Today, we'll be talking about the news that Vinay Prasad will join FDA as the next director of the Center for Biologics and Research. We'll talk about his past critiques of the agency, his disagreements with former director Peter Marks, and how is tenure might affect vaccine policy, gene therapies, and rare disease companies. I’ll be joined by our senior editor Zach Brennan, who has known Prasad for years, and reporter Lei Lei Wu.
We recorded this on April 30, four weeks after Trump’s Liberation Day, when he announced broad tariffs on just about every country on earth, set off chaos in the stock and bond markets, walked some of those tariffs back, and in general upset the world economic order.
If you’ve been reading the news, you know all of that. And if you work in the drug industry, then you’ve been watching and waiting very closely for another part of Trump’s plan, which is to put tariffs on pharmaceutical products to try and force more drugmakers to build manufacturing in the US.
This semi-regular series is an extension of out analysis newsletter Post-Hoc. Our reporters spend every day texting and calling sources, reading executive orders, and talking to each other in Slack. We wanted to bring some of that analysis that happens behind the scenes directly to you. We fire Post-Hoc live up in response to major news, at the end of news-y weeks, and to talk to experts about trends in the biopharma world. Subscribe to our Post Hoc email newsletter at endpoints.news to get notifications when we go live. We stream live on YouTube, X, and Linkedin — but if you miss us there, you can catch the recordings here. Subscribe and follow on all these platforms to stay up to date.
And see you when news breaks.
