His Amazon Kindle #1 best-selling book, Simpler Living, with a foreword by Mark Victor Hansen of Chicken Soup for the Soul, is the definitive work on simpler living, offering nearly 2000 tips arranged by every aspect of life! His first gift book Dial it Down, Live it Up sells all over the world.

      Tips:

      • Ideas are all around us. There’s no shortage of ideas. What are people doing well? What are they struggling with? Write about those ideas.
      • If you’re stuck, then call a client and discuss your ideas. Record it, transcribe it, and edit it. You’ll have written a chapter.
      • If you speak for 30 minutes, at a normal rate of 100 words per minute, you’ll have 3,000 words, which is as long a chapter should be. That’s about 12 pages, double spaced, 12 point type.
      • Getting started to write is like a slingshot. When you see words on a screen, you are incentivized to keep writing.
      • Write first. Edit later.
      • To get over writer’s block, pretend your best client is sitting across the table from you and you are having a discussion as you record your thoughts..
      • Market your book by dividing the content into articles, blogs, white papers, special reports, press releases, and executive summaries.

        Tips:

        • When I didn’t know what to write about, I would write, “Why is this important to me? Then I would write whatever came into my head. Through that process, the words came out. Just write
        • Bounce ideas off people. When you brainstorm, you find ideas you never would have considered on your own
        • Tell your stories and tie them to business, so people can say, “I had that experience.”
        • The formula for making points is: story, lesson, application. Everything starts with a story.
        • Ask people for their stories.
        • My biggest fear was not finishing.
        • Start with an outline. But as I wrote, I realized I forget something. So I added ideas and moved things around.

          • #081 – Charmaine Hammond on The Sponsorship Game Plan for Authors

Charmaine Hammond has been in the business of changing lives for more than 25 years. This former Correctional Officer (yup! She worked in jails) and Corporate Dispute Resolution Expert now travels the world teaching the principles of leadership, business success, and collaboration. In business 21 years, she has owned several businesses in Canada and the US.

She is a co-founder of the Evolutionary Business Council whose collective reach exceeds 140 million. She is also co-founder and co-host of the Global Influence Summit. She has sat on all four sides of the sponsorship table (as a Director of nonprofits seeking sponsorship, a specialist in government responsibility for funding/sponsorship portfolio, as an entrepreneur like you seeking sponsorship, and as a sponsor for other people’s events, projects, and dreams).

As a bestselling author (of five books & featured in six others) and Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), she has had tremendous success in finding corporate sponsors to fund her printing, graphic design, venues, travel, media, technology, hotels, even her pet food and dog poop bags! She has developed sponsorship relationships with 100’s of companies.

            Tips:

            • Sponsors want access to your audience.
            • Sponsors are often more interested in engagement, not size of your audience. Get people engaged.
            • Sponsors are savvy. They know if you purchased followers or if you had organic growth.
            • Ask sponsors what they think would be meaningful for you to offer. Putting their logo on your website might not appeal to them. Take time to build a relationship with them, spend time asking questions to learn what matters to them and what type of recognition is meaningful to them.
            • Sponsor decision makers receive pitches and proposals all year long, Charmaine shared an example of a sponsor that receives more than 400 proposals a year. You can stand out if you do research on LinkedIn to find common personal connections, build a relationship with them and learn what their objectives are. You can help the sponsor while they are helping you.
            • Contact sponsors with LinkedIn, not email which feels spammy.
            • Sponsorships must feel mutual. Look for the best-fit partnerships. There must be alignment with your brand.

              Tips:

              • Now is the best time to write your book.
              • If you are too busy to write your book, then delegate anything that is not in your genius zone.
              • If you can’t write your book, do what Sam Walton and Lee Iacocca did: hire a ghostwriter.
              • Independent bookstores will carry your book if you show them you can move books. They don’t want a book gathering dust. Show them your marketing plan.
              • Anthologies help authors. We are all in this together. We are not competing against each other.
              • People write books to leave a legacy. They want to give back.

              • #079 – JoAnne Funch on LinkedIn Tips for Authors

JoAnne Funch’s #1 core value is connection. That value defines what her business believes and is the key principle for guiding other professionals from making random connections to making strategic and high-value connections that result in more profitable, long-term opportunities.

As a connector, she was always that person everyone could count on to plan the family get-togethers, pick-up the phone first to reach out to old friends, write a personal note in every Christmas card, and throw the parties at her house.

