Caravaggio, Incoronazione di spine ed Ecce homo
    (Intervento di Pasquale Giustiniani)
Prima stazione – Gesù condannato a morte – “Ecce Homo”.

  • The Invention of the Home. The Domestic Order of the Polis, Valeria Pezza
At the Books and Museum on April 6, 2025 at the monumental complex of Santa Maria la Nova in Naples the essay by Valeria Pezza: The invention of the house. The domestic order of the polis, Christian Marinotti editions, Milan 2025, 120 pages.
«Whoever lives in a house built inside a city is like a pilgrim who proceeds – as the nineteenth-century Russian mystic John of Kronstadt said – with a traveling staff and a wayfarer's clothing: when he reaches the end of his life, the door will open wide and he will finally be at home, "because we have no lasting city here, but we seek the one to come" (Hebrews 13, 14)» Review by Pasquale Giustiniani. The provocation that comes from the structure of the Greek city
Among the many thanks for this remarkable publication - created by Valeria Pezza with the contribution of DiARC: Department of Architecture-University of Naples Federico II -,((⏱️=400)) you can also read those that the Author wanted to dedicate «to the entire community of Pollica, a land where you can still see something of the Greek world». In fact, each of these rich and dense pages of Valeria Pezza's essay refers to the archaeological traces, or rather to their significant stones and their references to the thoughts and works of their creators, builders and inhabitants.
That of the houses of the Greek cities in the so-called colonies and in the sites of classical Greece, is a world similar to the one in front of which we can place, together, both archaeology and the history of architecture and topography; but also cultural anthropology and the history of ideas, as illustrated and demonstrated by the acute and erudite effort of deciphering, conducted for us by Valeria Pezza in these pages. Thus, the ancient stones of Akragas (Agrigento) can become the figure of an ambivalence typical of the complex and multifactorial process that is appropriately called "invention of the house". At a first, but superficial, glance, "the domestic dimension appears removed and devalued, as it is not based on the heroic gesture, on the public and visible exaltation of power, conflict and strength" (page 11). Instead, as we read in the Foreword to this volume (pages 7 to 18), the starting question should be formulated in accordance with what the title of the volume recalls (moreover enriched by numerous graphs and tables): "When was that repeatable and repeated house invented that presides over the construction of the city itself as a place not so much of religious, political, military power, but of the home of its citizens?" (page 7).
This explains why, integrating the consolidated point of view that correlated the architecture of the classical polis to the so-called political sphere, «it was urgent to question those forms, their meaning and their nature, to ask what domestic dimension, to what daily rituals they gave rise, measure and space, and in what vision of the world. Then, why so much silence? What meaning did the house have in that origin and what does the house mean for us today?» (page 9).
From here, a different and intriguing perspective takes shape, excellently pursued by Valeria Pezza, which helps to re-signify the very meaning of political action - theorized in the political writings of classical Greek philosophers - and to clarify in its various reverberations the relationship between the private (domestic), often relegated to the sphere of irrelevance, and the public (political, also in a military and warlike sense, but today also social and cultural): «Surprisingly, together with the question about the times and ways of the invention of the home for all, the disturbing one emerged about this incomprehensible condemnation to the insignificance» of the private, if understood only as "relegated to what is meaningless". This is why we must ask ourselves, continues the Author: «has it really always been like this? And now does it make sense for us to deprive of value the daily life that marks the life of each one, or is it precisely inside the home that a politics lives and can mature that is not reduced to the exercise and self-representation of power?» (page 10).
And furthermore: «So why this silence about the home? Why has that domestic world that originally defined the οἰκεῖος (oikèios) as an intimate, personal, familiar place, each person’s own space, ended up being qualified in common language only in the negative, as deprived of value and meaning, removed from awareness and thought?» (page 13). If, to the structural error, corresponds a previous error of thought, it could be examined, as the Author now helps us to do, through a further question: «If the personal is the first level of politics, why is it kept silent?» (page 14). Not a “den” or “place to take refuge: new meanings of the invention of the house((⏱️=500))
More than a den to take refuge in; more than an area or place without political-social relevance, the house, with its various classical reverberations of the words that designate it, «has a decisive role in the elaboration of the polis and the very idea of politics» (page 15).((⏱️=400)) And this concerns not only yesterday, but also today and even the future, which above all has a proleptic charge that helps decipher the rubble of today: «The rubble of the bombed houses in Ukraine and Palestine are the image that best judges the war, showing its completely devastating and irrational character. The demolished walls, the torn houses, the intimate life desecrated and exposed to everyone's gaze perhaps recall, in the sign of the devastation, that hidden desire that questions the lived interiors of other people's houses, as in the opening scenes of Wings of Desire by Wim Wenders, or in Hopper's paintings» (page 16).
