Today we continue our journey through the book of Revelation with the message to the church at Philadelphia. Though not a powerful church, this congregation held fast to the Word of Christ and did not deny Him even in the face of persecution. While the omnipresent and omnipotent power of Jesus is a terror to those who reject Him, it is a comfort to those who cry out to Him in faith. To them He opens the door of eternal life which will never be shut. To them He promises rewards and comfort in affliction. To them He promises protection from the much worse suffering that will befall the rebellious. Christ is risen- On this glorious Resurrection Sunday we celebrate the rising of our God and King Jesus Christ, the passover lamb slain for us to reconcile us to God when we had rebelled in sin against Him. Join us as we ponder not only the details surrounding this true historical event, but also the spiritual and eternal implications it has for the soul of every human being. Christ's rising proves He was exactly who He said He was- God in human flesh, come to pay the penalty justice requires for our wickedness and clothe us in His own righteousness. This week's installment in our series through the book of Revelation brings us to Jesus message to the church at Sardis, a church that had every appearance of being alive and well, but was in fact dead. This letter is both a reminder that a busy church is not always a thriving one, and that an apostate church almost certainly will have a remnant of true believers within it. Today's study of the book of Revelation brings us to Jesus message to the church at Thyatira, a strategic outpost city near Pergamum. Jesus has both high praise and scathing rebuke for this church, whose members had strong love and faith, yet were veering off into serious sin. The message to this church is not only a warning for us to watch ourselves lest we too be tempted, it also reminds us that no matter how wayward a church seems, there may yet be true believers there that we should not write off or pre-judge. After all, our job is not to pass judgment, but to call all to repentance and faith in Christ, the one whose fiery eyes see all our sin, and yet whose feet of bronze have walked through the fires to pay for that sin and free us from our bondage to it. Today's sermon explores Jesus' words to the church at Pergamum in Revelation 2. This church was located in the very heart of the pagan world. Though it was not without its sin and compromise, it was commended for standing strong in the face of persecution even as it was called to repentance for its errors. We have many of the same dangers today when we are tempted to befriend or incorporate secular culture in the church, changing our worship of God for the sake of 'engagement.' We continue our study through the book of Revelation by examining the message of Jesus to the second of the seven churches, the church at Smyrna. One of only two churches of the seven to receive commendation with no rebuke, this is a church undergoing hardship and persecution. Chapter 2 of the book of Revelation begins the messages of Christ to the 7 churches of the ancient world.
