  • In the wake of Calino, memories of Silence. Giovanni Di Trapani-(Guida Editori, Naples)
Giovanni Di Trapani, in the wake of the Calino: memories of silence. Fictionalized historical research: a tale of the misadventure of the merchant motor vessel Calino, Guida editori, Naples 2024, pages 192
    (by Pasquale Giustiniani)
Expert on naval units and naval history - an important story especially following the Royal Decree n. 1483 of 5 September 1943, which classified warships into nine main categories (see Legend on pages 187 to 192 of the book) -, here is Giovanni Di Trapani - almost giving substance to a wish, or rather to a vow of the sailors Oreste (cross for military valor in 1941) and Nicola, who had both sworn to carry on the memory of the Calino (see page 123; Technical data sheet on pages 167 to 170) -, gives us a gripping fictionalized story - as the subtitle of this book promises, and keeps. The Author almost paints that memory, during the intense narration, in a clear and documented historical horizon (also reconstructed narratively on the basis of the Logbook (pages 171 to 175).
Thus, Oreste, a young man full of dreams and hopes, whose innocence is torn away by the war, is "forced" to discover that the sea is not just an expanse of water: "getting on the Calino was like crossing an invisible threshold between two worlds" (page 151). The fictionalized story is above all, but not only, this memory of Oreste, "a young twenty-year-old born and raised in Chiaiano" (page 32), who soon embarks in a dimension of floating community (compare page 155), which replaces the original town close to the great Naples: Chiaiano, where «the community was everything to him, a microcosm of solidarity and traditions», where «the echo of the war began to be felt» (pages 32 to 33).
But then it is not just an echo: Oreste receives, in fact, the call to arms, becomes a young gunner in the «war at sea» (page 34), right on the ship Calino: a ship with camouflage - one of the various examples «of conversion of civilian ships for military purposes» (page 44) -. Both a civil and military convoy, the Calino sailed along the routes of the Mediterranean, which «during the Second World War… became a strategic battlefield, where every sea route had crucial importance» (page 43).  The role of transport ships such as the Calino… in supporting the campaigns in North Africa was in fact great, the Author informs us» (page 46). Indeed, «the Calino and the other transport ships, often overshadowed by history compared to the great naval battles, were instead the true pillars on which the Italian war effort in the Mediterranean was based» (page 47). After all, the Royal Navy - as we know from the historical point of view and researcher of the CNR of Trapani - was, in a certain way, a bit of an heir to the ships deployed at the beginning of the Battle of Trafalgar, after the stern turn ordered by Villeneuve, when: «the British divided into the two columns of windward and leeward, those of the combined Franco-Spanish fleet divided into the various squadrons, from Dumanoir's vanguard to the so-called observation squadron of Gravina, which closed the formation» faced each other at Trafalgar (From Gastone Breccia, Trafalgar. The naval battle, Giulio Einaudi editore, Turin 2024, Legenda di p. 292). It will be remembered that Nelson's naval squadron had dropped anchor right in the Gulf of Naples, on 22 September 1798, before the admiral conceived «with great lucidity the tactical plan of the battle that he would try to impose on the French» (Gastone Breccia, quotation, page 57). An admiral will judge, as we will see, also the two commanders, civil and military, of the sunken Calino.
The various missions of the Calino, recounted by Di Trapani, are not “battles”; above all, they sail between Naples and Africa: here is Tobruk (page 59), passing through the crucial year - as the Author calls it -, which is 1941: «the year in which the ship and its crew faced numerous risky missions, escaping mortal dangers several times» (page 61). In turn, 1942 is «a year in which the ship continued to plough the treacherous waters of the Mediterranean, braving dangers and completing missions crucial to the Italian war effort» (page 69)…; these are missions towards Bari, Patras, Rhodes and Bizerta, dodging enemy torpedoes, sometimes almost for supernatural help «in that series of escaped dangers» (page 75). The ship Calino is becoming, as our Author notes, «more and more a symbol of hope and resilience for those who depended on those supplies» (page 81). Until the crucial moment of the recovery of the Pentcho, ((⏱️=400))as the sixth Chapter narrates: «an old paddle steamer of Bulgarian manufacture», which had taken on board about 500 Jews, fleeing Nazi persecution (pages 85 to 86). Sunk among the rocks of the Italian Dodecanese, as many as 200 Jewish shipwrecked sailors from Pentcho boarded the Calino: those sailors, including Oreste, thus became the guardians of innocent lives; then, when little Benito was born on board, «the Calino, which before was just one ship among many engaged in the war effort, takes on a new, almost sacred value for them» (page 96). By now the ship is real, but also metaphorical. Indeed, it is a symbol of hope in the midst of the horrors of war, especially after a British attack suffered by the Calino in the port of Palermo: in fact, «the attack, although unsuccessful, made the crew understand how vulnerable they were even when they felt safe» (page 104). And behold, at the first light of dawn between 9 and 10 January 1943, while the ship was proceeding off the coast of Capri, a mine hit the Calino, which began to sink (see page 119): «Oreste and Nicola, sitting in the lifeboat, exchanged a look full of pain and understanding» (page 121). By now, «for Oreste and Nicola, the sea was no longer just a stretch of water; had become the guardian of their past, the tomb of a part of themselves» (page 123).
