Presents the eleventh and twelfth volumes of the series “Civitas et humanitas”, concerning respectively: Crisis of ideologies and new ethical-social instances and crisis of totality and risk of survival.
These Annals of ethical-political culture, created for the initiative and generosity of Prof. Alberto Nave – coordinator of the Civitas et Humanitas Movement, generated in connection with the University of lower Lazio of Cassino – connected to the Center for Italian Philosophy, today directed by Aldo Meccariello with headquarters in Terni, can today celebrate two volumes XI and XII of the series. Both help us to put under the spotlight of our intellectual light full of love (Paradiso, canto XXX, v. 40), two notable profiles, both significantly reread under the profile of the crisis, to which some of the Authors of the volume oppose possible exits in the path of ethics and even in the path of the religious. Pareyson already conceived the idea of God as crucial in the definition of existentialism as a philosophy of the finite, destined to resolve itself, as a philosophy of choice, in spiritualism. For Pareyson, the historical crisis is a cultural and above all philosophical crisis: the crisis of philosophy, for which, with a chiasmus of a typically Castellian tone, the philosophy of the crisis is the crisis of philosophy, it is the crisis of idealism in its Hegelian culmination. In turn, Castelli is the one who remains most, also problematically, tied to the idea of existentialism as a philosophy of crisis understood as structural. Castelli's reflections. which introduced the single issue of «Archivio di filosofia» of 1945 and also the political sense of the organization of the 1946 congress, directed at that time towards the easiest reading at a superficial level: the crisis is the abyss into which the entire world and Europe even more found itself precipitated at the end of the Second World War, the abyss of material destruction, of the millions of deaths, of the extermination in the concentration and extermination camps, of which there was still little awareness, of the dehumanization legacy of totalitarianism. Existentialism would be, as a philosophy closely connected to life and philosophy of individual commitment and responsibility, the possible cultural response to the metaphysical abstractions of idealism and its epigones. Christian existentialism, described by these authors as a philosophy of crisis, could only translate into the crisis of philosophy, so that the alternative of Christian existentialism founds spiritualism, providing the reasons for the choice, once made one can resume philosophizing, despite the crisis. Christian existentialism, which Castelli reluctantly took up, certainly does not present itself as a philosophy of transit towards another, nor even as a foundation in the sense proposed by Pareyson. The exclusion that Castelli gave is a subtle but clear ridge: «A Christian philosophy is possible if it is anti-intellectual», or if it is an edifying and persuasive philosophy, that is to say a philosophy that assumes the ultimate incomprehensibility of existence and choice.
In the everlasting contrast between crisis and progress, between the cognitive and transformative power of the human person and the unpredictability of his creations, the sense of human limit is proposed again, a limit that, apparently overcome or moved further and further forward, reappears in the aspect of the absolute unpredictability of all the consequences of the choices that are made: it is a total ecological and environmental crisis, which no longer spares any recess of our planet; we are in the crisis and in the total eclipse of great guiding ideas of the past that had maintained and supported every social and civil development; the hidden reasons that remain hidden and unexplored for the current upheavals; it is a ruinous parable of our time, in which a faith in "progress", typical of times that are increasingly distant from ours, from the certainties of modernity are now supplanted by the "post-modern", which seems to have put every possibility into crisis and question. In a stimulating, acute and lively booklet, "The Fourth Man. Postmodernity or the crisis of modernity”, Gianfranco Morra effectively outlined the stages of the descending parabola of man’s self-understanding in the West: the “first” man is the homo theoreticus, the cosmotheoròs of Greek antiquity, the man who discovers through wonder and amazement the sources of “philosophy”, because all knowledge that man can achieve is first of all philìa, friendship, of the sophòn, of the wise man, who can only be God; and it is such also as science, and not only as logic and dialectics of pure concepts; he is followed by the man of the Christian faith, entirely open and devoted to transcendence but certainly not incapable of taking up and preserving, keeping alive, the motives and impulses of the “cosmotheoretical” of the Greeks; At the beginning of the modern age, the man of “reason” follows, understood as the universal capacity for free thought and capable of embracing all of humanity in the spirit of cosmopolitanism and universal brotherhood. This is the man who still believes strongly in the universality of moral values, the man who obeys the imperative sapere aude, have the courage to know, forcefully recalled by Kant (“What is Enlightenment”). This is followed by the great warnings of Husserl (The Crisis of European Science and Transcendental Phenomenology, 1936), who never ceased to ask himself the reasons why there is a profound crisis in the sciences which, despite their continuous successes, always retain their enduring relevance. Perhaps philosophy no longer plays any relevant role, the field being entirely occupied by scientific knowledge, the only reliable voice and, today, by its hyper-technological results, which are the cyborg and the so-called artificial intelligence?
The eleventh volume of Civitas et Humanitas is, therefore, appropriately titled Crisis of ideologies and new ethical-social instances, Mondostudio, Cassino 2020, pages 244. The specific section of the volume, which is also an annual scientific journal, presents the contributions of Franco Bosio, Teresa Serra, Giovanni Turco, Alberto Nave, Fiorenza Taricone, Clementina Gily Reda, Orlando Todisco, Michele Indellicato, Giuseppe Cantarano, Pietro Boccia and Lelio Imbriglio. Wanting to focus, for reasons of time, especially on the twelfth volume - which seems to me more akin to the developments of the volume currently being prepared -, I would like to recall here the question, in that eleventh volume, posed by Pino Cantillo, on "how to overcome the terrible year 2020, which marked the beginning of what would become the long season of the global pandemic". The question that circulates in the essays of the eleventh volume is related, precisely, to how to place oneself beyond the crisis of ideologies, especially of scientific-technological ideology, of feminist ideology, linked to the question of emancipationist-feminist movements, not without looking, as Orlando Todisco does in the volume under discussion, at the sacred, in an era that someone has defined as post-sacral and in which, as Indellicato recalls, both personalism as anti-ideology returns to the fore, as well as, as Cantarano recalls, as an opportunity for a relaunch of political ontology, or, as Pietro Boccia recommends, a stimulus to re-start on the paths of permanent and inclusive education; or, on a similar wavelength, re-launch, as Imbrigli does, new pedagogical-formative instances for the exit from the crisis of ideologies. All this not without a re-opening...

