Irit Chapnick is the creator of the website discoverythroughgrief.com.  Located in San Antonio, Texas, Irit has dedicated her work in grief coaching to her son, Jonathan Sacks, who took his life on 12/28/2020 during the Covid Epidemic. 

She has studied with Dr. Edith Eger and Chris Duncan and received a coaching certificate in Magnetic Mind Conscious Education.  She is currently studying with David Kessler in the Grief Education Certificate program. 

Although military families and survivors of suicide was the direction her work first took, Irit has broadened her approach to include loss of a marriage or relationship; loss of a beloved pet; or loss of the dream job you.  She is supported on her website by a variety of coaches and creators and believes that movement and creation are essential to coming to terms with grief!

In her latest role, Irit has become a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for Bexar County, Texas.

Rabbi Dalia Marx, Ph.D., is the Rabbi Aaron D. Panken Professor of Liturgy and Midrash at HUC-JIR’s Taube Family Campus in Jerusalem, and teaches in various academic institutions in Israel and Europe.

Marx, a tenth generation Jerusalemite, earned her doctorate at the Hebrew University and her rabbinic ordination at HUC-JIR in Jerusalem and Cincinnati in 2002. She is involved in various research projects and is active in promoting liberal Judaism in Israel. Marx writes for academic and popular journals and publications.

Marx is the lead editor of the Israeli Reform siddur, Tfillat HaAdam (2020). Her book From Time to Time: Journeys in the Jewish Calendar (Yeditos Sfarim 2018), was translated to several languages, and is available in English from the CCAR Press.

She is the author of When I Sleep and When I Wake: On Prayers between Dusk and Dawn (Yediot Sfarim, 2010, in Hebrew),  A Feminist Commentary of the Babylonian Talmud (Mohr Siebeck, 2013, in English), About Time: Journeys in the Jewish-Israeli Calendar (Yediot Sfarim, 2018, in Hebrew) and the co-editor of a few books. See Marx’s website.

Marx lives in Jerusalem with her husband, Roly Zyblersztein, Ph.D. They have three children.

Rabbi Schwartzman was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. She received her Masters of Hebrew Literature in 1988, and ordination in 1990, from the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City. Following ordination, she joined Temple Rodef Shalom as our Temple’s first Assistant Rabbi and became the synagogue’s first Associate Rabbi. In June of 1998, following the retirement of Rabbi Lazlo Berkowits z”l, Rabbi Schwartzman was installed as Senior Rabbi of Rodef Shalom, giving Temple Rodef Shalom the distinction of being one of the largest congregations headed by a woman rabbi.

Rabbi Schwartzman is involved in the leadership of many Jewish organizations and has served on the executive board of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) and co-coordinated the Women’s Rabbinic Network of Reform Judaism. She has also worked with many community organizations including the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, many national and local housing organizations, and has been active in community AIDS projects.

Rabbi Matthew V. Soffer is the senior rabbi of Judea Reform Temple in Durham, South Carolina.

He lives in Durham with his wife and three children.

Rabbi Soffer was ordained as a graduate of the New York Campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. He served at Temple Israel of Boston since 2009, beginning as a rabbinic intern and finishing as Senior Associate Rabbi. As a Student Rabbi, he served at Main Line Reform Temple and Congregation Beth Elohim, both in New York. His work has included portfolios in Social Jusice and in outreach to and engagement of Jews in their 20s and 30s.

Among his honors are the Religious Action Center’s 50 Faces of Justice, Newsweek/Daily Beast’s 10 Rabbi’s to Watch, and NFTY President’s Award. His publications include “Global Swarming: Can We Become Worthy of Creation,” CCAR Press, 2017; several commentaries and essays on My Jewish Learning, on Reform Judaism.org, and in The Times of Israel. His work also includes music composition and performance, comedy, and community organizing.

The topic of his Rabbinic Thesis, “Listening for Laughter: Sensing Humor in the Babylonian Talmud,” is a wonderful window on his character and style.

Samuel A. (Sam) Simon started his career in Washington, DC as a lawyer for Ralph Nader’s first advocacy group. He then spent 25 years as head of a public affairs firm. In that work, he was often in the news, with appearances on Face The Nation, Phil Donahue Show, Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, and many more. Sam calls his playwriting and theatre work is 4th Age. His first play, The Actual Dance, Love’s Ultimate Journey Through Breast Cancer, has toured from 2013 to the present. In 2021 The Actual Dance was turned into an award-winning biography.  Sam lives in Mclean, Virginia, with his wife Susan. They have two children and four grandchildren.