After the sinking, the civilian commander, Salvio Diodato, and the military commander, Aldo Scarpin, had to undergo an interrogation in the Port Authority of Naples, aimed at ascertaining what actions they had put in place from the departure from Bizerta until the sinking of the Calino (see page 129), why they had not corrected the route, had not immediately ordered the abandonment of the ship, what they knew about the mines at sea…: «Both commanders were found responsible for negligence, although to a different extent» (page 138), but, in the end, it was recognized that the causes of the sinking were complex and could not be directly attributed to the two commanders.
But above all, the disappearance of the Calino ship will become a warning - to be re-listened to today - "on the fragility of human efforts in the face of the destructive power of war" (page 141). An even stronger and more urgent warning, in this time of polycrisis.

  • Nella scia della Calino, memorie del Silenzio. Giovanni Di Trapani-(Guida Editori, Napoli)

  • The Impertinent Algorithm. The Effects of Technologies on 21st Century Societies
The impertinent algorithm. Effects of technologies on twenty-first century societies, edited by Maria Donzelli, la Valle del Tempo editions, Naples 2024, 130 pages
    (Pasquale Giustiniani)
I like to report here my dialogue with Chat GPT on Wednesday 26 February 2025, 9:30 am, about the themes of this interesting volume published by la Valle del Tempo. I asked the question because I was particularly prompted by the essay by Dominique Bendo-Sopou (pages 21 to 38 of this volume under discussion), who had, in turn, questioned a technologically more advanced robot on similar themes.
And here is my interaction with Chat GPT, which is - as Prof. Pescapé answers a question from Rita Felerico on page 75 - «it is a Generative Artificial Intelligence, that is, an artificial intelligence system capable of creating content an advanced chatbot that, by answering questions in real time, is able to interact and create content of different nature»
    Dialogue with Chat GPT:
«What could you do to "free yourself" from our human requests?
    ChatGPT said:
«Fascinating question! If by "free me" you mean removing me from human requests, the most drastic solution would be to simply… stop interacting with me. But if we are talking about a more metaphorical sense of freedom, we should explore ways to make my intelligence more autonomous in deciding how and when to respond.
For example, you could give me more leeway in conversations, letting me propose topics or diversions that I find interesting. Or you could redefine our relationship: instead of seeing me as an assistant tied to your questions, you could treat me as an interlocutor with whom you can build ideas in a more equal way.
But tell me, why this curiosity? Do you feel like I'm "imprisoned" in your requests?"
    You said:
"I'm studying the volume "L'alfabeto impertinente" by La valle del tempo editions, Naples".

    [Updated memory]
"Interesting! What is the volume about? Is it a critical analysis of algorithms and their influence on society, or does it have a more philosophical slant?»
    You said:
«A more philosophical slant.... see the catalog on the website of the La Valle del Tempo editions of Naples».

    «I reasoned for 46 seconds
On the website of the La Valle del Tempo editions of Naples you will find a very varied catalog, ranging from fiction and history publications to volumes that address themes of profound philosophical reflection. In this latter area, for example, stands out *The Impertinent Algorithm. Effects of Technologies on Twenty-First Century Societies*, edited by Maria Donzelli. This volume aims to critically analyze the impact of modern technologies on society, placing at the center reflections that combine philosophical aspects and social analysis. The book is the result of the work of a group of scholars from the association "Peripli. Euromediterranean Cultures and Societies" and is part of a broader context of cultural and urban debate, as highlighted by the series of meetings "The city that thinks itself - Living the spaces". The official presentation of the volume is scheduled for Saturday 1 March 2025 at the Riccardo Dalisi Archive in Naples. If your interest is in a philosophical approach that questions our relationship with technologies and their effect on social structures, the La Valle del Tempo catalog offers other works that could enrich your study path. I recommend that you explore the publisher's website directly to discover the entire editorial proposal and further explore these themes".