    Between faith and tradition.
The role of religion in the actions and perceptions of emigrants from the Italian community of origin.
    (Pasquale Giustiniani)
    • - Introduction
    • Among the processes used by travelers and migrants to create a "home" outside their territories of origin, there is also the glue of religion, in Italy mainly in its Christian form, especially devotional rather than cultic. This glue almost acts as a suture thread which, at the same time, allows us to imagine and "remember" the past and re-attach the limbs and limbs of a collective body, which has often experienced social violence, or has been forced to leave their original places for economic and political reasons.
    • In order to rebuild their personal and family identity, young and former young people return, often willingly, where rites and rituals are still important, which underline their original belonging to a true sacred order, defined by faiths , religions and, as far as the south is concerned, by religious folklore and popular devotions, more or less contiguous to the standard set by historical religions. In particular, popular devotion, managed and coordinated by the particular Churches, appears on the one hand as the suture to an adequate and institutional expression of lived faith; on the other hand, it preserves ancestral folkloric characters which, at times, are more the expression of an atavistic popular memory than the fruit of regimentation in the institutional forms of institutional faith
    • - In which religious context does the return to the roots take place?
    • Comparing the sad political situation of the city of Mytilene under the tyranny of Myrsilus, Alcaeus found no better metaphor than that of a ship tossed by the waves, subjected to the struggle between the winds, with the mast in tatters and the sail completely torn. This metaphor has become a real topos of literature, political examination and even religious meditation in the period of the post-covid 19 pandemic crisis. When, during the first act of "The Tempest" (1611-1612) by William Shakespeare, the Boatswain, during a story "in retrospect", shouts: «Lock up, lock out! Lower the sails – let's go offshore! Lock out!», the sailors - now in the vortex of a storm which, although "enchanted", is still making its terrible damage felt -, cannot help but highlight their extreme vulnerability and the outcome of the prayer: «We are lost ! Let's pray, let's pray! We are lost! Everyone!" . And so prayer arises almost spontaneously on the lips of many in those dark moments, to the point that they seem to be able to anaesthetise, together with the memory and historical roots of the literary characters captured by Shakespeare's spell, even the same latent trust, highlighted precisely by prayer, in the presence of a divine in human affairs, capable, that is, of being able to curb and reduce the evil effects of death and suffering in a plagued humanity.
    • Almost forced, in the midst of the tragedy of a storm or the inevitability of a shipwreck, to choose only between possible alternatives, without true freedom of choice from scratch, not only the subject - a modern discovery! -, but even the god - the divine of modernity seems to have become impotent in the face of ultra-modern events, which seem to happen, as we read in The Shakespearean Tempest, under the influence of a demonic power.
    • - The institutional crisis of religions in the West                                                                      On the level of socio-religious phenomena, ultramodernity or postmodernity also means, among other things, secularism. It produces at least three distortions in social structures and civilization: thinking that we can do without faith in the name of arbitrariness and personally verified discovery; cultivate a mechanistic and theriomorphic vision of the human being, to the detriment of human dignity and respect for human morality; attribute a high success of the technique with its principles of all-out efficiency. Ultimately, it is the social outcome of a theoretical transition from eternal truths to developing doctrines.
    • Postmodernity also means, in this sense, religious pluralism. After the religious wars in France and the Thirty Years' War had devastated Europe, the Enlightenment attempted to pierce the veil of superstition, violence, intolerance, to arrive in a new era of peace, love, tolerance. An attempt which then failed, leading to blind rationalism and prevailing secularism.
    • From this drift - which, on a macro-cultural level, is configured today through the terms of secularism and religious indifference, as well as nihilism and trans-theism - the same way of posing the questions by Christian thought would not be exempt , since its origins. It is a fact that the encounter of the Christian gospel with the cities of the Mediterranean takes place in an intricate set of elements that we can well define, now for then, pluralistic, qualified as it was by various cults, religions, values, ideas, economic structures. .. In this complex world, Christians, rather than presenting a culture other than and antithetical to the pre-existing ones, contrasting it with a unique and exclusive truth, eliding any other contemporary perspective, prefer to wedge themselves into the multiplicity of backgrounds, occupy the same physical places as others, assume the same grammars, the same representational techniques, deal with the lemmas and concepts in use, inhabit the same places and woods, frequent the same temples and, thus, create topographical, geographical and cultural roots. But, very soon, they re-semantise and creatively re-signify all the previous structures, that is, by imitating on the reflected level the very kenosis of the Word, they allow the cultural heritage referring to Christ to be "incarnated" again in pre-existing cultures. existing and to regenerate them, so to speak, from within, sometimes proceeding with real linguistic re-inventions by appropriately re-semantizing everything.
    • - Conclusion
    • Qualified by the mobility and complexity of the world, extreme and exasperated pluralism, which sometimes leads to a false certainty (homologous, however, to a certain anxiety to find certainties, which accompanies at least other aspects of postmodernism), sometimes to consumerist conformism, to relativism extreme, to indifference, even accentuating exasperated individualism in the ethical field, the epistemic and ethical climate that we live in today - and our increasingly "sparse" young people live (in a demographic sense, in a civilization tending to be old and with one generation less) - is there to point out, especially in the latest nomadic generations, the tragic consequence entailed by the fall of fixed points to refer to and the correlative exhaustion of questions about the being, the true, the beautiful, the value, the meaning of existence, the very meaning of religion and of the human being's relationship with God.
    • We postmodern inhabitants of traditional cities and, in any case, nomads for work reasons, cross paths and mix with refugees, emigrants and Mediterranean travelers who land on our coasts in search of an economic and social Eden: while our traditional cultures follow wavering processes of secularization and de-secularization, pushing all the ancient paradigms and ancient traces back into the "inner crypt", and we do not know how to go back down and back up the ancient stairs, or we suddenly realize that we are all in the same boat, we witness the social and religious appropriation of our ancient places, reliving them as so many appeals to re-appropriate our ancient gods and not let them sink with our boat. And the processes of ancient religious roots, crossing new boats that ply Mediterranean routes and territories, re-emerg

