Wes is not glorifying prison life. Instead, he is talking you out of if, of gangster life. Because he believes that not everyone has to learn it the hard way, just like he did. Drastic jumps of anything will always turn out to be a detriment, so you have to earn it, and work hard for it - your muscles, your wealth, your mental health - anything you wanted to have in life.