These profiles, already well outlined in the Foreword, are then articulated and explained in the concrete unfolding of the four juicy chapters of this volume. In the first chapter (pages 19 to 42), which refers mainly to the analysis of the archaeological urban structures of the Greek foundation of Akragas (580 BC), it is observed that it remains difficult to immediately identify a rule for the arrangement of the blind walls and the typification of the house, until aerial photography offers another observation point to the general vision of contemplation: things truly unfold before the eyes, the forehead and the mind, as in a theater; whereby the city appears as a «spectacle and at the same time a religious ceremony in which things happen, processes develop» (page 22). In this way, it is explained why scholars have been able to conclude that Greek orthogonal urban planning was born outside of Greece. In fact, it is in the so-called colonies, before Greece, that the stones of the inhabited areas appear to have belonged to different city constructions; therefore, they can be made to “speak” – this is exactly what happens in these pages –: «a stable relationship between house and city is recorded, a sign that in these examples the polis was not identified, as in Greece, only with monuments and public places, but also included and built the house, the house for everyone; it gave place, form and measure even to that world dismissed as private. The unitary logic of the architectural and spatial system holds together the single part and the whole, the grandiose valley of the temples and the silent repeatable house, the public and the private» (page 33). Thus, the same square shape of the house takes on new reverberations, «then connected to the urban insula and the street layout», which will appear «not only in Sicily, but in various places in southern Italy, Epirus, present-day Turkey, the Chalkidiki peninsula, in foundations of the seventh, sixth, fifth and fourth centuries BC and even in Pompeii» (page 36). Sacred and symbolic profiles in the construction of the house. One of the first reverberations of this different, possible, look at the house, as shown in chapter 2. (pages 43 to 64), is the one that allows us to grasp the sacred profiles of the city's layout and the corresponding divinities: «To Hestia, first, each individual and daily turned their care and devotion; the rites of the hearth required that the sacred fire be kept always lit, pure and chaste, protected from events such as childbirth or death, from bloodshed and sexual intercourse. The Hearth was the main deity of the house, but other gods also inhabited different corners of the house and Zeus Herkeios, guardian of the border lines, dominated the entire building» (page 50). Indeed, not only outside the dedicated temple areas, but also in the kitchen, where people commonly live, there are gods: «There are gods here too, Heraclitus will say to some guests, standing on the threshold, who hesitated to enter his house seeing him warming himself by the kitchen fire. Impiety, the profanation of what is considered sacred, is one of the most serious crimes in ancient Greek culture, the one Socrates was accused of» (page 52). After all, «The square evokes stability, having equal angles and sides, and is a shape built on the correspondence to the four elements» (page 55). Here, on the episode of the obscure Heraclitus, is the testimony handed down to us by Aristotle: «And as Heraclitus, as it is said, spoke to those strangers who wanted to visit him, but who, once they entered, stopped in surprise to see him warming himself at the kitchen stove (he invited them to come in without hesitation: here too - he said - there are gods), so one must approach the investigation of each of the animals without disgust, since in all of them there is something natural and beautiful». As Martin Heidegger commented in Letter on Humanism (1946) -, the visitors thought they would find the obscure thinker «sunk in deep meditation»; instead, while he warms himself at the fire because he is cold, he pronounces the famous three words about the presence of the gods in the kitchen: words that put the thinker's...