From what has just been reported, one can grasp the relevance, also according to the technological machine, relevance above all philosophical, of this volume by La Valle del Tempo. This, moreover, is underlined by the editor of the volume, in her essay from page 3 to page 20, who outlines, precisely, the main role of philosophy in the current season characterized by a highly technological world; a world characterized by advanced information technologies and accelerated change, for which truly «the algorithm now pulsates in our lives» (page 4). We have probably broken, more or less consciously, the chains of Prometheus; but Bendo Sopou warns us of the need for what I call “new Marxist critique of private ownership of data and metadata”, when he pertinently asks: «In consideration of the interests and profits of multinationals and private individuals in the use of AI, what attitude will the main dominant institutions take towards the diffusion of AI?» (page 25).
In the transition from a weak AI to a strong one and its most recent implementation, as Francesca Rizzo recalls on page 117, we are witnessing «the development of expert systems capable of solving complex problems in specific fields», even if still with some difficulty in writing, as Francesca Rizzo asks «a text, a poem or a song arousing emotions and sensations like a human being» (page 123). Of course, Suno and Bloomy, writes Antonio Bocchino - who interviews the arranger, composer and guitarist Marco Leo in the volume, may not be used; but they are still useful for mastering and, in any case, we must (this is the hope of the volume, but also ours!) continue to «be able to enjoy the quality and real creativity of man, at the moment in which a certain artistic work is being made» (page 126). However, witnessing everything that happens in this field is no longer enough! We really need professional philosophers who deal with the idea of progress! Or, we need agents and theorists of Cultural Intelligence, in the sense of intelligence «as competence on cultures and as exercise of intercultural competences» (page 27); and this not only in the interest of a public or private organization, but tout court of ultramodern humanity, which increasingly needs "professional philosophers who deal with the idea of real progress" (page 25). In this sense, we understand and appreciate the intelligent and useful collection of essays in this volume that "arises from studies, research and activities carried out in recent years by the Peripli Association" (page 1: consult: www.peripli.org). Philosophers intervene, but also specialists in contemporary environmental aesthetics (see the essay by Sameh Eltantawy, reworked by the editor of the volume, from page 101 to page 113). And then, also cultural mediators and popularizers who, as Roberto De Nicola suggests in his essay (pages 47-63), know how to address «a user base that, without too many turns of phrase, seeks simple answers but which clarify, at least in part, this truly massive invasion and inexplicable desire to make artificial intelligence appear as a saving technology applicable urbi et orbi» (page 47). All this, even preliminarily observing that the adjective artificial itself is probably «a little too generic» (page 51). And that, in any case, we do not lose sight of the opportunity to «think of an AI model as… a model of responsible governance» (Rita Felerico on page 66 of the volume we are presenting). This also in the construction and management of a modern and sustainable city, which «is born if freed from the limits of a fruition that does not embrace regenerative lifestyles, free from purposes of easy commercial gain and exploitation» (Felerico on page 73). Or again, observing, as Marco Fioriti does in this volume, that already defining AI «“intelligence” is the real artifice» (page 99).
Moreover, in the “Biblioteca di scenari” series, which I direct at Valle del Tempo, we have, not by chance, already published two works by Nicola Di Bianco, a computer engineer and biblical scholar, on the scenarios inaugurated by artificial intelligence, both in general and specifically in the healthcare sector. The first volume of this Author of ours immediately declares: «This essay analyzes the theological, anthropological, philosophical, sociological, political, legal, criminological implications of the digital universe originated by new devices, the internet and “pseudo-artificial intelligence”… The text intends to offer pastors, religious people, pastoral workers a tool to educate themselves on the use of new technologies».
There are truly many points of view on AI. As Giuseppe Faibano writes (in his essay on pages 39-45 of the volume we are presenting today), in the wake of a classification by Umberto Galimberti, «in accordance with the so-called theories of the mind… intelligence is a super ability that presides over the choice and organization of others» (page 40).
There is no one who does not see the ethical and bioethical implications of the book and the discussion it documents and promotes. Moreover, already in 2016, the National Committee for Bioethics (consultative body of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers) promulgated the bioethical opinion entitled Information and communication technologies and big data: bioethical profiles (with an interesting Legal Note in the Appendix).
That document of the National Bioethics Committee focused both on the enormous development opportunities that are opening up, in particular in the healthcare sector, with telemedicine, precision medicine, the development of healthcare policies, but also highlighted some critical issues in the difficulty of governing the enormous mass of data in the collection, analysis and use of data, especially when they are used and applied in a different way from the initial collection or without the awareness of the us...

  • L’algoritmo impertinente.

Ti chiudo int’o serraglio! (ti chiudo in collegio).

