As the 9/11 terrorist attacks unfolded, Portland Fire and Rescue Lt. Neil Martin and his fellow firefighters saw a familiar face on TV. They had befriended New York City firefighter William "Billy" Quick years earlier when Quick came to Oregon to climb Mt. Hood. Quick had been close to the Twin Towers when they collapsed and had survived. Martin and three other firefighters swiftly made a plan and flew to New York City to help in whatever way they could. Martin says he expected to be attending funerals or helping pick kids up from school, but since the New York City Fire Department had lost so many people in the terrorist attacks, the Portland firefighters were deployed to Ground Zero to dig through the rubble. Martin shares his story ahead of a ceremony in Portland marking the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