She was also raised with entrepreneurship in her blood! Both parents were business owners and she caught that bug early. What she learned from them was respect, resilience, integrity, guts, and compassion.

Since 2008, JoAnne has applied her core value of connection along with honing her skills on LinkedIn as a tool for business, reputation management, thought leadership, job opportunities, and brand exposure to empower others to build a brand worth following!

                Tips:

                • Build your personal brand to stand out and build credibility with readers by having a great profile
                • On LinkedIn, add 3-9 relevant hashtags to increase viewership. Best hashtags are those with over 100K followers
                • On LinkedIn, put a picture of your book in your profile header and the Featured Section.
List your book in your publications section.
                • On LinkedIn, you can repurpose your blog posts & book content as articles. You can include your bio box with links to your website and Amazon book page.
                • Relationships lead to opportunities. Be open to building your network.
                • On LinkedIn, when people comment on your posts, you should comment back, not merely hit “like” because LinkedIn wants to see engagement. LinkedIn will show your post more often if they see engagement.
                • On LinkedIn, post items that add value to your followers. People don’t want to see self-promotional items.

                • #078 – Kimberly Hobscheid on Turn Your Book Into an Audiobook

Kimberly Hobscheid is co-founder of I’m Hearing Stories which connects authors, narrators, speakers, and listeners.

Her mission is to get entrepreneurs seen and heard in a huge way – from live stages to podcasts, web summits, and TV.

Because if you aren’t being seen, you’re being overlooked! Let her get you connected and out on stages, live and online, so that you can get your message out and stop being overlooked!

                  Tips:

                  • Create a business around what you love doing.
                  • One third of people love reading books. One third of people love listening to audio books. One third of people will do both.
                  • Some voice over artists charge about $200 per “finished audio hour.” Others use a royalty share model of 50/50.
                  • A book with 30,000 words would be an audio book of four hours.
                  • Audio book rights are sold separately from print and ebook rights. If you have a deal with a major publisher, be sure to retain your audio rights.
                  • About 10 percent of readers finish a print book. But 80 percent of readers finish an audio book.
                  • If you want to get your material inside other human beings, then one of the best ways is through an audio book.
                  • Only 1 in 20 books are turned into audio books, so audio books have less competition.

Janine Kelbach, RNC-OB, started her nursing career in a community hospital learning the basics of labor and delivery, admitting patients, the normal newborn, and scrubbing into the operating room. She quickly became a breastfeeding resource nurse and certified CPR instructor.

In 2007, she took a position in a higher acuity facility in the Cleveland, Ohio area. There she worked postpartum and labor and delivery. She became the assistant manager and educated new nurses, developed educational content, and managed other labor and delivery specifications.

From then until now, she has obtained her high-risk OB certification and her BSN.

She started writing for different healthcare blogs and websites in 2012. Currently, Janine is currently writing articles and social media content for publishing companies and various clients.

Janine enjoys spending time with her husband, two young boys, and their Great Danes, Marvin and Jupiter. She enjoys the beach, outdoors, working out, running, but most of all, she loves being a busy mom.

                    Tips:

                    • There is a big demand for nurses who can write.
                    • Nurses who write can actually make more money from writing than from nursing.
                    • Nurses are naturally good at research and communications, so they can become good writers.
                    • The best nurse writers are deadline driven, have a creative mind and are hard working.
                    • Writing helps a nurse release her creativity and make extra money
                    • Nurses can write about insights into the job, work/life issues and medical issues.

Claus Raasted is an executive coach specializing in innovation and storytelling. He’s had the good fortune of having worked with some impressive organizations; from assisting IKEA Centres with rolling out global strategy to having Disney Imagineers visit his events for inspiration.

Part of his work today consists of helping clients both big and small with tackling the problems of tomorrow – and sometimes this happens in the form of regular consulting gigs.

                      Tips:

                      • Every page needs to be the entrance to a book.
                      • The reader should be able to flip through your book at random and find valuable information.
                      • If a chapter is 26 pages long, it will scare people away. People won’t go back.
                      • There was a time when a book was something magical. There were all sorts of gatekeepers. Today, there are no barriers to entry.
                      • I am in the last generation that had an analog childhood and a digital adulthood.
                      • I’ve written 30 books but I really don’t like to write. So I do it fast and efficient.