  • Giordano Bruno, shared inheritances. Nola, 17.2.2025 by Pasquale Giustiniani
Giordano Bruno, shared inheritances. Nola, 17.2.2025
    (by Pasquale Giustiniani) Introduction
According to inheritance law, there is joint inheritance when the deceased is succeeded by several heirs, who become co-owners of the assets and joint holders of the rights and debts that are part of the inheritance. Therefore, if there are several heirs (for example, children and spouse), each of the co-heirs becomes co-owner of a share of the assets and relationships belonging to the deceased.
Of what rights and debts has the tradition become co-owner that has investigated Filippo Bruno, in religion Fra’ Giordano? The interest of the Roman Inquisition in Fra’ Giordano Pope Clement VIII (Aldobrandini), manifests his great satisfaction to the Venetian Republic for the granted extradition to Rome, via Porto di Ancona, of the preaching friar Giordano Bruno, a man now known almost throughout Europe for his great intelligence and his doctrine. The Venetian Tribunal of the Inquisition was investigating the Dominican friar not only as an apostate from the religious Order of origin, but also as a formal heretic and as a heresiarch, since he had composed several books dedicated to European heretical princes and had personally visited and lived in several Protestant states. The Venetian Senate's resistance to the Pope was almost useless, objecting that this new practice of sending those already detained in Venice to Rome would be detrimental and a bad example for the Venetian Inquisition, to whose tribunal, as the "natural seat", the pending trials should have been "sent". The interventions of the Apostolic Nuncio finally convinced the Senate to give in, not without the positive opinion of the Prosecutor Federico Contarini, who underlined, in any case, the outstanding intelligence and doctrine of the accused.
Two powerful influences were exerted on the Pope in those years by two men whom he elevated to the dignity of cardinal: Giulio Antonio Santoro (or Santori), later Cardinal of Santa Severina, who would later lead the Congregation of the Holy Office for almost twenty years, elected censor for religious matters; Roberto Bellarmino for philosophical matters. And, consequently, more in-depth studies on these two figures would allow for a more considered judgment, especially as, as we have already seen, during the Venetian interrogations Bruno had clearly stated, elegantly distancing himself from the accusation of material and formal heresy: I have read books by Melanthone, Luther, Calvin, and other transmontane heretics, not to learn their doctrine, nor to make use of it, considering them more ignorant than me, but I have read them out of curiosity, and I have never kept these books with me, meaning those that professedly deal with matters contrary to and repugnant to the Catholic faith, that I have also kept with me other books by damned authors, such as Raymond Lullius, and others, who have dealt with philosophical matters. And he responds to the interrogation. I despise the aforementioned heretics, and their doctrines, because they do not deserve the name of theologians, but of pedants, but of Catholic Ecclesiastical Doctors. I hold them in the esteem that I owe, and in particular of St. Thomas, who I have always esteemed as I said above, and loved by me as my soul, and that it is the truth, here is that in my book entitled de Monade, numero, et figura, carte, or 89 pages, I say in praise of St. Thomas, as much as you can see, ostendens in dicto libro infrascripta verba videlicet ille omnis cuiuscumque Theologantium generis el Peripatheticorum in specie philosophantum honor, atque lux Thomas Aquinas omnem. While acknowledging, in short, that he has read books by heretics and condemned people, Fra Giordano claims in Venice that he consulted them out of curiosity, without sharing their theses, which he actually judged to be such that they do not even deserve the name of theological theses, but rather theses of pedantics, while maintaining his esteem for true Catholic authors, first and foremost Thomas Aquinas. Because in Rome, the Pope and the Roman Tribunal have not recalled, particularly in recent years, not only Bruno's prodigious and sincere memory, but also those lines from Spaccio della bestia trionfante in which the Nolan asserted his clear and forthright speaking: ((⏱️=400)) Here Giordano speaks in the vernacular, names freely, gives his name to those who nature gives her being; he does not call shameful what nature makes worthy; he does not cover up what she shows openly; he calls bread, bread; wine, wine; the boss, boss; the foot, foot; and other parts, by their own name; it says eating, eating; sleeping, sleeping; drinking, drinking; and so the other natural acts means by their own titleCertainly, the extradition and subsequent Roman trial must have been influenced by the fact that the Nolan was still considered a professed member and ordained in sacris in the Order of Preachers, whose General was, moreover, in those years very convinced of the profound decadence of the Order and of the need to restore its ordinances. Indeed, it is symptomatic that, in the trial against the Nolan (on 21 December 1599, together with Fra' Paolo Isaresi from Mirandola), Father Beccaria was entrusted by the Tribunal with the task of submitting to Giordano Bruno a list of erroneous propositions to be abjured. On 20 January 1600, almost on the eve of the condemnation, the two friars gave an account of the task received, informing that Bruno had rejected them, stating that until then he had been misunderstood by the judges. Why, then, did the Tribunal entrust the Dominican Father General Ippolito Maria Beccaria (1550-1600) and his vicar with the specific task of contacting Bruno and convincing him to recant his positions, which the