Postcards From The Road strives to bring you stories from all walks of life, but what we rarely cover is what some would call “forced travel.” Serena Parekh is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Northeastern University in Boston, and the author of No Refuge: Ethics and the Global Refugee Crisis. Having written extensively on human rights, Parekh’s book provides an explanation of ethical approaches to the global refugee crisis, numerous stories, and first-person accounts.

Over the past two centuries, the United States has evolved in ways we could have never imagined, from its natural views to its unmatched history. National Geographic has released a new collection highlighting its legendary photo archives, delivering an up-close-and-personal view of the country. Susan Goldberg is the Editor-in-Chief of National Geographic and the Editorial Director for National Geographic Partners. The new collection, America The Beautiful: A Story in Photographs, spans 130 years. We asked Goldberg if current events played a part in the photographs chosen.

Setting out with two fellow kayakers, Darcy Gaechter celebrated her 35th birthday on a 148-day kayaking journey paddling the Amazon River. Her book, Amazon Woman: Facing Fears, Chasing Dreams, and a Quest to Kayak the Largest River from Source to Sea, recounts her heart-pounding adventure. Gaechter now leads expeditions in the continental U.S., Alaska, Ecuador, Bhutan, Nepal, and Kenya. She is also a speaker with the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies. Gaechter says her kayaking career started following high school.

The Ironman Triathlon is considered by many, to be the world's most challenging endurance event. Multiple events take place each year around the globe.  In 2017 Virginia native Ru Remennikova traveled to Australia to compete.  She also competed in Lake Placid in 2018.

The Ironman consists of 2.4 mi of swimming, followed by 112 mi of cycling, and is rounded out with 26.2 mi of running.

We asked why she decided to travel to Australia for her first Ironman competition.