Aldo Di Mauro, In the shadows. Essential stories of common people, Preface by Tiuna Notarbartolo, Introduction by Giuseppe Giorgio, Giannini Editore, Naples 2024, pp. 89
The truth of these essential stories of ordinary people can be seen in the last pages of Aldo Di Mauro, through the story, or rather the silhouette, of Pietro Sarno, who «on the first floor of via Tribunali... timidly sticks his head out a little to listen the life that echoes outside" (p. 85). Peter's is precisely "a life in the shadows" (ibidem), as only sometimes does he "exit his shadow", and then immediately re-enter it: a shadow "in which he decided to live surrounded by books, notebooks, sheets of paper on which he jots down thoughts destined to be thrown away after his death" (ibidem).
And in this way, in every single story narrated, the reader grasps the very meaning of these micro-stories of couples, individuals, adults and children.
In the places narrated in these agile and essential pages, there are not only PCs and new media, but also recorder tapes (p. 28), radios that are turned on with the knobs (p. 29), lights that they illuminate but, above all, they are lowered to create darkness, or rather to generate the right atmosphere of twilight (p. 51).
And in each story, here is the essential daily life, made up of women and men, of adults and children, especially of couple relationships, in which the emancipated woman could cause anxiety and depression in her partner, or in which the man could rediscover of having been too busy with the external aspects of the partner and of having, thus, lost the soul of the woman and, above all, of his own woman. This is what happens to Enrico, who cynically imagines what life will be like in the afterlife without her, who meanwhile betrays him here on earth: «You know how happy the soul will be of those who witness how their woman is having fun ? While she, the heartbroken widow, is happy with your achieved spirituality, you verify what kind of slut you have lived with for so many years"
In the dim light, the features of faces and intimate depths appear, or rather flash, of little ones, of young people, of women and men, who delve into themselves before our eyes, not in an imaginary "psychoanalytic session" (p. 40) , but rather to grasp, beyond the differences of classes and classes, temperaments and clichés, the very truth of the human person.

