective case, dedicated drawer or shelf, a towel or cloth cover never hurt.

Cables are fragile. Don’t roll them too many times.

If it’s in a set location, limit access to that location. Keep pets, kids, significant others and coworkers away from it if at all possible.

You can also tape down cables so they don’t move around or get caught by someone.

Double check your settings on everything before you record. Never assume that it will always hold settings and that it will always work the same way. Do a 10 second record test before you start your show to make sure you’re getting a good capture.

Power down anything you can while not in use.

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: David asks, “There was a typo in the post title of my latest episode. I just fixed it on WordPress. How long does a change like that typically take to filter out to the podcast apps?”
Answer: It depends on the app. As with everything RSS based, it will refresh on the app or directory the next time that app or directory (or your listener) pulls the feed. Sometimes things like that can take longer than a new episode. If it doesn’t change in a reasonable time (day or so), It will the next time you publish an episode.
This goes for any publishing platform, not just WordPress / PowerPress.
