The problem is not that we desire too much, but that we settle for too little. Deep within each of us is an innate desire for God, but most of us aren't able to tap into that desire because of so many smaller desires that keep our attention. Our desires need to be purified so that we can discover our thirst for the Lord, who thirsts even more for us.