Aldo Di Mauro, In penombra.

Conference: Say God or keep silent?
Speeches by prof. Gianpiero Tavolaro, Extraordinary PFTIM; of the prof. Sisto Peluso, Giosue Carducci classical high school of Nola.
    Say God or keep silent?
(un)actuality of the issue? The question of saying God concerns the way of speaking about a greatness/entity that is in itself immeasurable: not only ideal or belonging to the religious metaverse, but perhaps, if not completely non-existent, at least unspeakable...
(in)usefulness of a revelation? The question of God recalls another: that of revelation, or unveiling, manifestation, but also thickening of the veil, darkness. Due to an unexpected historical twist, the Enlightenment awakening that should have brought humanity out of its state of minority and rationally revealed everything, in the long run turned out to be less respectful of the nature of that divinity for which only theocratic chains were suffered...
(un)reasonableness of theological languages. If today the so-called Generation Z (born at the turn of the millennium until 2013) accuses our system of having caused a general (irreversible?) deterioration, it is because due to functional languages, they have not seen it reach operational efficiency ; of mathematics applied to physics, and today of algorithms applied to thinking machines, as imposed by the nascent society of the metaverse, somehow I. Kant (1724-1804) had already polemically warned that a visionary use of return Platonism cannot be pursued in support of theocratic linguistic hegemonies that claim to give name and word to the X, to the transcendental unknown, of which there are no phenomenal clues to think about intellectually...

Premio Cimitile, lunedì 10 giugno 2024, ore 19
    Convegno: Dire Dio o tacere?
Interventi del prof. Gianpiero Tavolaro, Straordinario PFTIM; del prof. Sisto Peluso, Liceo classico Giosue Carducci di Nola.

