For first time mamas, the thought of labour can be quite daunting. There are many unknowns and so much anticipation as you await the birth of your baby. Everyone has a different experience in labour and as women, it is an incredibly bonding and empowering experience to share our birth stories.
In this episode, I’m joined by a beautiful new mama, Pamela, who is one of the FitNest Mama members and we talk today about her experience during pregnancy, labour and beyond. Pamela shares about her preparation for birth, how the birth eventuated and the reality of labour versus her expectations while pregnant. She talks about the unexpected turn her pregnancy took, what it was like dealing with a forceps delivery and episiotomy and some of the everyday challenges she faces now with a new baby
Pamela also shares some words of wisdom for pregnant mothers and the biggest milestones her and her baby have reached in the first 6 weeks after birth. Whether you love or hate the idea of hearing a birth story, I’m sure this episode will leave you feeling empowered and ready to tackle birth, no matter what your story looks like.

What do you know about gestational diabetes? Do you know why Australia screens every woman during pregnancy? Like a lot of women, the first time you might have heard about gestational diabetes is when you were tested for it yourself. Who can forget that sickly sweet glucose drink and hours of waiting for blood test results?
In this episode, I’m joined by Dr Tom Cade, an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in full time private practice at Epworth Freemasons and St Vincent’s Private Hospitals in Melbourne. Dr Tom completed his research doctorate thesis on the modern management and implications of gestational diabetes, for which he won the Melbourne University prize for the most clinically impactful thesis in 2017.
Dr Tom joins me today to shed some light on gestational diabetes, what it is and some of the misconceptions surrounding it. He discusses some of the ways we can avoid potential risk and why we shouldn’t feel guilty if we are diagnosed during pregnancy.

It is such a joyous occasion when you first get to bring your baby home. You start to experience life in a whole new way with this little person by your side and it is such a special time. But it can also be extremely overwhelming. You may experience emotions such as anxiety and depression that may not previously have been present for you and this is the topic we are diving into today.
In today’s episode, I have the pleasure of chatting to Josie Smyth. She is a Melbourne mother of two and has experienced postnatal depression (PND) twice. After recovering, Josie founded Smiling after PND which exists to raise awareness around postnatal depression. Josie is committed to encouraging high-level education around PND, to break the stigma or shame around such difficult feelings, and to support our loved ones through these challenging times.
We discuss the signs and symptoms of postnatal depression, how to seek treatment and what you can do to support someone you know who is going through a hard time. It was also great to chat about the things that might not be helpful or to avoid for those suffering from postnatal depression.
Please be advised that this episode comes with a trigger warning as we do discuss quite significant mental health challenges. If this is triggering for you, please reach out to the resources we have included below.

I also work with many women who have already given birth and are needing to regain some strength in that all important area. It can be daunting with so much unknown and I’m here to break it down into bite size pieces so you can approach labour with confidence.
In this episode, I dive into the nitty gritty of the types of issues women can experience after birth and how to regain your strength and confidence to live the life you want to live after your baby has arrived. I discuss topics that some women might be a little too embarrassed to ask about, such as incontinence, trouble with constipation, vaginal prolapse and how to have the correct posture while on the toilet.
I also discuss relaxation strategies and workouts you can do at home and the importance of developing a pelvic floor strengthening routine. Remember to sign up to the FREE 5 Days, 5 Ways to Prepare for Birth event to help you confidently prepare for labour and feel empowered about childbirth.

I’m excited to introduce you to a special guest today. It’s my first chat on this podcast with an every day mama with the intention of discussing the realities of pregnancy, birth and becoming a new mama.
Brie is not only a new mama but also one of the founding members of FitNest Mama and has been with us since our doors first opened. Brie joins me today to talk through her experiences from planning to have a baby, the details of her labour and her personal journey becoming a mama for the first time. She also shares about travelling with a newborn baby following her move from Melbourne to Edinburgh.
In this episode, Brie shares about hypnobirthing and how the practise helped her throughout labour. She talks through what it’s like to have an epidural and an episiotomy, her experience with breastfeeding and the beautiful moments of one on one time with her partner and baby. She also shares some words of wisdom for new mamas, including the importance of letting dads do things the way they want to do it.
If you’re a new mama, pregnant or thinking about having a baby soon, this episode is for you. I hope it encourages you to hear from someone else’s personal experience and give you confidence that you can have a positive pregnancy, birthing and postpartum experience.

If you’re about to have a baby, this episode is absolutely one for you. Not only is it for you though, I highly suggest popping this episode into your birth partner’s ears so that they can get all the tips that are shared today.
When you’re in labour, it can be difficult for your partner to know what to do. They can see you’re in pain and they want to help, but sometimes what they’re offering isn’t of much support to you. Your needs in that moment may be quite specific or you might not really know how they can help.
Today on the podcast I am delighted to be speaking with Rebecca McQueen to discuss 5 tips to help your birth partner support and assist you during labour. Rebecca is a registered nurse, certified childbirth educator and clinical hypnotherapist. Bec is the founder of Birth Sense Australia, an online childbirth education company that teaches parents coping skills for a more positive birthing experience. She is an absolute wealth of knowledge around how to make birthing less scary and more empowering.