  • reform and reforms, the Waldensian reform and Ferrante Sanseverino
Salerno Medical School Foundation and the study center of the literary, arts and rational thought cenacle "Ferrante Sanseverino", present: reform and reforms, the Waldensian reform and Ferrante Sanseverino. Salerno, 5 April 2025. Report by Pasquale Giustiniani
..Reform/reforms. The "myth of Geneva", the new capital of Christianity antithetical to Rome and a laboratory of political, economic and social innovations, shone from the 1940s onwards, experiencing cracks, but not crises. Calvin's works spread throughout the peninsula, in the original or in translation, thanks to the propaganda action of clandestine believers and exiles. The pro-Protestant groups, especially with the intensification of heretical repression in the mid-sixteenth century, found in Geneva a destination for their diaspora and a doctrinal and ecclesiological system to draw inspiration from in their homeland: a solid system capable of providing strong normative authority, doctrinal and material support for community life, a Eucharistic conception that was completely alternative to the Catholic one, a sign of the group's identity and spiritual communion. ((⏱️=1000))The Waldensian Reform. Bernardino Ochino, in his widely propagated Sermons, took up the main themes of Calvin's Institutions, albeit mixed with so-called Waldensian elements. Calvin's masterpiece was also spread by a central figure in Waldensianism, Marcantonio Flaminio, who took passages and ideas from it for the elaboration of that original synthesis of ideas, both Waldensian and Reformed, that is The Benefit of Christ, of which he was co-author together with Benedetto da Mantova. That "sweet little book", as Vergerio defined it, printed without constraints in Venice in 1543, was perhaps the heterodox text that became the most read and most famous in Italy: according to Vergerio, in Venice alone 40,000 copies had been sold in six years, and this was due to the message of profound spirituality and religious renewal that it appeared to be the bearer of. An example is the confession of an illustrious Waldensian prelate, the apostolic protonotary Pietro Carnesecchi (executed in 1567), who declared to the judges: «When Flaminio [Marcantonio] was staying with me in Florence, he had shown me a little of Calvin's Institutio, which had filled my mind with similar opinions, in which I continued and grew until the year 1545, often reading those books, and conversing with those people who were able to confirm them in my soul». In the early 1540s, crucial events marked the history of the Italian peninsula: the failure of the Ratisbon talks, the institution of the Holy Office, the convocation of the Council of Trent, the disappearance of charismatic figures such as Juan de Valdés, Gasparo Contarini and Gian Matteo Giberti. The Protestant reform movement then decided to undertake an energetic propaganda campaign for the new theology, through the diffusion of religious literature in the vernacular. Faith in Christ became the fulcrum of the Christian's life and the only instrument of justification: Ochino openly affirmed this in his sermons, urging people to believe that "we will have paradise through the merits of Christ". He did not address the issue of works, he only made them understand their inessentiality for the purposes of salvation, "gently" leading his listeners to share what would become a fundamental principle of the Protestant Reformation. Ochino had learned this doctrine and these methods of propaganda, precisely. in the Neapolitan Circle of Juan de Valdés: a Spanish reformer who, with his syncretistic conception of Alumbradism, Erasmism and Protestantism, shaped the consciences of many Italians in the decade between 1530 and 1541, with the aim of carrying out a renewal of Christians and the church, albeit without traumatic ruptures with Rome. The Reformation in Southern Italy. Even in Southern Italy, the anxiety of Reformation was distinguished by the high degree of social promiscuity - bringing together nobles, ecclesiastics, commoners, bourgeois, who were already among the ranks of the Catholics -, by the important role of the religious and by the different doctrinal outcomes, with figures of great importance in the Italian and European religious and cultural world, such as Juan de Valdés, Camillo Renato, Giorgio Siculo, Agostino Doni. As regards the Kingdom of Naples in the modern era, and not only, the results of the conclave of 1549, with the failure to elect Pole, due to the trials opened against him by Carafa, and the definition of the first decrees of the Ecumenical Council of Trent, which will be called and will never officially conclude (the conclusion will be made official by Vatican I at the end of the nineteenth century) certainly marked the beginning of the decline of the experience of the "spirituals", or of the Waldensians stricto sensu. On the one hand, that experience took on the forms that we can define as typically Calvinist (as they developed above all in Geneva and Switzerland).
