In lieu of our regular programme, this week's podcast is an interview and discussion special about the issues around the future of Irish nightlife - looking at licensing laws, the Give Us The Night campaign, whether we need a night mayor for Irish cities and the prospects of opening up new venues and increasing support for Ireland's musicians, DJs and producers.

Exploring the red tape and studying the mandate are Give Us The Night's Sunil Sharpe, Krystal Klear, Cork DJ Stevie G, Limerick and Dublin long-spinning DJ Aoife Nic Canna and Marcus O'Laoire (Hijinks).

Earlier this year, Give Us The Night reignited its campaign to put this issue back into the minds of government, city councillors and our representatives.

The newly published mandate, accompanied by meetings around major Irish cities like Galway, Limerick, Cork and Dublin, has made some suggestions for what could be improved in terms of nightlife licensing in Ireland.

The key points of the mandate included

Establishing a night-time advisory board and night mayor or Night-Time Economy Advisor, to represent the issues of the night-time economy

Abolition of Special Exemption Orders - for every night that a club opens late til 2.30am they must pay €410 in court plus solicitors fee before the doors even open - this places financial restrictions on each late night venue and applies to every space big or small. Members of the gardaí and organisations like MyTaxi have been favourable in this regard.

In addition, Give Us the Night are proposing that some allowances for later licences past 3am where appropriate and with consultation could be looked at as a way forward, like other European cities.

At the backbone of Give Us The Night is the idea that the nightlife economy is important to the economy and the well-being of Irish people. To disallow our citizens to party late into the night if they so desire is a 20th century idea and we need 21st century solutions.
