Podcasting After Dark - Cult Movies and TV Shows

Invasion USA (1985) synopsis: “A one-man army comes to the rescue of the United States when a spy attempts an invasion.”

Starring: Chuck Norris, Richard Lynch, and Melissa Prophet
Director: Joseph Zito

This week on Podcasting After Dark Zak takes us down memory lane with his Christmas movie pick of the month, Invasion USA! It’s Chuck Norris at his most Chuck-iest! On the flip side of the coin, Corey has never seen the movie before. Will it hold up for him without any nostalgia? Listen and find out!

For the pilot episode of PAD Watchlist, Corey talks with Tess Llanos from the Ongoing Comicbook Discussion Podcast about their favorite movies to watch to get in the mood for Halloween (yea, we recorded this mid-October lol). We hope you enjoy the show!

Cyborg (1989) synopsis: “A martial artist hunts a killer in a plague-infested urban dump of the future.”

Starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Deborah Richter, and Vincent Klyn
Director: Albert Pyun

This week on Podcasting After Dark both Corey and Zak quickly discover that nostalgia is a helluva drug! Some movies should just stay in the past. Needless to say, Cyborg doesn’t quite live up to their memories of it but the boys still have a great time breaking it down and discussing all things Jean-Claude Van Damme!

The New Kids (1985) synopsis: “A brother and sister arrive in a small town to help their relatives run an amusement park, and they find the town is terrorized by a local street gang.”

Starring: Shannon Presby, Lori Loughlin, James Spader, John Philbin, and Eric Stoltz
Director: Sean S. Cunningham

After a month of zombie movies, it’s Zak’s turn to showrun the podcast and this week his movie pick is The New Kids (1985)! Corey literally never even heard of this movie until it arrived in the mail! Can Zak pull off a high school revenge film hat trick (Class of 1984 and Tuff Turf being the first two winners) or will this fall flat on its face? You’ll have to listen to the episode to find out!

Return of the Living Dead II (1988) synopsis: “Curious kids unearth the barrels that previously helped revive the dead, which proves the second time's an undead charm.”

Starring: Thom Mathews, James Karen, Michael Kenworthy, and Suzanne Snyder
Director: Ken Wiederhorn

Sure it might be the lesser of the two Return of the Living Dead movies that Thom Mathews starred in but Zak and Corey have a lot of love for RotLD2, and we think it shows! It definitely showed during our exclusive interview with Freddy & Joey (and Tommy Jarvis in Friday the 13th 6) himself, Thom Mathews! You can listen now at patreon.com/podcastingafterdark!

Return of the Living Dead (1985) synopsis: “When two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies.”

Starring: Clu Gulager, James Karen, Don Calfa, and Thom Mathews
Director: Dan O'Bannon

“Send. More. Paramedics!”

We kick off our Return of the Living Dead tribute month with the first (and arguably the best) movie in this zom-com franchise! Zak and Corey have a ton of fun breaking down and examining what makes this movie special and why it holds up so well 34 years after its release!

Fright Night (1985) synopsis: “A teenager discovers that the newcomer in his neighborhood is a vampire, so he turns to an actor in a television horror show for help dealing with the undead.”

Starring: Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale, Amanda Bearse, Jonathan Stark, and Stephen Geoffreys
Director: Tom Holland

“Welcome to Fright Night…for real!”

Wowzers! This is a huge episode! Both literally and figuratively. Literally because it’s pretty damn long and figuratively because it’s Zak’s favorite horror movie (so, it’s a big deal to him). And it’s a big deal for the podcast too because it coincides with the release of our Patreon exclusive interview with Stephen Geoffreys, who played ‘Evil Ed’ in the movie! You can listen to that right now at patreon.com/podcastingafterdark along with our exclusive monthly show, Wrap-Up After Dark!

[UPDATE] We also interviewed Billy Cole himself, Jonathan Stark! Listen to that interview on our PATREON PAGE as well!

Tuff Turf (1985) synopsis: “The new kid in school must battle a gang of street toughs after stealing the gang leader's girl.”

Starring: James Spader, Kim Richards, Paul Mones, and Robert Downey Jr
Director: Fritz Kiersch

This week the boys tackle another movie that is near and dear to Zak’s heart but is completely new to Corey- which was the same scenario for Class of 1984 (I think we are seeing a trend here with school themed movies). So, what did Corey think of Tuff Turf after his first viewing? You’ll have to listen to our epic two and a half hour podcast to find out!

Lifeforce (1985) synopsis: “A race of space vampires arrives in London and infects the populace, beginning an apocalyptic descent into chaos.”

Starring: Steve Railsback, Peter Firth, Frank Finlay, Mathilda May, and Patrick Stewart
Director: Tobe Hooper

This week Corey and Zak tackle Lifeforce, the Tobe Hooper helmed Cannon film starring Mathilda May and Steve Railsback. Be warned, this movie has a healthy amount of nudity and violence. Pretty much everything a teenage boy growing up in the late 80s/early 90s could possibly want to see late at night! So, turn off the lights and settle in for a fun ride through Corey and Zak’s twisted childhood!

TerrorVision (1986) synopsis: “A family's new satellite TV system starts receiving signals from another planet, and soon it becomes the passageway to an alien world.”

Starring: Diane Franklin, Gerrit Graham, Mary Woronov, Chad Allen, and Jon Gries
Director: Ted Nicolaou

This week we have a really fun (and slightly disturbing) movie for you…TerrorVison! A personal favorite of Zak’s and a personal piece of trauma for Corey. Don’t worry, the boys get into all of that and more on the podcast. So, sit back and enjoy the show!