on the other hand a certain closure in themselves, a no longer productive retreat, of the Waldensians, as in the case of Colonna, Brancaccio or Galeota, who nevertheless had to suffer inquisitorial trials until late in life, testify without any doubt to the fragmentation of the group and its diversified outcomes. Nevertheless, throughout the 1550s, the alternating events of the "war of Pope Paul", the spasmodic attention towards a papal election, which would rebalance the situation, the expectation of providential events and a certain bond that still united some characters: all this suggests that the meaning of the dispute, political and theological of the Waldensian type, was not perceived as completely extinct. Waldensianism was the distinctive element, although not the only one, of the southern heterodox movement and represented one of the main breeding grounds of the Reformation, in its various directions. The circle that gathered around Juan de Valdés in Naples in the 1630s played a fundamental role in the history of the Reformation in the Kingdom for three reasons: a heretical message was spread from it, aimed at introducing the reformed doctrines, which spread widely and, above all, conquered the feudal aristocracy and key figures in the city institutions. Spiritualism, gradualism and Nicodemism were the cornerstones of the Waldensian teaching, and the reason for its great appeal. It envisaged a gradual process of profound spiritual renewal through the inspiration of Christ and the direct experience of justifying faith, which led to a completely interior religion, indifferent to religious practices and doctrinal differences. It was a religion that did not imply open breaks with the Catholic Church and justified the so-called Nicodemism. Its essentially spiritualistic content, despite the acceptance of the cardinal doctrine of Lutheranism, sola fide, its insistence on experience rather than religious knowledge and on the differentiated path in faith by individuals, made Waldensianism a movement susceptible to various interpretations, adaptable to different needs, and of great success. From Naples the movement thus spread throughout the peninsula, in Sicily and in Europe, also arriving at different positions, from Calvinism to Anabaptism to anti-Trinitarianism. Even in the South the transition from Valdés to Geneva was not rare. Due to its orientations, the Waldensian message was destined to make inroads into the elite (and in particular among noblewomen). The Neapolitan circle of the Spanish exile saw the presence of great aristocrats such as the Prince of Salerno, Ferrante di Sanseverino, the Marquis of Oria Giovanni Bernardino Bonifacio, the Marquis of Vico Galeazzo Caracciolo, the Roman noblemen Ascanio Colonna and Camillo Orsini, refined noblewomen such as Giulia Gonzaga, Isabella Bresegna, Caterina Cibo, Vittoria Colonna, prelates of the calibre of Cardinal Reginald Pole, the Apostolic Protonotary Pietro Carnesecchi, the Archbishop of Toledo Bartolomé Carranza, the Archbishop of Otranto Pierantonio di Capua, renowned ecclesiastics such as Bernardino Ochino, Pier Martire Vermigli, Benedetto Fontanini da Mantova, and even intellectuals such as Marcantonio Flaminio. Alongside these personalities, there were descendants of the most prestigious southern feudal families, mostly belonging to the imperial aristocracy, such as the Colonna, the Gonzaga, the d'Avalos, the Aragona and the di Capua, who were in turn linked to the powerful southern prince-bishops and important religious orders, such as the Benedictines and the Capuchins. Waldensians such as Mario Galeotta, Ferrante Brancaccio, the archbishop Pierantonio of Capua, Giovan Tommaso Minadois, count of Monitoro and royal councilor, Giovan Francesco Alois infiltrated Neapolitan political-social associations such as the powerful Compagnia dei Bianchi della Giustizia of Naples or the Ospedale degli Incurabili, within which they tried to implement a hegemonic plan. From printed sources, long known to scholars, and from the documentation that emerged from the Decreta and Correspondence funds of the Archives of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Diocesan Historical Archives of Naples, it is clear that the first, rather timid, anti-heretical interventions in southern Italy must be traced back to the end of the 1540s, when, most likely following the denunciations of the schoolmaster Giusto Seriato, investigations against Galeota and the so-called Neapolitan Waldensian group began. A first trial against the archbishop of Otranto, Pietrantonio di Capua, must have dated back to 1548.,,

  • Riforma e riforme.