Sam and his wife have been active in their Jewish Community.  The are members of Temple Rodef Shalom, Falls Church for Virginia for more than 50 years. Each has served as President of the Congregation. Sam has been active nationally as a member of the Board of Advisors for Hebrew Union College for nearly 30 years, an continues to serve in an emeritus status. He is also on the Board of Visitors for the Debbie Friedman School of Music and previously Chaired the Advisory Committee to the Debbie Friedman Schools of Sacred Music.

They have two children and four grandchildren.

Weiss, Ph.D., the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Provost at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR), Cincinnati. Rabbi Weiss died March 3, 2026.

“Rabbi Weiss has been a transformative presence at Hebrew Union College for more than two decades,” said HUC-JIR President Andrew Rehfeld, Ph.D. “Her scholarship, vision, and fierce commitment to the formation of Jewish clergy have shaped this institution in ways that will endure for generations. We are grateful beyond measure for her service and hold her and her loved ones in our hearts.”

During her tenure, Rabbi Weiss championed several landmark initiatives, including a curricular redesign, the launch of the Virtual Pathway for Rabbinical students, the creation of the Seminary Hebrew Program, and a renewal of spiritual and professional formation as a core component of clergy studies.

In this interview, recorded in April 2019, Rabbi Weiss discusses the new book, American Values, Religious Voices: 100 Days. 100 Letters, which she co-authored with Lisa M. Weinberger.

In 2016 and 2020, Rabbi Weiss created the interfaith public scholarship project called American Values, Religious Voices, bringing together 100 leaders across religions and denominations to write letters to the president and Congress for the first 100 days of the first Trump administration and the Biden administration, calling the project ‘a national, nonpartisan campaign created from the conviction that scholars who study and teach our diverse religious traditions have something important to say about our shared American values.’

A scholar of the Hebrew Bible, she won the American Jewish Book Award in 2011 as co-editor of The Torah: A Women’s Commentary (CCAR Press, 2008), the first-ever Hebrew Bible commentary made up of scholarship by women rabbis, poets, and scholars.

After the 2016 presidential election, Rabbi Weiss teamed up with graphic designer Lisa M. Weinberger to create an “innovative volume” that addresses the concerns over the deep divisions in our country. While looking for ways to respond, many Americans turned to their respective religious leaders for guidance. These 100 letters —addressed to the president, vice president, and members of the 115th Congress and Trump administration—were written by some of America’s most accomplished and thoughtful scholars of religion. Dr. Weiss’s book is one of the first publications of the University of Cincinnati’s recently established press.

As provost, Rabbi Weiss led one of the United States’ oldest Jewish institutions through a decade of transformation, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the creation of the seminary’s first remote curriculum. As a professor at Hebrew Union College, Rabbi Weiss taught generations of students who would go on to lead congregations and Jewish communities across the world. She rarely turned down invitations to lead Bible study and share her scholarship, visiting synagogues and institutions across the country as a scholar-in-residence.”  

Her daughter noted in an email from HUC-JIR that “Rabbi Andrea Weiss was a prominent American rabbi and global leader in the Jewish community. As provost of Hebrew Union College, Rabbi Weiss became the first-ever woman to ordain rabbis in the Reform movement and was one of very few female rabbis to ever ordain Jewish clergy.”

During her time at Hebrew Union College, Rabbi Weiss shaped generations of students. With each graduating class, newly ordained rabbis, cantors, educators, and communal professionals enter the world inspired by her example. Her work embodies a calling at once scholarly and spiritual: to draw out new voices from ancient words and to guide a vibrant Jewish future. Jewish Sacred Aging sends condolences to her husband Alan Tauber, their children Rebecca and Ilan, her father Marty Weiss, her siblings Mitch, Laura, and Roger, and Roger’s wife, Catherine Corrigan.

Rabbi Jon Cutler, a native of Philadelphia, earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Temple University in Religious Studies. He earned a Master of Hebrew Letters and received his ordination as a Rabbi from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Wyncote, PA. He then earned his Doctor of Ministry (Counseling) from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York.