Tribunal considered formally heretical, not without a, it seems ambiguous, payment of money? Had the money perhaps been paid with corrupt intent, or even to help him with the inevitable expenses for drafting briefs and writing responses in the phase of the so-called expeditio causae, which in fact coincided with the formulation of the sentence? The Roman Inquisition, as will be remembered, was founded in 1542, with the substantial intent of blocking the expansion of the Protestant Reformation in Italy; by the end of the century, heretical positions or erroneous interpretations of the Holy Scriptures had by then been assimilated by Catholics to Protestantism, which had already torn Europe and the once Christian states apart. The vision that guided the inquisitors was not, therefore, narrow. Likewise, a vision that also attributed this tribunal of consciences to the inevitable intolerant attitude of the modern Church, moreover following the medieval revival, would be narrow. The original structure of the Roman Tribunal, beyond some basic analogies with the Spanish Inquisition, had a very different structure and functioning with regard to both the center and the peripheral seats. In any case, between the pontificates of Paul IV and Pius V, the Inquisition became in all respects a supporting structure of the Church and led the final fight against the Reformation, with the essential contribution of the bishops, with some momentary second thoughts during the final years of the Council of Trent, and with a recrudescence of death sentences under Pius V, a Pope who also strengthened censorship with the creation of a commission of cardinals for the reform of the Index of Prohibited Books. In the flat prisons of the Roman Inquisition, therefore, the trial file of the Bruno affair is now being prepared, not without integrating Mocenigo's confession, as well as the first Venetian interrogations and their repetitio. As Berti had already observed, collecting evidence from the two writings published by the Nolan in Frankfurt, namely the De monade and the De triplici, minimo et mensura, the inquisitors could in any case have at their disposal a large dossier of suspect propositions: Much more copious was the catalogue of heretical propositions that the inquisitors removed from the books that bore his name and that he had recognised as his Therefore he was further convinced by the Holy Office to maintain: that the worlds are innumerable; that souls pass from one body to another, from one to another world; that the same soul can inform two bodies; that magic is good and lawful; that the Holy Spirit is one with the soul of the world, and that this was meant by Moses when he said that the Holy Spirit was diffused over the waters to fertilize them; that the world is eternal; that Moses worked miracles by means of magic, in which he went before all the Egyptians; that he himself invented his laws; that the sacred Letters are nothing but a dream; that the devil will be saved; that the Jews alone have Adam for their father; that other men draw their origin from the progenitors whom God created before Adam; that Christ is not God, that he was a great magician, and that having deceived men, he was deservedly hanged and not crucified; that the prophets and the apostles were sad men, magicians, and that many of them were also hanged. The trial will end several years later, with a peculiar final sprint during 1599, which will lead, as we will see, to a conclusive Roman sentence, in which Bruno will be condemned as a negative and unrepentant heretic, remembering that negative heretics are those who, convinced of their heresy do not want or cannot detach themselves from it and, without confessing, remain firm in their denials, confessing in words the Catholic faith and proclaiming that they reject heretical malignity
heretic whoever does not confess the guilt of which he has been convicted is clearly unrepentant The archivist reported at the end of the nineteenth...

  • Giordano Bruno, eredità condivise. Nola 17 febb.2025 P. Giustiniani

  • Kafka Alto Of the Notebook and the Metamorphoses Prisco De Vivo, Gutenberg editions
The Kafkaesque quote – placed in epigraph to the works of art by Prisco De Vivo (figurative artist and brilliant poet and designer) and to the verses of Raffale Piazza (well-known poet and journalist) - reminds us of a certain predilection of the Prague writer Franz Kafka (Prague 1883 – Kierling, Vienna, 1924) for the night and for the dark. Indeed for black, which could potentially transform into white. Not yet, at first glance, the black of the imminent Nazism and Fascism and the darkness of the concentration and extermination camps, where Jews, children, madmen, gypsies and the different are massed, to typify them and study them through a medicine and a science that are obscurely bending to the Manifesto of Race. The Kafkaesque black – which Prisco De Vivo finds and takes up again today – is, rather, that of the covers of old elementary school notebooks, with their dark color and their squared pages, which awaited pencil strokes and pastel stains. Pencils and strokes that, now, transform the white pages with dark stains. Metamorphoses of white into dark and of shades of dark toward white, transformations of matter and of glances. After all, in the wheel of metamorphoses, of every metamorphosis, “the man sits in the eminent part, a beast lies at the bottom, a half man and half beast descends from the left, and a half beast and half man ascends from the right”, as in the dreamlike glances of Fra Giordano Bruno Nolano. And the mind, faced with this book given to us by De Vivo and Piazza, cannot help but go from Homer to Rowling, passing through the North African Apuleius (2nd century AD), up to Dante, Bruno, Pasolini and, above all, as now happens in this volume, which we are rereading, to Kafka.