  • I'll be there waiting for you, Maria Tedeschi
Books and Museum-Santa Maria la Nova in Naples (April 2025) Maria Tedeschi, I'll be there waiting for you, Il seme bianco editrice, Rome 2025, 176 pages. Review by Pasquale Giustiniani
A gripping story, with the characteristics of "noir" but also of "love stories". The Author - Maria Tedeschi - first takes us through, almost all in one breath, the 176 pages of a gripping story, to finally solve the enigma given in the title: «But if you decide to change your mind one day, you will always know where to find me, I will be there waiting for you» (page 176). These are the words, thrown to the other two members of the small WhatsApp group, by Carlo Brighi, who, after having done a thousand jobs, starting from that of a hairdresser tried in his hometown in the province of Naples (see page 75), has now fallen in love with Chantall Cristaldi, whose life «was a mix of art, expressiveness and emotion, but also of loneliness, a burden» (page 36). In turn, Diavolo (this is the real name of a survivor of a difficult birth: see page 121), who in the plot calls himself, and is, “little Devil”, is a “hair psychic”; he accidentally sent an email to Chantall (with a double L at the end, while the real recipient had only one l at the end); in his house he also hosted (see page 121) another of the characters in the plot, Michela, who is described in her tragic existence; during it, unfortunately, she allowed herself to be entangled in something halfway between a religious sect and a drug and sex addiction affair, of which the reader himself will discover the gripping outcome. Diavolo - or perhaps “Mistero” - also tried to get the anti-cult police to intervene in an intricate and even criminal affair, but without leaving any investigable traces (see page 129). Obviously, the rest of the story is left to the reader, who will want to join in the details of these pages. Goat, or the phenomenon of sects In a «pseudo disco in the suburbs, Alzheimer» (page 91), one can meet, or rather let oneself be met, by Goat, «a satyr with a human body, with a morbid sensuality that also manifested itself in violent and abnormal ways» (page 138); he is able to induce a love that would promise the absence of death, a-mors precisely, but that, instead, will do nothing but «cause suffering, perhaps even death» (page 139) for all those who will participate, allowing themselves to be entangled in a tremendous vortex. Here, precisely, is one of the profiles that emerge from Tedeschi's text. It deals with the phenomenon of sects and satanic religious forms or groups dedicated to unbridled sex and drugs, which in the novel are presented as contiguous. From the moment Chantall recalls a Freudian quote – a reminiscence of her philosophy studies – and then finds a bag left by mistake by Michela at home, a satanic invocation appears: “Adiutorium nostrum in nomine Domini Inferi” (page 5); Tedeschi puts the right accents to help the reader who doesn’t know Latin! This is not a marginal or merely literary aspect, the Cards of Don Battista Cadei - Spiritual Advisor of the GRIS = Group of Socio-religious Research and Information - in fact inventory dozens and dozens of religious and spiritual realities present in Italy: starting from the best known, such as the Church of the Kingdom of God (Foundation of Frédéric Louis Alexander Freytag [1870-1947], who joined the Watch Tower Society - future Jehovah's Witnesses - in 1898, and became responsible for Switzerland; however, after Russell's death [1916] his relations with the Society deteriorated, reaching a break between 1919 and 1920; to arrive at the less known, such as the Ananda Marga Movement: New Religion derived from Hinduism, founded in 1955 in India by Prabhat Raujan Sarkar, known as Shrii Shrii ANANDAMURTI [personification of bliss], or simply Baba (father), born in 1921 and died in 1990). Or also the New World Association and S.A.C.S.A.U (=School of Self-Awareness for the Harmonious Development of Man), then El Are; or also the S.I.M.O. (=Italian School of Holistic Medicine), as well as the Health and Nature Association, with the Founder «S.D.P. Patrizio PAOLETTI [born in Naples in 1960]» who, «from 1976 to 1983 studied and explored the phenomenon of global charismatic renewal, participating in various Italian-speaking groups. From 1978 to 1982 he attended specialization courses in integrated Naturopathy, as part of the project for the dissemination of scientific studies on the principles of healthy eating, and became a promoting member of the P.R.A.F.O.U. [Research Project on Functional Anomalies of the Organism]». Furthermore, it will be recalled that, during the nineteenth LEGISLATURE, the PROPOSAL FOR A LAW for the Establishment of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the phenomenon of sects was introduced in the CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES with Number 471 (Presented on 26 October 2022). The explanatory report recalled that the most recent data, provided by bodies and associations active on the subject, show a worrying vertiginous increase in sects and their followers in Italy: there are approximately 500 "spiritual communities" that count, among their followers, a number ranging from one to two million Italians (figure dating back to 2022); but the spread of the phenomenon is now more rapid, also following the demolition of borders and the increased use of the web and new technologies. This leads to easier recruitment of the most sensitive subjects, namely young people and minors, and