How do I prepare if marriage equality gets overturned?
In June 2022, we all watched in shock as the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and gutted women’s rights to their bodies and reproductive healthcare
Many of us in the LGBTQ+ community were even more shocked when the concurring opinion from Justice Thomas was released, where he alluded to the court’s need to review and reverse protections for same-sex couples, including marriage and the rights and responsibilities that go along with it.
In addition, with more and more Gen Z and younger Millenials vocalizing that they will be sitting out the 2024 election because of their disappointment with Biden on social issues, it is possible we could see even more momentum in the country to revoke the right for same-sex couples to marry.
It feels as if we’re at the precipice of going backward on this issue as we see countries like Nepal and Estonia legalizing marriage equality in 2023. So, what can same-sex couples in the United States do to protect themselves and their assets to be on the safe side?
You’re listening to Queer Money episode #472. And today, we’re sharing the top 5 documents same-sex couples can and should be using to protect themselves.

Ready to live fabulously (without blowing your entire paycheck on rent)? In this episode of Queer Money®, we’re spilling the tea on the most LGBTQ+-friendly — and affordable — city in the great state of Connecticut. 💁♂️
We’re putting Norwalk and Stamford head-to-head in a queer-friendly housing showdown. Norwalk takes the crown with a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index and a price tag that won’t give your savings account a panic attack. ✨
Stamford? Still cute, still inclusive — but honey, you’re paying a premium for that zip code.
And we’re not leaving Hartford out in the cold — it may not be top-tier (yet), but it’s got heart, affordability, and major potential.
We break down housing prices, income stats, and what it actually feels like to live queer in each city. Because finding a place to thrive shouldn’t require a trust fund or tolerating discrimination.
💅 Gayfabulous Takeaways:On this week’s episode of Queer Money®, we’re kicking off our Gay Retirement 101 series with a hard truth: Too many LGBTQ+ folks are being forced back into the closet as they age — and it’s not because they miss the wardrobe. 🏳️🌈
With anti-LGBTQ+ legislation gaining traction across the U.S., many older queer adults are facing discrimination, isolation, and even financial insecurity during a time that’s supposed to be their golden years. From unaffordable retirement housing to long-term care facilities that feel more 1950s than fabulous, the challenges are real — and urgent.
We’re breaking it all down:If you want to retire out loud, not fade back into silence, this episode is for you. Let’s make sure your next chapter is as bold, proud, and you as ever.ill present a selection of our preferred LGBTQ+ retirement communities nationwide, reflecting a spectrum of affordability and acceptance. Join us as we navigate this critical dialogue, equipping ourselves with the knowledge necessary to foster a secure and fulfilling retirement.
Topics Covered:Today, we’re sharing our favorite LGBTQ+ retirement communities 10 of our favorite places for LGBTQ+ individuals to live in retirement
In this episode of Queer Money®, we’re headed to the First State and shining the spotlight on Wilmington, Delaware—the most affordable LGBTQ-friendly city in the state and the proud owner of an HRC Equality Score of 80 (not too shabby, Wilmington 👏).
We spill the tea on what makes Wilmington worth the move—like Crimson Moon, the video bar/dance club hybrid that keeps the local queer scene glowing well past bedtime. 🌙💃
But wait, there’s more! We also peek into other Delaware cities (hi, Dover 👋) that might be lower on the equality score but still give your budget room to breathe.
Oh, and did you know Delaware has one of the highest LGBTQ+ population percentages in the country at around 7.5%? Small state, big queer energy!
So, if you're dreaming of a move that lets you live your truth and afford the occasional drag brunch, this episode is for you.
🎧 Listen in and let’s keep building fabulous lives—on our financial terms.
Takeaways:In this episode, we’re tossing out the crusty old budgeting rules that make you feel like a broke Puritan and serving up five fierce ways to build wealth that actually feel good. 💅
First up: Forget that budget that makes you cry into your cold brew. We’re all about the "no budget budget"—a sexy little system where you pay your musts first (like rent, debt, and saving for Future You), then guiltlessly spend the rest on what actually brings you joy (hello Beyoncé tickets and Trader Joe’s frozen croissants).
Tip two is all about putting your dollars where your happiness is. If your spending doesn’t make your life better, what are we even doing here? Say yes to intentional spending and a big gay no thanks to money guilt.
Then we get into the goods: a Roth IRA that moonlights as your tax-free emergency fund. She’s flexible, she’s smart, she’s basically your financial BFF with benefits.
We also break down why one income stream is soooo last season. It’s time to diversify, darling—side gigs, passive income, OnlyFans? (Kidding… unless?)—whatever helps you build that money stack.
Finally, we talk about finding your financial rhythm. Think of it like choreography for your bank account. Consistent, intentional moves that keep you dancing toward your goals—without the drama.
Bottom line: this episode is your glam guide to making smarter, happier money moves all year long. Your wallet deserves a glow-up—and so do you.