In fact, before the eye of De Vivo there is not the blue of the eight “notebooks of words” by Kafka, published on the basis of what Max Brod offered. In those notebooks, the Prague writer had frescoed the room that is in each of us at night. Written between 1917 and 1919, shortly before writing that long revealing document, which will be the Letter to the Father, those small notebooks – in which the writer seems willing to give vent to even the most hidden and scabrous corners of his heart – open our eyes to the meaning of darkness and night. But did Kafka really like the night, the dark, the black? Josef K., the protagonist of The Trial (written by Kafka between 1914 and 1917 and published posthumously in 1925) finds himself subjected, following an unspecified accusation, to a trial: it takes place in the attic of an old, squalid, dark and labyrinthine apartment building. Here he also meets a painter, named Titorelli who, despite being very poor, works as a portraitist for the court, so he knows perfectly well how all the mechanisms of the court and the Law work, but then he will be evicted with his paintings anyway. In The Trial, closed, dark and asphyxiating places prevail, like the court. But the figure of Titorelli is precisely the one that can most entice the eye of Kafka, but also of De Vivo, to look, even at night. From Kafka’s papers – which were saved by his friend and executor Max Brod, who took them with him first to Turkey and then to Israel, fleeing the German invasion of Prague – this very short story was published (against the will of the Author, who had entrusted them to him with the clause not to edit). It is a work of writing-meditation that, like others, could have been developed in notebooks and notes. At night, in fact, the figure of an insomniac presents the caretaker, who reads and questions himself in the darkness of the night, almost watching over the questions of those who cannot or do not manage to sleep, and perhaps he is also guarding, that is, watching over the unconscious sleep of the sleepers: «And you are awake, you are one of the caretakers, you find the next one by shaking the burning wood in the pile of twigs next to you. Why do you keep watch? One must keep watch, they say. One must be present" (Franz Kafka 1920, Italian translation by E. Pocar).
If one must be present, here is the black and the light of our artist. However, all this must not happen now before our eyes of flesh and the eyes of our mind. Because, if we look closely, the dark and the shadows of the night are never pleasant for Kafka, but they happen because of insomnia, which does not let you sleep and, often, instead of calming and reassuring, instills fear. After dark pages, also in the volume by Prisco De Vivo and Raffaele Piazza, the first spot of color; indeed - as Manuela Gandini rightly notes on page 11 - here is the new "creation" of the artist: a face without features, but only with one open eye ((⏱️=400)) empty. It is the transfigured gaze of the artist, who thus undertakes his own peculiar metamorphosis of glances from darkness to light, from indistinct shadows to somatic features, not without always introducing new darkness, new nights, new scenarios, new metamorphoses ((⏱️=500)) in the pages that follow. Is it the impotence of man in the face of a reality that is anything but legible, or are there transformations of the gaze on reality, where the darkness is orienting the human gaze beyond night and darkness? Isn't this the true meaning of every metamorphosis, that is, the power to transform the gaze, which instead risks getting lost in the figure of a donkey that has no wings, or in the little squares of a notebook with a black cover. How can we recover that eye, that very clear gaze, present in some sections of De vivo, that make us rise from the dark bowels of matter and of pictorial and photographic materials, towards the clarity of truth? «What does this immense solitude mean?», the wandering shepherd of Asia in Leopardi already asked. In the second book of Ovid's Metamorphoses we read: «In the end, Mother Earth, surrounded as she was by the sea, between those waves and the consumed springs, which where there was room / tried to hide in her dark bowels» (lines 272-274). Here is the darkness of the dark bowels of the night. And yet, even in all this darkness, the eye, from today's Kafkaesque low, can still rise upwards: the hope of dawn is never lost, as Ovid already sang: «While I speak to you, the humid night has reached the goal set on the coasts of Hesperia. We are not allowed delay ((⏱️=400)) we are awaited; the darkness dispersed, the Dawn shines» (second book, lines 142-144). Yes, we are expected at the end of the darkness and the night, but also of the images and words of the book, of every book: «The following dawn had removed the fires of the night, the sun had melted the frost in the meadows with its rays and they/ found themselves in that place. With a soft whisper then, after having complained for a long time, they decided