at the same time produces an atomization of groups that further complicates their recognition and the related surveillance activity. Gérald Bronner, an authoritative specialist in cognitive sociology, professor at the University of Paris Diderot and former co-director of the Center for Sociological Studies at the Sorbonne, in his appreciated 2013 essay «La Démocratie des crédules» (Paris, Presses Universitaires de France, 2013; Italian translation by Silvia Morante, Aricciam Aracne, 2016), underlined the risks of the emergence «of new types of sectarian beliefs», even more difficult to trace since they are no longer structured around a localized group or a guru. These new, elusive movements, difficult to identify but capable of producing individuals willing to take action, would constitute, according to the authoritative French scholar, a new challenge for democracy itself. It is clear that the lack of data and specific and detailed information on this topic constitutes a strong limitation both for the implementation of dedicated policies and for the mere knowledge of the phenomenon, also for the benefit of the generality of citizens. The consequences of the action of these sects are disastrous, as these organizations tend, with their activity, to marginalize people who often find themselves in particularly fragile situations, from a psychological, social and economic point of view. As emerges from journalistic investigations, reports by associations and various judicial investigations, these organizations, taking advantage of the fragility of people, adopt psychological manipulation techniques to perpetrate intolerable abuses. In particular, the sects tend to distance the followers from their families and their social circle, to the point of forcing them to avoid any form of communication as it is considered harmful to the spiritual purposes of the sect, so much so that in many cases the followers, after years of permanence within the sects, are almost unknown to the institutions. In addition, scams and economic abuses are regularly committed, which often materialize in the devolution of all economic or financial assets and often also of other types of material assets in favor of the sect and its leaders. Not infrequently, these forms of economic abuse are accompanied by real forms of sexual abuse, which also involve minors. In my series "Biblioteca di senari", I published the essay by Nicola Di Bianco, Relaunching the "new evangelization" (la Valle del tempo, Naples, 2024). The re-emergence of the need for a new evangelization poses the central question of Di Bianco's book: what faith should we propose to the globalized, technologized, singularized person, to overcome the impasse of the transition in progress? Di Bianco declares himself convinced that we need to start again from the centrality of Jesus Christ (moreover, in harmony with other authors of the series "Biblioteca di Scenari"). But all this requires dealing, in a calm and scientifically founded way, with what Di Bianco defines as the current "challenge" of the neo-Manichaean, neo-Cathar, neo-Pelagian, apocalyptic and neo-millennial sects: inspired by alleged private revelations and directed by self-styled seers, these instances today pervade the same Christian people who in the meantime, in the West, are registering a sociological decline in traditional practice. Thus, the Author examines seven biblical-theological fundamentalisms, particularly widespread among the laity, but not only: baptism for the dead (1 Corinthians 15, 29); the veil of women (1 Corinthians 11, 1-34); the Tobitan marriage (Tobit 8, 4b-9); the purification of the puerpera; the flood, the punishment of the pre-flood patriarchs and the Noachide alliance (Genesis 6-9); the admission to the Eucharist of children before the age of discretion; the reception of the Eucharist only in the mouth and/or kneeling and the refusal to receive it in the hands. Of these we note the stigma tendentially “heretical”, the risks of sectarian drift, the liturgical-sacramental abuses, not without the drifts of a juridical, canonical and administrative-managerial type, often in disagreement with the episcopal authority in the particular Churches.
Maria Tedeschi’s novel evokes this relevant question in a literary way in the unhealthy relationship between Michela and Goat, the being with the tattoos hidden behind the ear: «Who is ‘Goat’? Free yourself, Michela, of this burden!» (page 87). Sometim...

  • relaunching the new Evangelization, Nicola Di Bianco at La Nova meets
La nova meets. The events of the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria la Nova in Naples. Sala Margherita Lama Caputo, Sunday 30 March 2025. A mathematician, a historian and two philosophers at Santa Maria la Nova to discuss a new book by Nicola Di Bianco on the “new evangelization”. Di Nola, Arciprete and Giustiniani, have been holding a Seminar on “Language and knowledge” for several years, which has already had several sessions in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Salerno and in the Theological Faculty of San Tommaso di Capodimonte-Naples. The aim is to arrive, if possible, at a new language that can express the divine, the religious, the spiritual in unitary terms. Now the “provocation” of the “New Evangelization” – which the Catholic Church has been aiming for since the beginning of the third millennium – is the lever of this new round, under the direction of Prof. Giuseppe Reale, Director of the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria la Nova in Naples.

