Pop Queers

City of Kingston Council candidate, Jenna Davey-Burns, is matched with John P Wintle of JOY’s In the Studio in this grueling test of world news knowledge, international city ordinance awareness, and most importantly, fictitious towns of TV trivia. Although they entered the competition as opponents, they left as friends and are sure to use the ineffective back-scratcher prize on each other whenever the 1.5 meter social distancing rule ends.

Jenna is running in the October 2020 elections so tell all your friends and family! Besides running for council, she also serves as a trustee for the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, fosters 3 children, and wants you to check out Cambodian Kids Can, an organization she used to sit on the board of that helps young Cambodian women from rural communities gain an education. Jenna’s come a long way from her days working the canteen at a Mordiallac skating rink!

John P Wintle wanted nothing more than to be a Christmas present when he was a kid. Now he’s JOY’s music coordinator and the host of In The Studio every Saturday at 8pm on JOY.  Drop him a line if you have a music request that he can add to the daily playlist options and you just might get your wish.

Ringgggggg! School’s back in session tonight when our two teachers become the students. We pit stand up Billie Duncan against Geeks OUT host, Clayton Wimshurst to see who’ll be at top of this class… of 2. Tough competition.

We also celebrate the eve of Wear It Purple Day with some rainbow questions that these queer teachers know a little something about.

Listen in to see who wins and gets to “*enjoy a perfect life?”

What do you get when you pit the international superstar, sex symbol, Madonna-lovin’, homewreckin’, accordion playing Hans the German against one of JOY’s long-time volunteers and radio host of Miss Chatelaine, Katie Purvis?  You can bet on a TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT… competition on a global scale! Only ONE of them will go home with the prized pooch poop, tonight.

Hans the German is the only Australian-passport holding, Berlin Wunderkind to have competed on America’s Got Talent: The Champions, held in early 2020. Although he is grounded, like the rest of us right now, you can follow all that Hans does, (and will do-do, honey!) by following @AccordionHans on all the socials.

Katie’s show, Miss Chatelaine is on JOY every Sunday morning from 9am-11am. Whether you’re a K.D. Langsbian or not, it’s a great way to ease into your Sunday morning with some chilled out tracks featuring tons of Australian artists, and most of them, Gay AF.  Find out more at @MissChatJOY on twitter and instagram or follow Katie’s personal adventures at @KatieMelb on twitter.

The chiselled jawed Auckland-born, Sydney-based R&B Electro musician, Ethan, just emerged from hotel quarantine to go head to head with musical theatre darling, JOY’s own, Johnno. They battled through several rounds, including “Ditch, please,” a round that tested their knowledge of the two countries on either side of the Tasman sea. Tune in to witness the major upset and stick around to check out Ethan’s sexy track, introduced by the man himself.

You can hear Ethan’s first single, “Til Morning” on many of JOY’s shows or find it anywhere you else you stream music.  Pro Tip!: use it as the soundtrack on your next hot date.  Follow Ethan (@legendthan) for updates on new releases and possible gigs.

Tune in every Monday at 6-7pm for Johnno’s show on JOY 94.9 or get in touch if you’ve fallen desperately in love with your iso partner and need a marriage celebrant!  You can get your fill of Johnno by following his socials (@AustraliasJohnOhara & @JohnOharaMarriageCelebrant)

Since the Relink Community Cup was cancelled this year, Pop Queers brought the battle off the field and onto the airwaves. We pit the mighty MegaHertz Mumager and Triple R DJ, Bron Burton, against the ferocious Rock Dog and front woman of Lucy and the Diamonds, Lucy Dwyer.

Be sure to catch Bron on her show, Triple R’s Radio Marinara, where she puts her Marine Ecology PhD to good use, every Sunday morning, 9am-10am. If you find yourself with some extra coin, please tune in and contribute to Triple R when their annual Radiothon kicks off on August 21st 6pm.

Lucy, who has performed with Suzy Quatro’s band, and Grammy nominated, Aria winning artist, Barney McCall will be back on stage singing and acting as soon as lockdown eases. Till then, she’ll be at home with her kids, learning party tricks to show off her double uvula.

Lou Wall returns to Pop Queers after a tight victory in episode 6, this time from quarantine! After a successful run of ‘Oh No! Satan Stole My Pineal Gland’ she’s taking the stage of virtual Fringe hosting ‘Fringe Roulette‘ THIS SUNDAY!

Taking on Lou Wall is a Joy favourite, host of Homophonics and Joy’s Production Manager, Jordan Johnstone! The two duke it out over News ‘o’ the Week, all things to do with walls, national animals, and the year 2011 to see who will take home the much sought after Unicorn Slap Bracelet!

Veteran quizzer Alan Brough joins Pop Queers this week to prove his knowledge beyond the world of music by taking on returning Joylebrity, Luke Mitchell, who looks to redeem himself after his loss in Episode 4.

Alan Brough starred for many years as a team captain on Spicks and Specks and is the author of ‘Charlie and the War Against the Grannies’ which will be appearing in live musical form at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and the Sydney Opera House after the world starts to open up again.

Luke Mitchell is a long time Joylebrity working on The Woods, Checkpoint, and the Brekkie Bears, all of which are available for your bingeing pleasure in podcast form.

The winner will take home a unicorn mask that provides little in the way of Covid protection, but plenty in the way of fashion!

Responsibly zooming in from their quarantine hideouts, Catherine Barrett takes on Sam Elkin in a mental battle for a Jesus shaped pencil topper!

Catherine Barrett is the Founder and Director of Alice’s Garage, supporting the older LGBTIQ people and community, and Celebrate Ageing, helping in the fight against ageism. Currently, she is leading The Kindness Pandemic, which you can join on Facebook, and coordinating #MaskKindness to put masks on as many faces as possible.

Sam Elkin is Co-Host of Joy’s Transgender Warriors as well as the coordinator of the LGBTIQ Legal Service in St Kilda. His latest project is Transdemic, an independent podcast series exploring trans and gender diverse experiences during the pandemic.

The star of Bossy Bottom, Zoe Coombs Marr, takes on one of Joy’s bossy bottoms, James Findlay in this week’s Pop Queers!

Zoe Coombs Marr’s comedy special ‘Bossy Bottom’ is now streaming on Amazon Prime and if it leaves you dying for more, you can catch her on Stan’s Australian Lockdown Comedy Festival and in the latest episode of ABC’s ‘At Home Alone Together’.

James Findlay is a Joy veteran and has made his way around the radio scene including a stint at Triple J. Most recently he co-authored ‘Great Sexpectations’ which you can find on Amazon and will be coming out in Australia on the 30th of July!

It’s co-host against co-host as Joy favourites from Up Early with Annie and Ando go head to head.

The on-air-duo battle it out over News o’ the Week, famous duos, taxes and more to see who will be taking home the clown doll in a swing!

You can wake up with Annie and Ando on weekdays from 6:00 to 7:00 on Joy 94.9!
