Premiered on 9 Mar 2025 Ella Rule, chair of the CPGB-ML gives a presentation to celebrate International Working Women’s day 2025.

Ella Rule gives the real and uncensored history of Sylvia Pankhurst, her family and background, hers fathers role in the formation of the Independent Labour Party, her More and sisters fight for the rights of women to have the Vote.

And most importantly Sylvia’s struggle against all injustice, for property rights for married women, against racism, against colonialism, for freedom for India and later Abyssinia - Ethiopia, and along the way her realisation that all workers and oppressed must struggle for their own freedom, and that path lay along the direction of socialism.

Organising among the working women and the working people of East London, she founded the Women’s Dreadnaught, with a circulation of 20,000, and after WW1, in the time of the great socialist stirring of the British Masses, the Red Rising, she changed her organisation’s name to the Worker’s dreadnaught.

Journeying to Moscow to meet Lenin at the Second Congress of the communist international, she was persuaded to lead her organisation to join in forming the young communist party - the CPGB - with William Gallagher and others, and to affiliate to Labour: “in order to support it as a rope supports a hanged man”.

However falling in love with an Italian anarcho-socialist, she criticised the Soviet Union’s centralised economic planning, and in stead joined to Italy to take part in the bienno-rosso: the Red two years, in Turin, and other cities where workers had taken effective power of their cities and workplaces - until drowned in blood by the rise of Mussolini.

Sylvia withdrew from the movement, concentrating on campaigning for womens maternity and children’s rights, before journeying to Ethiopia where she made important contributions to the development of Ethiopia and its civil institutions, after Ethiopia had managed to rid itself of Italian Colonialism.

Nigel Farage is simply one more player in a game of ‘divide and rule’ that the British ruling class has been directing for 200 years. With the Labour and Tory parties both drained of credibility, the ruling class has been training up a new reserve team, which is now ready to be brought into play. Farage’s job is to pose as an ‘outsider’ the establishment doesn’t want us to listen to – all while his party and its anti-migrant rhetoric are given massive promotion in establishment media. The aim is both to keep workers putting their faith in the increasingly distrusted parliamentary system, and to persuade them to direct their anger and frustration at other workers rather than at the capitalist system and those who rule it.

I spoke with Garland Nixon today about the state of democracy in the west. Why is it so hard for ordinary people to influence outcomes in our societies? Were the things we learned in school about Britain being the home of modern democracy and the House of Commons being the 'Mother of all parliaments' ever really true?

We talked about how decaying capitalist-imperialism needs to keep workers as distracted as possible from their declining conditions by an ever-more hysterical and partisan 'news cycle', which does not actually represent the really important things that are going on in the world and only aims to keep workers 'entertained', demoralised and divided into tribal 'culture wars' groupings.

And we discussed the nature of the state under conditions of capitalist rule, and how that differs under socialism. What is the content of the term 'democratic socialism' and whose interests do the self-identifying 'democratic socialists' really serve? What politics do the Greens really represent? Can politicians like Zohran Mamdani in the States and Zach Polanski in Britain really be as 'anti-establishment' and 'disruptive' as the spin doctors want us to believe?

What is at stake is not merely the future of a few hundred workers, but the question of who should pay for the capitalist crisis. Strikers were blocked some months ago from taking the kind of effective picketing action that would have brought about a quick resolution to the dispute. Court injunctions threatened sequestration of funds and the union caved. The anti-trade-union laws will need to be defied en masse by our movement if they are to be removed from the statute books. While they remain, they will continue to undermine the efforts of workers in struggle.
