Podcasting After Dark - Cult Movies and TV Shows

My Best Fiend (1999) synopsis: “In the 1950s, an adolescent Werner Herzog was transfixed by a film performance of the young Klaus Kinski. Years later, they would share an apartment where, in an unabated, forty-eight-hour fit of rage, Kinski completely destroyed the bathroom. From this chaos, a violent, love-hate, profoundly creative partnership was born.”

Director: Werner Herzog

This week on Podcasting After Dark, Corey and Zak conclude their two-part documentary review series with Werner Herzog’s My Best Fiend! Unlike Lost Soul, this film covers multiple productions and a lifetime of collaboration and animosity. If you’re a fan of either Werner Herzog or Klaus Kinski, or the creative process in generally, this is a must-watch documentary!

We hope you enjoy this free-form review of My Best Fiend! Leave a comment on our Instagram page or Patreon and let us know what you think of the episode.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002) synopsis: “Ten years after initially meeting, Anakin Skywalker shares a forbidden romance with Padmé Amidala, while Obi-Wan Kenobi investigates an assassination attempt on the senator and discovers a secret clone army crafted for the Jedi.”

Starring: Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, and Temuera Morrison
Director: George Lucas

Since Zak and Corey are both on vacation this week, Tim and Dean at Talking Back were nice enough to let us release their Attack of the Clones review that Corey guested on back in February! This is one part of a year-long walkthrough of the Star Wars franchise where Tim and Dean discuss a different movie each month in chronological order (including Solo and Rogue One). They just dropped their Return of the Jedi review so make sure you go back and listen to all the episodes in the series on the Talking Back podcast feeds!

Look for Corey to make one more appearance on Talking Back to discuss The Last Jedi in a couple months. Our intrepid co-host loves to defend the most hated of all the Star Wars films lol!

Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau (2014) synopsis: “A behind the scenes chronicle of how clash of vision, bad creative decisions, lack of interest and really bad weather plagued the disastrous production of the infamous The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996).”

Director: David Gregory

This week on Podcasting After Dark, Corey and Zak kick off their two-part documentary review series with Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau. This doc was produced in 2014 but chronicles that hot mess of a movie starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer! Lost Soul is a fantastic look into the filmmaking process in general and how easily it can all fall apart, especially when it’s helmed by a young auteur!

Where you know her from: Masters of the Universe (1987), Death Spa (1988), and The Last Boy Scout (1991)

This month on Interviews After Dark (by way of Two Dollar Late Fee) we talk to ‘Virginia Slim’ herself, Chelsea Field!

This interview wraps-up our month-long crossover event with Two Dollar Late Fee. We hope you enjoyed this deep dive into Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (1991), and we hope you get a kick out of this chat with Chelsea Field. Corey, Zak, and Dustin talk to her about everything from her early career as a dancer to working with Mickey Rourke and Don Johnson. Chelsea admittedly doesn’t do a lot of interviews so you are not going to want to miss this rare conversation!

Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (1991) synopsis: “Forced by the imminent foreclosure of their friend's bar, two lifelong buddies will decide to rob a bank's armored car, not knowing that its cargo is not money but a new street drug.”

Starring: Mickey Rourke, Don Johnson, Daniel Baldwin, and Chelsea Field
Director: Simon Wincer

This week on Podcasting After Dark, Corey and Zak are joined by special guest, Dustin Rubin to review Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man! This episode is the second part in our month-long crossover event with Two Dollar Late Fee. As you heard on the previous discussion, the gang isn’t too keen on the film, and not much changes with the full breakdown, but they still have an absolute blast chatting about the highs and (mostly) lows of this early-90s cult film.

Look for the full interview with Chelsea Field to drop next week as Corey, Zak, and Dustin conclude the Podcasting After Dark/Two Dollar Late Fee crossover!

Diallo: ReBoot (1994-97, 2001) - IMDb
Adam: Captain Simian & The Space Monkeys (1996) - IMDb
Corey: Men in Black: The Series (1997-01) - IMDb

This week on Podcasting After Dark presents TV Obscura, Zak, Corey, and Diallo are joined by special guest, Adam Speas of Cartwright! A Seinfeld Podcast to review four obscure cartoons from the 90s!

Well, some are more obscure than others lol. Adam was the perfect choice for this episode since he’s a 90s kid and has a huge love for nostalgia and everything retro, and he really hit a homerun bringing Captain Simian to the conversation. We hope you enjoy this episode of TV Obscura, and make sure you check out Adam’s other awesome podcasts (links below)!

The first episode of our second annual Two Dollar Late Fee crossover event is here! This time we are covering the early 90s Mickey Rourke/Don Johnson buddy movie, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (1991)!

Just like last year, the Two Dollar Late Fee general movie review and music discussion episode drops first. Then, in two weeks, look for our full Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man breakdown to drop, followed by our interview with Chelsea Field (which you’ll hear us reference multiple times this episode and on the breakdown).

We hope you have as much fun listening to this month-long crossover event as we had recording it! Remember: It’s better to be dead and cool than alive and uncool!

Where you know him from: Vice Squad (1982), Deadly Force (1983), The Wind (1986), and Eve N' God: This Female is Not Yet Rated (TM) (2019)

This month on Interviews After Dark we talk to the man, the myth, the legend... Stoney Cooper himself, Wings Hauser!

This interview was a long time coming, as listeners of our podcast know, and it was everything we could have hoped for! Wings was very open and honest about his history in Hollywood, and even cleared up a few false rumors. He even gives a disturbing inside look into his personal inspiration for Ramrod's (Vice Squad) backstory. Wings does NOT hold back!

Unfortunately, the audio quality isn't as good as we would have hoped for. We had to record the episode in a conference room that wasn't made for audio recording lol! We don't think it diminishes the conversation by any means, though, and we look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts in the comments below.

Death Spa (1988) synopsis: “Gruesome deaths begin to occur at a hip Los Angeles health club.”

Starring: William Bumiller, Brenda Bakke, Merritt Butrick, and Chelsea Field
Director: Michael Fischa

This week on Podcasting After Dark, Zak and Corey break down and review the second movie in their two-part summer filmfest, Death Spa! The irony is, even though Zak picked it as his summer movie, Death Spa actually takes place in February for Mardi Gras. Double irony: Corey’s pick, The ‘Burbs, was released in February… and February is Corey’s birth month.

Where are we going with all of this? No where! Now, enjoy Death Spa (and we know our use of the word ‘irony’ is closer to Alanis Morissette’s definition)

Look for our interview with Chelsea Field to drop very soon!

Diallo’s pick: Matt Houston (1982-85) - IMDb
Corey’s pick: Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1983-87) - IMDb
Zak’s pick: The Insiders (1985) - IMDb

This week on Podcasting After Dark presents TV Obscura, Zak, Corey, and Diallo dive into three quirky crime shows from the 80s! They aren’t quite comedies and they aren’t straight-up dramas either. Each show feels very unique but also of its time. The boys really did a great job of keeping this episode of TV Obscura focused and thematic this month!

Of course, Zak’s pick is the deepest of cuts. So much so there’s only one version of the pilot episode online and the IMDb uses screencaps from that video (time code and all). You can watch every episode we discussed free on our Patreon page. We hope you enjoy the show!
