Both Jim and Lauren feel really strongly that graduate students and postdocs should recognize and lean into their superpowers since these make them really valuable and unique.

In additional to having superpowers from diversity of technical training, other superpowers include:

• Expedited Learning curve/information processing

• Open-minded skepticism

• Ability to test hypothesis to get to go/no go decisions

In this episode, Jim Gould and Lauren Celano build upon episode 8 which focused on the importance of involvement in professional associations to talk about how to highlight these types of activities and other leadership and soft skills in your resume. These tips also apply generally to highlight aspects of your background as you engage with others. We both feel strongly that it is very important, especially for scientists, to highlight technical skills as well as various soft skills to show well rounded scientific citizenship.

In this episode, Jim and Lauren talk about the importance of engaging with professional networks and professional associations. Jim and I both attended the Annual National Postdoctoral Association Conference in Seattle Washington on March 15th and 16th 2024 and wanted to highlight why it's important to engage with organizations such as this one. In this episode, Jim Gould talks about his recent trip to University of Louisville where he presented to postdocs and graduate students on the heroes journey to help navigate conflict and Lauren Celano talks about a few recent presentations to graduate students, postdocs and industry professionals on how to develop and tailor resumes and CV's and also how to evaluate, build and highlight transferrable skills. These skills are so important to focus on and there are so many opportunities in academia to build these. We provide advice on these topics throughout the podcast and also finish the podcast talking about the importance of setting goals.