Introduced by Pasquale Giustiniani. A few decades ago, together with Filippo Toriello, we published the volume: New Evangelization: What, How. Designed to help catechists and pastoral workers, it collected, and translated pastorally, an insistent expression of the papal Magisterium, which was already then configuring a real re-definition of the first Christian duty to announce the so-called Kèrygma, which was, at the time, commonly described as new in ardor and new in method. Nicola Di Bianco, in the described horizon, focuses well on the fact that such novitas, particularly in the sense of a full-scale confrontation with scientific and technological modernity, is evident in the Magisterium of Pope Francis. He, by the Author, is in fact, rightly considered the first pope to have assumed in a complete form the dialogue with modernity or postmodernity. All this is also leading to a new way of configuring the Church - a polyhedron, rather than a hierarchical pyramid, a field hospital rather than a self-sufficient militancy -; but also a new way of self-perceiving the Petrine primacy. In short, the now traditional expression of "new evangelization" implies a true reform of the Church: a fact, this, that already appeared clear to the fathers of the Council of Trent, grappling with the barrier to oppose a reform that then appeared as a revolution. It is made even more urgent today by the situation of the acceleration of events (as Pope Francis himself says, with an Argentine inflection), given the fact, as Di Bianco punctually notes, that our time is increasingly characterized by rapid changes and transformations. And this not only in international structures, but also in ethical customs, sometimes plagued by unexpected phenomena, such as the spread of abuses of all kinds in the Church (not only sexual, but also social, of power ...), such as the real drifts of traditional anthropological conceptions, of social systems, of international structures, of customs ...  The re-emergence of the need for a new evangelization thus poses the central question of the book: what faith to propose to the globalized, technologized, singularized person, to overcome the impasse of the transition in progress? The Author declares himself pertinently convinced that it is necessary to start again from the centrality of Jesus Christ (moreover, in harmony with other Authors of the series "Biblioteca di Scenari"). But all this requires dealing, in a calm and scientifically founded way, with what Di Bianco defines as the current "challenge" of the neo-Manichaean, neo-Cathar, neo-Pelagian, apocalyptic and neo-millennial sects: inspired by alleged private revelations and directed by self-styled seers, these instances today run through the same Christian people who in the meantime, in the West, are registering a sociological decline in traditional practice.

  • The Divine Language, Art and Faith According to Giustiniani. Sounds, Lights and Words. Salerno (IT)
The Divine Language: Art and Faith According to Giustiniani. Salerno, Italy. Sounds, Lights and Words Martyrs and Maryrion. Like the applause of a single hand, the inextricably intertwined mysteries of destiny and divine providence sounded in melodious contrasts in the sayings and deeds of the Desert Fathers. What is a blessing for Sisoe, will be a prohibition and a danger for Hilarion; if the scribe is not fast enough to engrave Barsanuphius' words exactly, it means that, just as he engraves them, God wants them engraved and, thus engraved, they will operate; and if the pestilential oil were not mysteriously destined for the sick old man, the distracted disciple would put honey in his polenta. Sounds, lights and words of the desert fathers are martyrs, or testimonies. From the sayings of the desert fathers: «N. 592/49 (P.E., II, 18, 10): “Abbot Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria, said: «It is often said among you: “Where is the persecution to become martyrs?”. Be a martyr in conscience, die to sin, mortify the earthly organs and you will be a martyr of intention. The martyrs fought against kings and magistrates, you too have an adversary, the devil, king of sin, and as magistrates the demons. They had before them the table of victims and the altar and, abomination of idolatry, an execrable idol»”. Martyrion: the holy place marked by the death of a martyr was said. At the time of bloody persecutions, chapels and altars were erected over the Christian martyria. Today, a true Martyrion of sounds-lights-colors is the large canvas by the master Bruno Giustiniani, where lights, shadows and colors narrate, merging, yesterday and today, in the blood shed by the young men of Chios. On April 14, 1566, with an imposing fleet of eighty galleys, Kapudanpascià Pialì  (or “Paoli”, as in other sources) arrives at the port of Chios with a subtle betrayal asking to land as friends, but, as soon as they landed, they called the head of the Maona, the mayor Vincenzo Giustiniani, the bishop Timoteo Giustiniani and the 12 governors and had them imprisoned. This did not prevent the island from being violently sacked: the Churches were all destroyed or converted into Mosques. Vincenzo Giustiniani with the other 12 governors and the other most prominent Giustiniani were taken to Constantinople. At the State Archives of Genoa a document, addressed to Cardinal Giovanni Battista Cicala (or Cigala), reports that from the island of Chios, after the Ottoman conquest of 1566, 200 ("beautiful") young men were kidnapped and taken to Constantinople. Among these two hundred, also the "Giustinian martyrs": twenty-one young men between 12 and 16 years old separated from their parents, forced to renounce the Catholic faith and enlist in the Janissary corps. 