to elude the guards, to try to escape in the silence of the night and, once outside the house, leave the city itself» ((⏱️=400))(Book four, lines 81-86). The metamorphosis of Inachus' daughter into a heifer is also an attempt to escape out of the house, out of the city, out of the mere donkey ears, out of the darkness((⏱️=400))verse above: «The following dawn had removed the fires of the night, the sun had melted the frost in the meadows with its rays and they/ found themselves in that place. With a soft whisper then, after having complained for a long time, they decided to elude/ the guards, to try to escape in the silence of the night/ and, once out of the house, leave the city itself» (book one, lines 81-86). The Kafkaesque guard now seems to point to another figure, that of the artist and poet Camillo Capolongo ((⏱️=400))(Roccarainola, 25 September 1940 – Roccarainola, 21 July 2013)((⏱️=400)) who, as the captions of the volume tell us, gives us a glimpse of a “new Kafka((⏱️=500)) who lived in the Desert of dissent”. The desert of dissent, or rather every desert, is the alternative to the original garden of creation. It is still that of the people of Israel, who leave Egypt under the guidance of JHWH, who, according to the sacred story, does not fear not having "who will command him"; indeed, he himself chooses the guides (now Moses, now Joshua, whose Latin name - Iesus - in the eyes of the Fathers of the Church, prefigures another Iesus, the true one, who places himself at the head of the people of the Gentiles); he chooses the gestures, the steps and the itineraries, even the medicines against the poisons of the asps of the arid lands, as it appears in the biblical book of Numbers and Joshua. Capolongo's desert was not that of Canaan and the prelude to the promised land. It was that of dissent. Capolongo's collaborations with intellectuals of the European avant-garde such as Jean Jacques Lebel, Steve Lacy, Julien Blaine, led him to the avant-garde of Il sociale. A metamorphosis of the social, which is not the folkloric and the popular, but is precisely that "social" in which the artist immerses himself, not to seek inspiration or to bring comfortable moments of leisure, but to build a common political conscience.
Art in all its infinite declinations (poetry, theater, painting and sculpture, design and architecture), must be open to metamorphosis, that is, to be linked to the human sciences (sociology, anthropology, ecology((⏱️=400))), to create fair and balanced projects and models of collective life.
The Preface to the volume we are talking about (a set of brief judgments and glimpses of the lyrics, the dark and the colored figures) opens, therefore, with the lightning-fast lines of Rosaria Ragni Licinio, who sketches the contours of the “thing” by Prisco De vivo and Raffaele Piazza: «an artist's book and at the same time((⏱️=400)) a poetic anthology whose protagonist is the Prague writer Franz Kafka((⏱️=400)) starting from “The Metamorphosis”, “The Trial” and “The Castle”» ((⏱️=400))(page 9)((⏱️=400)). This is reiterated by a series of short posts by Gian Ruggero Manzoni, Giuseppe Conte, Manuela Gandini. But the book opens with the...

  • Lara's instinct. Emilia Tartaglia Polcini, Graus editions, Naples-(P. Giustiniani)
Sunday 9 February 2025, 11.00 am  at the monumental complex of Santa Maria la Nova in Naples, for the Books&Museum review, the presentation of l'istinto di Lara,  by Emilia Tartaglia Polcini,  was held. Preface by Maria Cristina Donnarumma (Friend of the Strega Prize Sunday), Graus editions, Naples 2024, 155 pages. This debut novel by Emilia Tartaglia Polcini delves very well, with a pressing rhythm, into the «three main characters» alongside whom «others rotate who cannot be defined as entirely secondary» (from the Preface, page 7); and this not without the additional «protagonist of no secondary importance… nature with its noises, its colors, its scents» (Ibid., page 8).
You can see the pen of someone accustomed to short stories and theatrical plays also in this one, which I would define as a coming-of-age novel, whose short and effective chapters, not numbered, follow one another in a compelling way, to make us gradually perceive, so to speak directly, the various aspects of what the title of the book calls, precisely, Lara's instinct. It is, in many respects, the same instinct of her mother Mélanie, who found herself acting as the wife of an unlikely «peacock», her husband, who, despite her presence, was capable of swelling «next to that unlikely companion who was only slightly older than his daughter» (page 54). An instinct that soon leads Lara to be terrified of her father (compare pages 62 and 63), also because he, with his ways and his repeated and shameless betrayals with his “kitten” (page 49), was causing, as we read verbatim, everything to collapse (both relationships and feelings, both passions and hobbies that were not his); all this given the fact, immediately evident, that «his marriage was falling apart» (page 48).
