  • Episode 3320: Others now noticing the farce, so far, of “school choice” bills in the legislative special session – Pratt on Texas 10/12/2023
The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Finally someone else notices what I said Monday and Tuesday about the so-called “school choice” being considered, so far, in the legislative special session: It looks like a ruse to throw huge amounts more of our tax money to school districts while providing very little to no actual school choice.Jeramy Kitchen, of Texans For Fiscal Responsibility, gets it right with: School Choice for All… Some… Not That Many.“Records from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) show over 5 million students in the Texas government school system alone. This number does not include students who are currently in private schools or using other education options. As currently written, it appears Creighton’s legislation would, at a maximum, only service about 1 percent of existing government school students, and what’s more, once the appropriated money runs out, it reverts to a lottery system. I would hardly call that “universal.”Government schools need to earn their way in society as does every other sector. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.State Rep. Tinderholt calls on the Texas House to apologize to AG Ken Paxton for its botched impeachment scheme. Speaker Phelan retaliates with: Speaker Phelan limits Rep. • Episode 3318: School choice looking more like a ruse to hand huge money to school lobby | Dems and the border – Pratt on Texas 10/10/2023
The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: If the early bill filing and comments are the guide, school choice in the 3rd called special session of the 88th Texas Legislature appears to be not so much authentic, universal school choice but a ruse to hand over billions more of our money to the  public school lobby. SB1 is certainly not impressive as a school choice, through Education Savings Accounts, program. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT,) releases its respected legislator rankings for the 88th Regular Session. • Episode 3317: “Resign!,” Lt. Gov. Patrick tells House Speaker Phelan | Special session began today on school choice – Pratt on Texas 10/9/2023
The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: The 3rd called special session of the 88th Texas Legislature began today with school choice being the biggest item on the call from Governor Abbott. Today, Senator Creighton released SB2 which will give a clue as to how the Senate will try to gain (buy?) the votes of those opposed to school choice. Essentially it is a another huge money handout to traditional, socialist-model, government school districts. Many of the pro-socialist model, anti-school choice people claim the state only spends about $6100 per student, the basic allotment, and that claim is often echoed in the press. It is a lie. Texas spends over $12,000 per student and over $15,000 per student if facility costs are included. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.In another vile and bizarre move by Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, aided by Leftwing press, people across the state are being linked to Nazi’s, Hitler, and the Hamas attack on Israel because an objectionable person was seen going into and coming out of a Texas business. It is so bad that Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick called this morning for Speaker Phelan to resign. After the House Managers doxxed him last week, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says he is filing criminal complaints against them for violating state law. Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. That was the best headline today on the big news of the Biden Administration admitting that physical barriers are needed. • Episode 3311: Texas gun, self-defense culture wows WaPo writer | Local gov’t mission creep abounds – Pratt on Texas 9/29/2023
The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: A reporter from another world, not Texas, came to Texas and was shocked by our comfort around firearms and culture of self-defense. Like many pseudo-intellectuals, underlying her surprise is an odd idea that we know when and where, specifically, crime is going to occur. If we could predict such, we’d have no crime. Thus, carrying a firearm everywhere is required if one is to have effective self protection. Also, does the woman not know that Texas was born into the issue of self-defense and guns?