    Dire Dio o tacere?
    • (in)utilità di una rivelazione? La questione Dio ne richiama un’altra: quella di rivelazione, ovvero dis-velamento, manifestazione, ma anche infittirsi del velo, oscurità. Per una inattesa carambola storica, il risveglio illuministico che avrebbe dovuto far uscire l’umanità dal suo stato di minorità e svelare razionalmente tutto, alla lunga si è rivelato meno rispettoso della natura di quella divinità della quale non si patirono che  catene teocratiche...
    • (ir)ragionevolezza dei linguaggi teologici. Se oggi la cosiddetta Generazione Z (nati a cavaliere del millennio fino al 2013) rinfaccia al nostro sistema l’aver causato un generale (irreversibile?) deterioramento, è perché a causa dei linguaggi funzionali, non l’ha visto arrivare all’efficienza operativa; delle matematiche applicate alla fisica, e oggi degli algoritmi applicati a macchina pensanti, come imposto dalla nascente società del metaverso, in qualche modo I. Kant  (1724-1804) aveva già avvertito polemicamente che non si può perseguire un uso visionario del platonismo di ritorno a supporto delle egemonie linguistiche di tipo teocratico che pretendono di dar nome e parola alla X, all’incognita trascendentale, di cui non si danno indizia fenomenici da pensare intellettualmente...

    * Build an increasingly inclusive school, to reduce dispersion, develop all the skills necessary to be full citizens, facilitate relationships and promote greater social cohesion.

    Michel Foucault
    Already in 1966, Michel Foucault, speaking of a genealogical, and therefore no longer essentialist, approach to the problem of the human, observed that today it has become a hyper-technological human within an ecological niche and an intelligent bioterritory (where, not only human beings and animals non-humans, but plants also show perceptive modalities albeit of a systemic and not individual type);
There is first of all the need to thematise its relationships with transhumanism, both for what is common there and for what distinguishes them. Both perspectives - posthuman and transhuman - adopt the neo-Darwinian and technoprogressive view, and both exclude the ontological consistency of human nature.
    Foucault and Deleuze
Deleuz's reflection on the body without organs represents, in particular, a very important conceptual turning point.
The overman is now conceived as a variable application of a field of forces, a composition of them that is affected by a cultural transformation that can no longer be expressed in the reassuring lines of humanism.

Does not this transformation of the body plan, which is expressed both in today's body modeling practices and in the perspectives of an imaginary centered on the man-machine hybrid, also express a still subjective type of planning?
How do you live being a bat?
On Sunday 24 June 2012, the giant tortoise Lonesome George died in the Galapagos National Park. The tortoise was more than a hundred years old and the last member of his species. Fausto Llerena, Lonesome George's expert guardian, had found the dead animal, lying on the path that led to a pool of water.
On June 25, 1982 – the film adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel about android dreams was screened for the first time: Blade Runner, by Ridley Scott.
The novel and film even raise the question of whether and how it is possible to distinguish animals, humans and machines, in this case regarding their ability to feel empathy. In the novel, 'Mercerism' represents the religion of empathy

So what is it like to be a bat?
Almost an extension of the question posed by Thomas Nagel in 1974, What is it like to be a bat?!, Batty saves the Blade Runner from falling into the void and pronounces the famous parting words.
«I've seen things you wouldn't believe. Attack the burning ships off Orion. I saw the C-beams glowing in the darkness of the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in the rain. Time to die".
And Rick Deckard, perhaps also a replicant, comments: «I don't know why he saved my life. Perhaps in those last moments he loved life more than he had ever loved before. Not just his life, anyone's life, my life. All he wanted were the same answers we all want. Where am I from? Where am I going? How much time do I have? All I could do was sit there and watch him die."

Two positions in the debates on the boundaries between animals, humans and machines.
One camp claims a privileged moral or cognitive position for humans (which would mean, then, that animals cannot speak, and that machines cannot think intentionally.
The other camp proposes its fundamental criticism of human history, outlining a portrait of man as a failed animal, or as a dysfunctional machine par excellence. The human being is praised because he has given an incomparable value to arts, techniques and systems of law; on the other hand, these would also be crueler than all animals, a global parasite, and inferior to machines

    From posthuman to transhuman
Transhumanism, in turn, is characterized by the theorization of the perspective of active "overcoming" of the human, through the technological enhancement of the organism. It has been incisively stated for transhumanism (and mutatis mutandis it is believed that it can also be extended to posthumanism): «We transhumanists have given ourselves a clear and ambitious objective: to create the conditions for a moral and intellectual revolution of Promethean orientation».
The term posthumanism was coined by Julian Huxley (in 1957), to theorize the epochal transformation of the human, into something completely different from the human, compared to which the human appears only as an antecedent destined to pass away.