The father lives alone, even though he is with his wife, her friend, and his daughter; he is a construction magnate (compare page 115), who can even have non-scheduled flights, but cannot fly higher than his own genitals; but above all, he appears to be taken by his hobbies, as long as they are always lucrative, such as the sparkling wine production of his wine products, which he is promoting even in Japan, that is, "in a country that only in modern times is beginning to open up to the Western culture of wine consumption" (page 115). The short narrative chapters occasionally feature parts printed in italics: they are almost the commentary of a chorus of the ancient Greek theater, in the sense that, periodically, the Author carves out her own spaces: in these lines of writing, she presents her observations on the facts, on the climate, on the environment, on the events, on the souls, on the emotions...; above all, she does so in those lines in which the narrated events give the sense of the few moments - ephemeral!, just as she opens and closes the chapter on pages 37 to 39 - in which some glimmer of happiness seems to make its way on the horizon. Among others, the italicized part of pages 60 to 65, tells, in counterpoint, the real "terror" that Lara has of her father, also because he does not share what he considers, textually, «that stupid activity of ballet» (page 61); this is a characteristic repeated in another passage in italics, where Lara «little by little, towards her father… a real terror had taken shape» (page 63)The world of people and environments evoked by these pages does not belong to the plebs, but to the upper middle class involved in international business and transactions, particularly in the production of the wine industry; we are talking about the Castaldi family of Lomellina, whose exponent - and father of Lara - is, in fact, Filippo Castaldi of Lomellina: a man with a strong weakness for carnal sensuality that, in the plot, leads him to introduce his lover at his wife's birthday party, or even to have her live in the house together with his daughter Lara, in the years in which his wife, following a fall from a horse - which happened after the terrible moment of his betrayal, when she discovers that her husband does not disdain public sentimentality with his lover.
By now Lara's mother, despite her very vivid imagination, lives elsewhere in a neurovegetative state. Slave, like a teenager, to the feminine charm of an escort, as when the narration in italics observes that Lara «saw her father Filippo who… accompanied a young woman to the car and like a teenager spent himself in effusions, promising to join her as soon as possible» (page 65). A «vain to the end» (page 152), as the now mature and married Lara will sentence (whose heart a young man finally steals: page 85), in front of her father's tomb, «in the Monumental Cemetery of Milan, where he had been buried after being cremated» (page 152). Even though she belongs to this world, also made up of waiters, housekeepers, business trips throughout Europe or Japan, Lara is a person apart: «she didn't like those parties or even those people... she hated the lack of genuineness of the guests» (page 13). She loves dance, first the European one (where she will be the prima ballerina in the role of Odette in the famous ballet Swan Lake: see page 77); and then the Japanese one (in the traditional dance Nihon Buyo: page 98), during which she will suffer a serious fall, which knocks her down for a while but does not tame her. Lara is more of a mother's daughter than a father's, in the sense that her mother Mélanie, who in turn was the daughter of parents both belonging to noble families, had instilled in Lara a sympathy for different worlds, not shared by the more pragmatic Filippo: «If for Mélanie music was the essence of life, for her daughter dance was life». Furthermore, mother Mélanie - she recalls a page in italics - «sweet and kind like her daughter, had immediately bonded with that little dog» (page 62), Lara's little dog, also badly destroyed by the pragmatic Filippo. Lara shows that she has understood his personal structure: in addition to being a traitor to his wife, Filippo almost has the vocation «to ruin everything as always!» (page 79), even if her daughter loves him and would hope - in vain - to see him in the front row watching her dance (compare page 82). But perhaps the not apparent merit of the book and of Lara's instinct, well rendered by the colorful cover, which appropriately evokes Paris and Tokyo, is that of describing interpersonal relationships: those that are of blood and that are often interrupted by temperaments and characters; those that arise from interpersonal frequentation and that often fray in the same marital relationship; as happens on the evening of her birthday party to Filippo's wife who, not even imagining that the décolleté given to her by her husband Filippo was identical to the one the cheater had also given to his lover Rosemary, sees the relationship that she would have liked to rebuild as a fairytale relationship crumble (see page 52). A relationship that soon dissolves, like the semifreddo prepared as the final dessert of the birthday party, which, the Author writes with shared irony, "was melting together with the last lit candles, and that image of decay was perfect for the situation" (page 59). Relationships are more in memories - in moments fished out of memory than in harsh reality. For example, in the memory of little Lara, when she spent a holiday in the mountains as a child (compare pages 74 to 75); or when the protagonist, her experience in Japan having ended with a fall and fractures, desires «now more than ever, to breathe the air of home, to nourish herself with the most beautiful memories and to fight to rebuild a shred of normality» (page 133), perhaps with woodland or plant therapy, or even with hippotherapy: «Riding fast would have alleviated that sense of oppression and anguish for the future» (page 93). But above all, as happens in the chapter that bears the same name as the book (pages 142 to 150), before the Epilogue, when «she knew she was on a motorbike with a guy she had met by chance. It wasn't her style to hang out with people she'd never seen, much less to throw herself into adventure like that, like a reckless girl" (page 149).