​On September 1st, 2015, Rabbi Cutler become the rabbi of Beth Israel Congregation of Chester County and continues to serve the members of Beth Israel.

Rabbi Cutler’s extensive pulpit experience includes serving four congregations in his civilian career – Congregation Bet Tikva, Flemington, NJ (1993-1999); Congregation Tiferes B’nai Israel, Warrington, PA (1999-2007); Darkaynu, Warrington, PA (2009-2015); and an interim rabbi at Congregation Beth Hatikva (JRF) in Summit, NJ (2013-2014).

Rabbi Cutler retired (2017) as a Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserves after serving 32 years.  He served on active duty for five years – Philippines, Camp Lejeune, NC and Japan.  

As a reservist, his last assignment was Deputy Chaplain for the US Marine Corps (2015-2017) at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. He served as the Force Chaplain for Naval Sea Systems Command and as Deputy Force Chaplain, Commander Navy Installations Command in Washington, DC (2013-2015) and Deputy Command Chaplain for the US 6th Fleet, U.S. Forces Europe and Africa (2012-2013).

​Rabbi Cutler served as a hospice chaplain for Abramson Center for Jewish Life. He is an adjunct professor teaching Judaic Studies at Gratz College in Melrose Park, PA, Philosophy and Religion at Philadelphia University in Philadelphia, PA, and Counseling Psychology (graduate program) at Holy Family University in Philadelphia, PA.

​​He is married to Thierry Steenberghs and has a son (Thomas), daughter in law (Crystal), a granddaughter (Ariel), and a step-son (Cedric).

Carol Steinberg is an accomplished writer and editor and a former award-winning journalist who contributed regularly to The New York Times, Success magazine, Long Island Jewish World, and other publications. She left journalism mid-career to serve for 15 years as an executive at local and national nonprofit organizations focused on Alzheimer’s disease—a way of giving back after her father died as a result of the disease. Currently, she writes the biweekly newsletter for Voices of Alzheimer’s.

Rabbi Leah Cohen Tenenbaum, DMin, BCC-PCHAC (HUC-JIR 2000), serves as the inpatient palliative care chaplain and as a member of the Ethics Committee at Yale New Haven Hospital. She is a faculty member of FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics) and has served on the CCAR Board of Trustees, the CCAR National Ethics Taskforce, and currently the CCAR Press Council. She has written chapters for The Sacred Struggle: Jewish Responses to Trauma (CCAR Press, 2025) and Fragile Dialogue: New Voices of Liberal Zionism (CCAR Press, 2018) and is the coeditor with Rabbi Douglas Kohn of Striving to Be Human: Jewish Perspectives on Twenty First-Century Challenges (CCAR Press, 2025). She frequently teaches and presents on spirituality, serious illness, and medical ethics.

Rabbi Douglas Kohn serves Temple Beth Jacob in Newburgh, New York, having previously served congregations in Buffalo, Baltimore, Chicago, and Southern California, and is happily busy in all aspects of congregational and community endeavors. In addition to coediting Striving to Be Human (CCAR Press, 2025) with Rabbi Leah Cohen Tenenbaum, he is the editor of two other volumes, Life, Faith, and Cancer: Jewish Journeys Through Diagnosis, Treatment, and Recovery (URJ Press, 2008) and Broken Fragments: Jewish Experiences of Alzheimer’s Disease Through Diagnosis, Adaptation, and Moving On (URJ Press, 2012), and has written and spoken widely on the themes of illness, medical ethics, and being human. Rabbi Kohn has served on numerous CCAR, URJ, and communal commissions, committees, and boards, while still savoring time to read, write, and paint, as well as exercise, cook, and travel with his wife, Cindy, and their children and grandchildren.

Dr. Robert Singer is a clinical cardiologist with Trinity Mid-Atlantic Cardiology in Philadelphia.

Dr. Singer received his MD in 1987 from S.U.N.Y. Health Science Center at Brooklyn. He is board-certified in Nuclear Cardiology, cardiovascular diseases, and internal medicine.

He held a fellowship in cardiology at Hahneman University Hospital in Philadelphia, and a residency and internship in internal medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, Bronx, NY.

He also studied at Tel Aviv University-Sackler School of Medicine. He received a BA in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Singer is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