18 of them were killed after atrocious torture, on September 6, 1566. Pope Pius V must have appreciated them, he who wanted to be only the spiritual leader of Christianity and therefore even the thought of waging war against anyone was foreign to him. And yet, it was precisely to him that the task fell to prepare the largest naval battle ever fought with rowing ships and, after long negotiations, it was possible to unite the Holy See, Spain and the Venetian Republic in a league. Under the command of Don John of Austria, Philip II's half-brother, the Christian fleet, after a heroic fight, managed to defeat the Turks at Lepanto and win a resounding victory on October 7, 1571. Unfortunately, shortly after the death of Pius V, due to the selfishness of the allies, it was disbanded. Since the victory of Lepanto had been achieved on October 7, which fell that year on the first Sunday of the month, the day on which processions were held in honor of the Queen of the Rosary, the Pope attributed it to the intercession of the Madonna. Therefore, on March 17, 1572, it was decided that the feast of Our Lady of Victory should be celebrated on October 7 (a feast that by order of Gregory the Thirteenth [April 1, 1573] was transferred to the first Sunday of October and called the feast of the Queen of the Rosary). The red color of the blood of the young Giustiniani((⏱️=400)) In 1347, the Republic of Genoa had entrusted a company of merchants, a so-called maona, with the administration and commercial exploitation of the island of Chios (Chio or Scio) in the Aegean Sea, which had been reconquered the year before. The members of the maona in 1362 established the Albergo dei Giustiniani. The members added the Giustiniani surname to their own: Giustiniani Recanelli, Giustiniani di Negro, Giustiniani Banca, Giustiniani Longhi, Giustiniani Ughetti, etc. Marriages took place between Giustiniani families: the members thus strengthened the internal economic and political cohesion. In 1363 the Byzantine emperor granted the Giustiniani family the political lordship of the island. The family made considerable profits from the extraction of mastic and the trade of alum. In the Mus eo Byzantine of Chios a collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art, including icons, frescoes and manuscripts, recalls these and other events, as well as more than 10,000 books and manuscripts, as well as seminars and conferences on Byzantine art, history and culture… in short a literary Cenacle, like here in Salerno. On the basis of published and unpublished sources, it was possible to reconstruct some episodes of the life of Francesco Giustiniani de Garibaldo, a Maonese of Chios, around the middle of the fifteenth century. In the summer of 1457 his presence is attested in Chios, where he had probably arrived a few months earlier, on board the ship of Oberto Squarciafico – in which the cargo of goods from his ship had been transferred, rendered unnavigabilis due to a serious storm of sea and wind that had surprised him in the waters of Cephalonia – and where he died on the following 30 September. At the request of two of his relatives, his will was published in Genoese on the island, according to the procedure established by the legislation in force.
The history of the Giustiniani, lords of Chios, or rather that of their hotel, or rather the consortium of families that held the monopoly of the island's Maona for centuries, is full of interest starting from the level of family ties. Particularly notable is the case of the Giustiniani di Pantaleo, who arrived in Modone following the Venetian armies after the Peace of Carlowitz (1699), and even more so that of the Giustiniani di Alessandro, which included not only financiers and merchants. Gio. Costantino, for example, moved to Cattaro, where in 1742 he married Vincenza, daughter of Count Michele Racovich. He then held numerous public offices in Venetian Dalmatia, such as the chancellorship of Curzola, lived for a long time in Venice and in 1769 obtained membership in the Genoese nobility. His son Alessandro Ippolito became a standard-bearer of the Venetian army and finally settled in Genoa (1770). Family events that overall give us a mix of cultures and identities that is typical of the history of the Mediterranean and its elites.
